In 2019, members of the Jordan Elizabeth Harris Foundation (JEHF) and their supporters rode from Oregon to Washington D.C. to Light the Trail. The ride reverse-followed the trail of the Lewis and Clark expedition, and each mile of the ride was dedicated to someone who died by suicide. The second Light the Trail ride followed the Mississippi River from the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico in 2022. And now, Light the Trail comes home to North Texas.

The first Texas-based Light the Trail bike ride — a 20- or 40-mile ride along the scenic boundaries of Benbrook Lake, through back country roads and back to the lake — is April 11, 2026, starting at 8am. The ride supports The Jordan Elizabeth Harris Foundation. The Jordan Elizabeth Harris Foundation’s mission is to prevent suicide, eliminate stigma, and provide hope to people struggling with depression. Jordan, the oldest of three children, took her life March 27, 2012. The foundation offers programs to workplaces, schools, and communities of faith to prevent suicide. Her parents, Tom and Ellen, are co-Chairs of The JEHF.

“Your commitment to ride with us will support those individuals and families that wrestle with mental health challenges every day,” said Andy Deufel, chairman of the race committee. “We ‘Light the Trail’ to help bring people out of the darkness of depression and into the light of hope.”

The ride is open to race enthusiasts, leisure riders, and those interested in supporting the foundation. Whether you’re in for a steady cruise or a longer challenge, every mile you ride helps make a meaningful impact. To register, visit www.Lightthetrailride.org. Registration is $250 per person. Enter promo code MOMSRIDE2026 for 50% off registration. The ride includes well-stocked rest stops along the way and a post-ride lunch at the finish line.

“Ben was more than a mentor to me—he was family. His artistry, his generosity, and his vision shaped not only my own journey as a dancer and leader, but also the very heart of Texas Ballet Theater. I will miss his wisdom, his humor, and his boundless passion for storytelling through dance. While my heart is heavy with grief, I am profoundly grateful for the decades of inspiration and love he shared with me and with this company. His spirit will live on in every performance, every dancer, and every audience moved by his work,” said Tim O’Keefe, Artistic Director of Texas Ballet Theater.

Born on April 4, 1936, in Portsmouth, England, Stevenson trained at London’s Arts Educational School and was awarded the prestigious Adeline Genee Gold Medal, the highest honor from the Royal Academy of Dancing. By 18, he joined Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet (now The Royal Ballet), working with Sir Frederick Ashton, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, and John Cranko. Later, at Sir Anton Dolin’s invitation, he became a principal dancer with London Festival Ballet, performing leading roles across the classics.

Stevenson’s arrival in the United States in 1968 began an indelible chapter in American ballet. He led Harkness Youth Dancers in New York and co-directed National Ballet in Washington, D.C., choreographing works for the inaugural season of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

In 1976, Stevenson became Artistic Director of Houston Ballet. Over 27 years, he transformed it from a small provincial troupe into one of the world’s leading companies, founding Houston Ballet Academy and training generations of dancers including Lauren Anderson, Janie Parker, Carlos Acosta, and Li Cunxin. His promotion of Anderson to principal dancer—the first Black dancer to receive the title at Houston Ballet—in 1990 was a landmark moment in American ballet.

Internationally, Stevenson forged lasting ties with China, beginning with a cultural exchange in 1978. At the Beijing Dance Academy, he was named Honorary Faculty Member—the only foreigner to receive such distinction there and at the Shenyang Conservatory of Music. In 2018, China recognized him as one of the most influential Foreign Experts in 40 years of Reform and Opening Up. He later led Houston Ballet’s historic 1995 tour of China, with opening night televised to more than 500 million viewers.

In 2003, Stevenson became Artistic Director of Texas Ballet Theater (TBT), ushering in tremendous growth in repertoire, education programs, and international talent. His acclaimed productions—including “Swan Lake”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “Cinderella”, “Dracula”, and the beloved parody “The Nutty Nutcracker”—were legendary for their storytelling, wit, and theatrical flair. In 2022, Stevenson was named Artistic Director Laureate in honor of his tenure as TBT’s longest serving artistic director and role in elevating the company as an internationally recognized ensemble.

For his lifetime of achievement, Stevenson was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999. He also received three gold medals at the International Ballet Competition (1972, 1982, 1986), the Dance Magazine Award in 2000, and the Texas Medal of Arts in 2005.

Beyond the stage, Stevenson’s generosity and love of community shone brightest at his kitchen table, where he nourished both body and soul while spinning enthralling stories for friends, dancers, and colleagues alike.

Stevenson is survived by extended family in Portsmouth, England, and a host of friends and dancers worldwide who will never forget him.
Second Thursdays is a FREE monthly event at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (the Carter) where visitors can connect with art through cocktails, conversations, and creativity in the heart of Fort Worth’s Cultural District. Just like the art on the Carter’s walls, these events are always changing, so each visit offers something new. This season, enjoy exclusive artist talks, live music, specialty cocktails, art making, and more.

A deviously delicious sci-fi smash hit musical, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS has devoured the hearts of theatregoers for over thirty years, and is currently running off-Broadway. The meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” – after his coworker crush. This foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it blood. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out-of-this-world origins and intent towards global domination!

Based on the Disney animated film, Frozen tells the story of two sisters and the real meaning of true love. When Princess Elsa is crowned Queen of Arendelle, the magical powers she’s tried to hide burst forth, cursing the land into a forever winter. As Elsa flees into the mountains, her sister Anna sets off on a journey to find her and bring her home. Along the way, she gains the help of ice harvester Kristoff, his reindeer Sven, and a happy-go-lucky snowman named Olaf. Full of magic, humor, and a beautiful musical score, Frozen is a powerful tale of sisterhood and acceptance.

As spring break and summer vacation approach, Cook Children’s Health Care System is launching a safety series to provide caregivers with essential advice on road trips, poison prevention, and water safety. As pediatric health care experts, the Cook Children’s team knows that protecting a child’s health is about more than treating illness it’s about preventing emergency room visits due to avoidable injuries.

Drowning is the leading cause of injury, with children between the ages 1 to 4 at the highest risk. According to the 2024 Community Health Needs Assessment, Cook Children’s Medical Centers in Fort Worth and Prosper treated 224 drowning-related injuries from 2021 to 2023. These incidents occurred in bathtubs, open water (lakes, rivers, and ponds), and pools or hot tubs.

“Spring break is really our kind of entry point of getting back into the water,” said Jillian Mitchell, program coordinator for the injury prevention team at the Center for Community Health.

Cook Children’s Loaner Life Jacket Station provide five different sizes of U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets, ranging from infant to adult, that can be borrowed and returned. The goal is to make sure no child or adult drowns at a public lake because they didn’t have access to a life jacket. In 2025 more than 1,800 U.S. Coast Guard life jackets to area lakes in Tarrant, Denton, Rockwall, and Stephens counties.

Mitchell encourages families and caregivers to make a plan before heading to the water. The “Lifeguard Your Child” program teaches parents how to create a safety plan for children anytime they are around water.

According to data from the Community Health Needs Assessment, 85% of drowning-related injuries were pool-or hot tub-related. Of those 8% were fatal, with most fatalities occurring with children ages 0 to 4.

While many public and community pools are not yet open, families may travel to lakes, rivers, or oceans.

“Open water behaves differently than in a pool,” explained Mitchell, “It’s dark. It’s deep, it’s murky. Anyone that is on a lake or a river or in the ocean should wear a life jacket all the time because it is an unpredictable water source.”

Mitchell shares these tips for families heading to the water for their spring break:

Learn about the flag system when you go out to the beach.

Sit near a lifeguard if there is one present.

Look for a life jacket that’s approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Spring break is a great time to pull out those life jackets from last year. You may find that your child has outgrown the life jacket.

Make sure that your children know they should always ask permission before going to the water.
