If you haven’t thought about summer camp yet, now is the time! It’s so important for your kids to unplug, hike new trails, swim, canoe and make new friends around the campfire. These memories from camp will be some of the best of your children’s life.

How do you know if your child is ready? Every child and situation is different; there is no magic age.  Here are some signs that might help you decide.

1. Has my child asked about going to overnight camp? That is usually a very good sign that they feel ready.
2. Does my child make friends easily? Summer camp is a great way to make new friends and learn to meet different children.  Some children are ready to go on their own while others are more comfortable attending camp with a close friend. Invite a buddy to join you.
3. Can my child take care of their basic needs on their own? Bathing and washing your own hair is expected.  If you have a child who hasn’t learned this skill, encourage them to do so now at home so they are comfortable with the process.
4. Has my child spent the night without me? Some families choose the short camp session as a first-year trial and consider camp that is not too far from home.  Many camps like Camp El Tesoro offer first and second graders a 4-day camp session as well as one-week sessions for older campers coming to camp for the first time.

Camp El Tesoro is a favorite among many of our Tanglewood Moms members. I attended when I was growing up, and I often see it recommended in our Facebook group. They are so close to us in Fort Worth, it is a great way for your child to get the camp experience while still being reassured that they are not very far from home.

In honor of Doctor’s Day coming up on March 30th, the Tarrant County Medical Society Alliance is asking for anyone in the community to help recognize the best doctors in Fort Worth! The physician will receive a hand written note from us letting them know how much you appreciate them, and you will receive a yard sign to place in your yard.  The donation will go toward Project Access Tarrant County (PATC).

PATC was founded in 2011 by the Tarrant County Medical Society and is a procedure-based organization that provides specialty and surgical medical services to low-income, uninsured residents of Tarrant County. Our mission is to expand health care access and improve health outcomes for low-income, uninsured residents of Tarrant County, utilizing the charitable gifts of a network of existing voluntary providers and collaborative partnerships.

PATC is unique for two reasons. First, we do not offer any primary care needs. Tarrant County is fortunate to have over a dozen free/low-cost clinics that can serve primary care needs of our population; however, when a patient needs to see a specialist or needs to have surgery, the clinics usually don’t have those resources. Instead, they refer those patients to PATC. Second, no one in PATC is paid for services. One hundred percent of our doctors, hospitals, and ancillary services are volunteers who receive no reimbursement.

Our top five patient specialty needs are general surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, ENT, and gastroenterology. PATC does not offer services for chronic conditions, chemotherapy/cancer, dialysis, pregnancy, emergency medicine, psychiatric issues, substance abuse, or HIV/AIDS.

Since 2011, PATC has enrolled almost 1,700 patients and has coordinated 9,000 medical appointments, including over 500 surgeries. In addition to the medical appointments, PATC seeks to provide a full continuum of care including other services when necessary, such as translation, transportation, case management, primary care referrals, health screenings, dental/eye exams, and well-woman services. The vast majority of PATC patients are employed (or were employed until their medical condition occurred) and are supporting their families.

The average administrative cost of a PATC patient is $500 while the donated service per surgical patient averages $25,000. Because of the services PATC provides, patients are staying out of the emergency departments, are returning to work, and are able to continue taking care of their families.

Overall, PATC has coordinated $14 million in donated medical care for Tarrant County’s medically underserved.

Harry Potter is back at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History for the REEL Adventures: Harry Potter on October 6 beginning at 5:45. Dress in your favorite house robes, drop your name in the Goblet of Fire and enjoy Harry Potter themed activities followed by the film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in the Omni theater which begins promptly at 7:35.

Archie’s Gardenland is holding their annual Scarecrow Day on October 13^th from 10:00am-2:00pm. Get creative and bring an old shirt and pants and build your very own scarecrow to take home. They will provide the rest of the supplies, food trucks and fun. Only one scarecrow per family please!

FwFlavor is back! The Candyland-like, sweet new-fashioned ice cream social event will be at the Shops at Clearfork for a second time. On October 13 beginning at 5:00pm, the shops and restaurants that are participating will have frozen treats, activities for the whole family, light bites, drinks and cocktails. Get your tickets while they last!

Saturday October 13, 1:00pm-4:00pm, The Fort Worth Botanic Garden will be having a GROW Fall Festival. Explore the Backyard Veggie Garden, plant seeds, dissect pumpkins, paint pumpkins, enjoy the photo booth, story time and more.  This is a free event for everyone and no registration is required.

Saturday, October 13^th from 10:00am-1:00pm and Sunday October 14^th from 11:00am-2:00pm during the Junior League of Fort Worth’s Christmas in Cowtown Holiday Gift Market, there will be a Cookies and Cocoa with Santa. Children can visit the North Pole Event Area for cookies, cocoa, special activities and get their pictures taken with Santa.

Arts Goggle is coming Saturday October 20^th from 12:00pm-10:00pm. Head over Magnolia Ave. in the Near Southside Neighborhood and enjoy a free, family friendly event that brings live music, artistic displays of all kinds, food, drinks and fun.

October 27^th beginning at 11:00am, The Shops at Clearfork will be a hosting a special Halloween Cookie Decorating Class. The kids will decorate a dozen cookies and turn them into spooky and delicious treats to take home for the whole family to enjoy.

Wondering what to do with the family this Halloween? Simply go to the Fort Worth Historic Stockyards for Treat Street on October 31^st beginning at 6:00pm.  They will have candy galore, costume contests, complimentary hayrides, Halloween games and trick or treating for all.

A burst of fall color with pond reflections

Hopefully fall weather will arrive soon! It is the perfect time to participate in the Fort Worth Botanic Garden’s Family Exploration Saturdays. Every Saturday meet GROW Girl at the entrance of the Nature Trail at 9:30am. She will give a guided nature hike with hands-on activities afterward. The hike is about a half mile long and free for all ages!

On September 8^th, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra will perform Super Hero Soundtrack, Jr. Bring your little super heroes in costume if you choose and head out to Bass Hall to enjoy a pint-sized version of their Pops concert playing theme music of the most beloved superhero movies.

I’ll never forget the morning of September 11^th, 2001.  If you were impacted the same way and haven’t yet seen the amazing tribute at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, this is your opportunity to go. They have a huge piece of the World Trade Center Building One, column 133 from the floors 100 to 103 on permanent exhibition in the museum’s main entrance. My little ones don’t understand how incredible this is to see, but it is a great way for older children to connect and begin to understand the awful events that happened that day. Stop by, remember and honor those who lost their lives on this tragic day.

The National Cowgirl Hall of Fame has put together an amazing FREE event you do not want to miss. On September 15^th from 10am-2pm Neigh at the Museum will be so much fun for all ages! Any horse lovers are encouraged to bring a photo of their horse for display plus they will also have tons of fun entertainment, including the Haulin’ Nostalgia Photo Booth, Fort Worth Police Mounted Patrol, Dorothy the miniature burro and Ranch Party Events, Face painting, Music, Line Dancing with Billy Bob’s dance instructors, food, treats, prizes and more!

Oktoberfest is happening this month all over Fort Worth as well. On September 29^th the 1st Annual Parker County Oktoberfest 2018 will take place at the Parker County Brewing Company in Willow Park.  This Free family friendly event will be held from 6pm-11pm.

Fort Worth’s Oktoberfest at the Panther Island Pavilion begins September 27^th and ends on the 29^th. They will have 3 days of fun German festivities with authentic German food, music, dancing, games, and biergartens with a huge variety of Oktoberfest craft beers from around the world!

Saturday September 22^nd, the new Texas LIVE venue will host Oktoberfest LIVE! Arlington has a new event area and they went all out to do this right. Their Oktoberfest features German inspired beer and food plus live music from the Grammy Award winning polka band Brave Combo with special guest Das Ist Lustig. All ages are welcome and will be fun for all.

Finally, September 29^th is the first day of Fall Family Pumpkin Days at Mainstay Farms.  This adventure into the country will be one your little ones won’t forget! Jump on the in ground bounce blob, play in the hay bales and pick the perfect pumpkin! They have pedal races, train rides, zip lines, playgrounds and more. The Fall Pumpkin Days are Saturdays 10am-5:30pm and Sundays 12:30pm-5:30pm through November 4^th.

I know right now it doesn’t seem the weather will ever cool down, but it will.  I promise.  Get out and enjoy it! Have fun and stay safe everybody!

The Modern Art Museum is bringing back the increasingly popular ModernKids Summer Flicks on August 7^th and 8^th. Your children can enjoy some of the best animated shorts from the Children’s Film Festival Seattle 2018 and it is totally free.  Click the link to view times, titles and descriptions. Plus, if you haven’t been to the Takashi Murakami exhibit yet, this will be the perfect opportunity to enjoy it all!

One of my favorite go to spots for air-conditioned fun for kids is the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History.  Their Famapalooza series continues on August 11 from 6-8pm. Pawesome Animals is the theme and is a chance to meet live animals, explore preserved animal specimens from around the world and learn about dinosaurs from Texas. There will be crafts and hands-on activities too!

If you haven’t been to the Crayola Experience yet and don’t mind a 45 minute drive to Plano, this is a fantastic option to entertain the kids and beat the heat at the same time. Plan on being there for at least 3-4 hours as there is plenty to do for both boys and girls to enjoy!

If your kids love live music like mine, head to Sundance Square August 11^th and enjoy the evening as Professor D performs live. I always love a reason to be downtown and this is a great one!

Marvel Super Hero fans of all ages don’t want to miss Captain America, Iron Man, Spiderman and all of the favorites doing amazing stunts on August 16^th.  Marvel Universe LIVE! Age of Heroes is a show that will be performing at the Fort Worth Convention Center.   Your little superheroes will be in awe!

August 18 and 19, the International All Breed Dog Show will be in town at the Will Rogers Memorial Center.  Bring the whole family to see, watch and learn about all the different types of dogs around the world in a pleasantly cool, air-conditioned space.

If you are looking for a spot to cool down outside, Burger’s Lake is an all natural spring fed, one acre swimming hole. The water, fountains, swings and slides make a fun day for everyone.

Finally, for my last recommendation I saved the one and only hot, outside, no air conditioning event and I included it because it is really the coolest! Every third Sunday of the month, you can bike to brunch!  August 19^th at 8:30 am depart from Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop and bike to a well-earned brunch at Righteous Foods and then bike back.  Total mileage is approximately 15 miles. There is no requirement to make it all the way there the first try. See how far you can go and each time get closer to the prize. You can do it!

Monkey and Dog Books is once again hosting the Great Fort Worth Where’s Waldo Scavenger Hunt! Stop by the bookstore starting on Monday, July 2nd, and pick up your passport. Follow the directions on the passport that will lead you in your journey to find Waldo. He’s hiding in locally-owned businesses all over town! There will be an End of the Hunt Party on July 31st at their new location.  Waldo hunters get a sneak peak before the official grand opening on August 1!

July 2^nd, 3^rd and 4^th The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is celebrating American Independence with an Old Fashioned Family Fireworks Picnic. Bring the whole family for the annual Concerts in the Garden celebration!

Fort Worth’s Fourth at Panther Island Pavilion is another amazing fireworks show! On July 4^th beginning at 2pm, head down the Panther Island for live music, flyboard shows, the F-16 flyover, kid zone activities and more. A great way to spend the 4^th of July!

Celebrate the Fourth of July in a big way – the Cowboy Way!  Spend your holiday weekend in the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards for a Red, White and Boots celebration, perfect for the whole family.  Activities throughout the day will include Live Music, Longhorn Cattle Drives, Legends of Texas Gunfights, Face Painting, Food Trucks, a Beer Garden, and Farmers Market. Grab a quick bite at Riscky’ s BBQ or Trail Boss Burgers and check out all of the western shops Stockyards Station has to explore. Hop on a historical walking tour, go horseback riding along the Trinity River with Stockyards Stables, or get lost in the recently renovated Cowtown Cattlepen Maze to round out your fourth! The Texas Rangers will be taking on the Houston Astros on the 4^th. Enjoy a baseball game with your crew and a patriotic fireworks show following the game.

On July 12^th beginning at 6pm, Amon Carter Museum of American Art helps you through the Dog Days of Summer by having a night of fun.  Pack a picnic and bring the whole family including the dogs for an outdoor showing of Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey on the museum’s lawn. Other fun activities include print a paw print, western photo shoots and more. Righteous Foods will provide cocktails and food plus more.  Be sure the dogs are on a leash and only service animals are permitted inside the museum building. Coolers, blankets and lawn chairs are welcome and the movie begins at 8pm.

Every Friday afternoon this July, Fun on the Run Paintball Park is hosting Friday Night Paintball Games. Everyone in the family, ages 8 and up can participate from 4-8pm and no reservation is required.

From July 20-22, Infinity Festival will be taking place at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Explore the latest advancements in virtual realty and other interactive technologies. All ages will enjoy demonstrations of the latest innovations, creating 3D scans of artifacts from the Museum’s collection and discover how the Museum is working to create the experience of the future, here now.

Saddle up for National Day of the American Cowboy on Saturday, July 28th starting at 10 am hosted in the Stockyards National Historic District. Named the “Best Cowboy Tribute” event in the nation by Western lifestyle magazine, American Cowboy, you can expect to see activities like cow milking, quick draw, a rib eating contest, a worn boot and mustache contest and so much more! All events happen along East Exchange Avenue on the lawns of the Cowtown Coliseum & Livestock Exchange Building, inside Stockyards Station, and participating surrounding businesses like the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and Billy Bobs. This weekend is fwFLAVOR‘s new-fashioned ice cream social at FWBlackhouse! It promises to be a great opportunity to meet up with other Fort Worth families face to face. On Saturday, June 2nd, beginning at 1 pm there will be ice cream, popsicles, snow cones, activities, live music, and more. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children (2 and under are free!), and there is a VIP option: for $25, you can come at noon – first in line for ice cream, hair-painting, and more! Mamma Mia! is being performed at Casa Mañana June 2nd to 10th. The music of ABBA is sung to tell the feel good story about love, laughter, and friendship. This show is suitable for most audiences and loved by over 60 million people worldwide. I’m so thankful we have the opportunity to see it here in Fort Worth. Tickets are still available.

Sunday, June 3rd is the Kimbell Art Museum Family Festival. Beginning at 12:00pm, there will be hands-on activities, story times, games, and lively performances by guest artists. This is a free family event, and no reservation is necessary. You will not be disappointed!

June 9th is Dairy Day at Nash Farm. Bring the family from 10 am to 12 pm and enjoy learning about the dairy process including milking, butter making, cheese making, and more. Tickets are $3.00 and can be purchased here!

Monday, June 11th, Central Market and Bass Hall are hosting a Pie-Baking Contest in celebration of the upcoming Broadway at the Bass run of Waitress later this month. Everyone is welcome to enter and there will be a team of pie-loving judges including our very own mayor, Betsy Price! It must be made from scratch and follow specific rules to win. On June 14th, go on a trail ride from Waterside to Westbend with Bike to the Bend. Meet at the REI store in Waterside from 5:30 to 6:15 pm. At 6:15 pm sharp, hit the Trinity Trail to Westbend where you can grab some drinks and snacks from HG Sply Co and Bartaco. Beginning around 7:45 pm, head back to Waterside for a cold beer from Rahr & Sons Brewing Company and post-ride treats. Sounds like an adventure not to miss! Did you know that the Botanical Research Institute of Texas at the Botanical Gardens has Family Exploration Saturdays? Every Saturday in June, anytime between 1 pm and 4 pm, bring the family to the backyard vegetable garden at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens for outdoor exploration that will teach your children about some amazing things found in nature!

Finally, Concerts in the Garden is here. Beginning June 1st and continuing throughout the summer, our Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the Botanical Gardens. There are a variety of music genres on the calendar and something that will please everyone. Those of you who have lived in Fort Worth for a while know that Mayfest is the most fun family friendly festival in town! It is so large that you can come back day after day for more! From May 3rd through 6th, there will be three dedicated music stages playing live music of every genre, the Tom Thumb/Albertsons Children’s Area with more than 20 free activities geared toward children ages 3 to 12, the Midway, the giant human maze, and the zip line. This is always so much fun, and the money that is raised goes to enhancing our Trinity River and surrounding parks and community.

The Clearfork Spring Market is happening on Saturday, May 12th beginning at 8am. The family-friendly outdoor event will have merchants, artisans, free family activities, and yard games to enjoy in addition to your favorite farmers market vendors you can usually find there.

On Saturday, May 12th, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden is hosting Mother’s Day High Tea from 2 to 4 pm. Treat your mom, wife, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, or friend with a selection of teas, finger sandwiches, pastries, and sweets. Live harp music and beautiful views of the historic rose garden will be an afternoon she’ll never forget. Reserve your tickets, as seating is limited.

Beauty and the Beast is still showing at Casa Manana until May 13th. Get tickets soon because you don’t want to miss it!

Beginning May 26th the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History presents Grossology. Explore the slimy side of humans and animals through fun interactive and oozy exhibits. Bring the whole family and learn something new in a fun way!

Finally, it’s time for the Fort Worth Invitational at the Colonial. The PGA tour returns May 21st through 27th. Grab a spot on the green of your favorite hole or follow your favorite player through the course. It’s a great way to introduce young ones to golf while enjoying the sport yourself.

April 6 Pinstripes is having their Grand Opening Celebration. This is your chance to go see the new bowling/bocce ball and bistro destination located in Clearfork. They will have complimentary beer and wine, hors d’oeuvres, bowling, bocce, and live music.

April 4 to 8 Disney on Ice is back at the American Airlines Center with their new show called Dare to Dream.

April 14 The whole family can help support a fabulous cause at the Victory Over Violence walk/run at the Trinity Park Duck Pond. They will also have a kid’s zone filled with activities for the little ones and a food/beverage area to get snacks, as well!

April 14 Do you have kids that like to get muddy? The upcoming Kids Obstacle Challenge will provide a chance for just that and more. They will have a course for all kids ages 5 to 16 with lots of mud! It’s a family adventure, and if parents choose, they can run with their kids for free!

April 20 to May 13 Casa Manana presents Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. They will also be hosting Tea with Belle! This is a chance to experience a tea party complete with tea, treats and a meet & greet with Belle. Characters from the show will wait on the guests. Tickets for the show and tea must be purchased separately and everyone must have a ticket to attend.

April 20 Support the Gladney Center for Adoption by attending Gladney Night at Six Flags over Texas from 5-10pm.

April 22 Amon Carter Museum of American Art is hosting An Afternoon with Texas Ballet Theater at 2pm. Watch a performance, tour the new exhibition A New American Sculpture, and learn a few ballet moves from the dances, too!

Finally, Goat Yoga is back in the Historical Stockyards. If you missed your chance last year, you are in luck. Bring the kids at 5:30 to meet the goats before the fun begins. They will also have live music, lawn games, a beer garden, food trucks and prize giveaways!

I’m going to start with Monkey and Dog Books because I’m proud of my fellow Fort Worthians Michelle Marlow and Lisa Lewis, MD. They are both authors of books you might be interested in. Michelle Marlow has written a children’s book called S is the Most Delicious Sound. It is a children’s book to help children with speech disorders.  Lisa Lewis is a local pediatrician who has written a book called Feed the Baby Hummus: Pediatrician-Backed Secrets from Cultures around the World. They will both be holding book signings at Monkey and Dog Books! Michelle will be there Saturday March 3^rd beginning at 11am and you can find Lisa, March 2^nd from 6-7pm.  This is a great opportunity to meet the local authors, discover their books, and get some answers to questions you may have in these areas.

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra presents Disney Fantasia: Live in Concert March 9-11 at Bass Hall.

March 9^th the Fort Worth Botanic Garden brings you Bats in the Garden at 6:30pm.  During the 60-minute bat encounter you will discover the benefits of bats in your backyard, learn the history of bats and learn about bat conservation.

March 11^th at the Log Cabin Village you can see demonstrations of polymer clay sculpting. No reservation is required, just stop by to meet the artist and bring lots of questions.

For those of you staying in town for Spring Break, be sure to checkout my previous Tanglewood Moms blogs for Spring Break staycation ideas. They can be found here and here. I also have a few suggestions to add this year. First, The Kimbell Art Museum is having a Spring Break Art Extravaganza.  This includes ongoing art activities, interactive family tours, storybook readings, teen studios led by guest artists and children’s films.  There is no charge and no registration required to attend.  March 13, 14, 15^th anytime between 10am-3pm and on the 16^th from 12pm-4pm. Additionally, The Modern Art Museum will hold Spring Break Wonders March 12-15^th. Each session is lead by an artist and a docent. They will led a tour and guide work on a project focused on selected works in the Modern’s collection and the current special exhibition, New Works by Ron Mueck. This program is free as well.

If you would like to get away but not go too far, Lush Resort on Possum Kingdom Lake is beautiful and they will be heating the pool!

Celebrate March 17^th from 12-8pm in the Fort Worth Stockyards! Cowtown goes Green is the city’s largest family-friendly St. Patrick’s Day celebration.  There will be face painting, cow camp, live music, gunfights, a Western/Irish themed Cowtown goes Green Parade that follows the 4pm cattle drive and more.  All free of charge.

My Princess Moment is here March 16^th and 17^th. Your children will be able to mingle with the princesses in the ballroom, have a tea party and photo shoot. Upgraded tickets include princess hairstyles, make-up and VIP early access with the princesses.

Guitar: The Instrument that Rocked the World is on exhibit at The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History through May 6^th. The Omni Theater is showing Rolling Stones at the Max, Tornado Alley and Flight of the Butterflies.

March 20^th from 6-7:30pm Camp Carter is hosting Family Craft Night. Grab some dinner and bring the kids to create an Easter themed craft for free. There will also be an opportunity to create a ceramic project as well with prices starting at $5.

Madagascar, A musical adventure is performing at Casa Manana beginning March 23.

Broadway at the Bass brings Finding Neverland to Bass Hall March 20-25^th.

Meet the Easter Bunny at Hulen Mall beginning March 1^st and March 31^st from 12-4pm come experience Easter, Texas style at Fort Worth’s Texas-Sized Easter Egg Hunt in the Stockyards! The free Easter egg hunt for children between the ages of 0-12 begins at noon, be sure to get there early or you might miss it!
