Motivated college students from across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex can apply for the inaugural council online through September 18, 2025.

The Carter College Council offers students the chance to share ideas, gain real-world museum and event-planning experience, build their networks, and play an active role in welcoming the next generation of museum visitors. Open to undergraduate and graduate students from any major, the initiative is designed to reflect student voices while providing professional development opportunities.

“At the Carter, we know that the most meaningful connections with art happen when we connect directly with our community,” said Amanda Blake, Director of Education, Library, and Visitor Experience. “The Carter College Council gives us the chance to collaborate with college students from across the metroplex to create experiences that reflect their voices and backgrounds. This initiative strengthens our ongoing work to partner with our community in authentic ways, and I am excited to see how these students will help us make the Carter an even more welcoming and inspiring place.”

As members of the Carter College Council, students will gain hands-on experience by meeting with Museum staff to learn how engaging events are developed, brainstorming and designing the upcoming College Night at the Carter, collaborating with peers from across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and helping promote the event to build excitement among fellow students. The inaugural council will begin work this fall to plan the College Nigh on February 19, 2026.

“I’m so excited to be able to work directly with college students throughout the metroplex to plan a night specifically for them at the Carter,” said Madeleine Fitzgerald, Manager of Adult Programming. “It will be a special experience to meet with students who are interested in creating a fun and meaningful experience at a local art museum. I hope it will also be a unique opportunity for them to be able to get to know others with similar interests from other schools.”

The Kimbell Art Museum announced today that it will display Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes as a Guest of Honor on loan from the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica in Rome, where it normally hangs in the Palazzo Barberini. The monumental canvas ranks among Caravaggio’s most groundbreaking masterpieces for its bold realism and the theatrical staging of its biblical subject. The painting will be on view in the Louis I. Kahn Building from September 14, 2025, through January 11, 2026.

“The Kimbell’s audiences are fortunate to be able to experience this fall and into the new year one of Caravaggio’s most dramatic and famous paintings,” said Eric M. Lee, director of the Kimbell Art Museum. “A star of the recent, historic Caravaggio exhibition in Rome that attracted more than 450,000 visitors, Judith Beheading Holofernes joins the Kimbell’s own beloved painting by Caravaggio, The Cardsharps. These two works, along with our recent acquisitions of a moving Mary Magdalene by Artemisia Gentileschi and a striking still life by the artist known as the Pensionante del Saraceni, will offer a rare perspective on the revolution in art initiated by Caravaggio and his followers.”

Approximately six feet wide and five feet tall (195 x 145 cm), Judith Beheading Holofernes narrates a passage from the Book of Judith in the Old Testament Apocrypha. The protagonist is a beautiful young widow from a Jewish town that is under attack by the Assyrian army, led by the general Holofernes. She dresses in finery and visits the enemy camp with her maid under the pretense of helping Holofernes defeat the Israelites. After a banquet, the general falls into a drunken stupor, and Judith courageously decapitates him with his own sword, liberating her people.

Popular in art and literature since the Middle Ages, the story of Judith and Holofernes affirmed the triumph of virtue over vice, tyranny, or heresy. While most artists show Judith after the grisly deed, victoriously holding Holofernes’s severed head, Caravaggio depicts her at the critical moment, delivering the blow that will end the general’s life. Spotlit inside the tent, the actors appear to be shockingly within our reach. Resolute, Judith prays silently, as divine light courses through her arms to empower her heroic feat. She grips Holofernes’s hair as blood streams from his severed neck onto the white linen. His muscular body still roiling, Holofernes screams as he passes from life to death. Transfixed by this spectacle, Judith’s maid opens her sack to hide their trophy when they steal away from the camp.

Michelangelo Merisi was born in the town of Caravaggio in the north of Italy in 1571. Moving to Rome around 1595, the painter—who became known as Caravaggio—soon won the attention of the papal city’s elite and his fellow artists. Painted directly from live models with strong contrasts of light, his dramatic and innovative pictures—like the Kimbell’s iconic The Cardsharps (c. 1596–97)—were widely imitated. The Barberini painting’s first owner, the wealthy banker Ottavio Costa, treasured the masterpiece so highly that he covered it with a silk curtain and stipulated in his will that it should not be sold or removed from his family’s collection.

The exhibition of Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes follows the Kimbell’s Focus Exhibition SLAY in 2022, which displayed both Italian Baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi’s and American contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley’s Judith and Holofernes paintings in dialogue.

Eric Lee added, “The stunning loan of Caravaggio’s Judith Beheading Holofernes from the Palazzo Barberini concurrent with the special exhibition Myth and Marble: Ancient Roman Sculpture from the Torlonia Collection makes for an exciting Roman season at the Kimbell.”

Judith Beheading Holofernes goes on view at the same time as the landmark special exhibition Myth and Marble: Ancient Roman Sculpture from the Torlonia Collection. Fifty-eight masterpieces from the world’s most important private collection of ancient Roman sculptures, which before 2021 were unseen by the public for more than seventy years, are making their first-ever transatlantic voyage. Impressive figures of gods and goddesses, vivid portraits of emperors and their families, and masterfully carved funerary monuments highlight the artistic achievements of Rome’s High Imperial Period in the first to second centuries AD. Nearly half of the sculptures have been newly cleaned, conserved, and studied specifically for this once-in-a-lifetime exhibition.

The Kimbell periodically welcomes the long-term loan of works from fellow museums and private collections, displayed in the permanent collection galleries. These Guests of Honor are intended to complement the museum’s existing holdings, present the work of the Kimbell’s conservation program, and provide special opportunities for museum visitors. Other current Guests of Honor include Girolamo Romanino’s Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine (1540) and Anthony van Dyck’s Queen Henrietta Maria (1638), both on loan from the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art; and Thomas Couture’s The Duel After the Masked Ball (c. 1857), Lawrence Alma-Tadema’s Between Hope and Fear (1876), Claude Monet’s Sunset at Lavacourt (1880), Gustave Caillebotte’s Still Life with Oysters (1881), and Paul Gauguin’s Still Life with Ceramic Dish (1888), all from private collections.

Promotional support for the Kimbell Art Museum and its exhibitions is provided by American Airlines, the Fort Worth Report, and NBC 5. Additional support is provided by Arts Fort Worth and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

The post Kimbell to Present Caravaggio Gem first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art announced on August 25, 2025, that Dr. Andrew J. Walker will be stepping down as Executive Director of the Museum following 14 years of leadership.

Under his tenure, the Carter’s collections and endowment have expanded significantly, and the Museum’s internal galleries have been renovated and reimagined to improve visitor experience and to emphasize a thematic presentation that connects artists and works through time. He also expanded the Carter’s exhibition program to include site-specific installations by living American artists, and enhanced access to the Carter’s collection onsite and online, all of which have resulted in significant growth in community engagement and impact.

Walker’s last day at the Museum will be August 31, 2025. Scott Wilcox, the Museum’s Chief Operating Officer, has been named interim Executive Director. The Board will be launching a search for the Carter’s next Executive Director in the coming weeks.

“I have been honored to lead the Carter for the past fourteen years and watch it evolve into the impactful institution it is today,” said Andrew J. Walker. “I am exceptionally proud of all that we have accomplished, whether through our commitment to new scholarship on American art, our exceptional exhibition program, or our continued expansion of the Carter’s collection to include new voices and seminal works that tell the story of American creativity. A particular highlight for me has been our expanded engagement with the communities we serve, and the relationships we have built with our partners and supporters,” said Walker. “Given all that we have accomplished together, it feels like the right moment for me to depart and allow a new leader to take the helm as the Carter plans for its future.”

During Walker’s tenure, the Carter has continued to acquire important works of art by acclaimed American artists, with noted acquisitions of artwork by Ruth Asawa, George Bellows, Dawoud Bey, Mary Cassatt, Gabriel Dawe, Richard Hunt, Norman Lewis, Glenn Ligon, and John Singer Sargent, among many others. Walker also spearheaded the Museum’s collecting initiative dedicated to amplifying Indigenous artists’ contributions to American visual identity through the history of photography, which saw the addition of artwork by more than ten Indigenous photographers including Tom Jones, Shelley Niro, Cara Romero, Sarah Sense, and Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie.

“Andrew Walker became director of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art before my mother Ruth Carter Stevenson passed away,” said Karen Hixon, President of the Board of Trustees. “Andrew came to understand her passion and vision and continued to ably lead the Museum through the transition years and beyond. We are grateful for all he has done to set the Carter on such a strong path for its future. I so appreciate his leadership, good counsel, and friendship over the last many years and wish him well in in this the next chapter of his life.”

In 2019, Walker stewarded the Carter through a major renovation that expanded and updated exhibition spaces to create wider galleries and better sightlines, while dedicating 7,000 square feet for special exhibitions. During this time, the Carter also unveiled a new website, dramatically increasing public access to the collection and the wealth of stories about American art that it possesses. The renovation also included an expansion of the Carter’s photography vaults with the latest advancements in climate control cold storage, allowing for the future growth of the collection and the continued preservation of the Museum’s holdings. Established at the same time thanks to generous gifts, the Gentling Study Center provides resources and support for ongoing scholarship on Scott and Stuart Gentling as well as other under-researched American artists.

Since Walker joined the Museum in 2011, the Carter expanded its exhibition program to include site-specific installations by living American artists, presentations of work by underrepresented artists, and organized major exhibitions that have toured the nation. Highlights include American Epics: Thomas Hart Benton and Hollywood (2015); Color: American Photography Transformed (2013); Emancipation: The Unfinished Project of Liberation (2023); Leonardo Drew: Number 235T (2023); Mythmakers: The Art of Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington (2020); The Perilous Texas Adventures of Mark Dion (2020); Navigating the West (2015): George Caleb Bingham and the River (2014); Speaking with Light: Contemporary Indigenous Photography (2022); Stephanie Syjuco: Double Vision (2022); Wild Spaces, Open Seasons: Hunting and Fishing in American Art (2017); and The World Outside: Louise Nevelson at Midcentury (2023).

As Executive Director, Walker was an active champion of the Museum’s community engagement and outreach initiatives, impacting the audiences the Carter serves both at the Museum and across North Texas. In 2018, Walker supported the launch of the Museum’s Carter Community Artists initiative dedicated to supporting and working with local artists, providing the public with access to collaborate and learn from artists working in the community. The Museum has also established a robust network of community partners to enhance engagement with visitors at the Carter and beyond the Museum walls.

The post Carter Executive Director to Leave After 14 Years first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

Organized by the National Portrait Gallery, London, this exhibition brings together nearly 50 works made throughout the artist’s career. The exhibition is broadly chronological in scope and traces the development of Saville’s practice from the 1990s to today. The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is proud to be the only U.S. venue for this important exhibition.

“We are honored that the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth will be the exclusive U.S. venue for Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting, giving our community and visitors to Fort Worth a remarkable opportunity to experience and learn from the breadth of this celebrated artist’s work. We enthusiastically invite everyone to join us for this stunning exhibition and engaging programs that draw connections in dialogue with the Modern’s Collection.”

Halona Norton-Westbrook, Ph.D.
Director of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

Highlighting key artworks, from monumental oil paintings to smaller-scale charcoal drawings, the exhibited works reveal the inventiveness of Saville’s practice. Curated by Sarah Howgate, Senior Curator of Contemporary Collections at the National Portrait Gallery, London, with consultation by Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth Chief Curator Andrea Karnes, this survey was created in close collaboration with the artist to explore her deep passion for the painting process, including drawing as a cornerstone.

Rising to prominence in the 1990s, Saville has played a leading role in reinvigorating figurative painting. Her works reveal a deep awareness of art history and the ways in which the body has been represented over time and across cultures. While inspired by great artists, like Michelangelo and Rembrandt, and influenced by modern masters like Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, Saville is also intrigued by the work of abstract artists, including Willem de Kooning and Cy Twombly.

Saville’s early figurative representations were captivating in their depictions of heads and bodies. The exhibition reunites some of the paintings the artist created while still at the Glasgow School of Art, including ground-breaking works that launched her into the spotlight. The bold and intense aesthetic of these early paintings prefigures Saville’s later work and her ongoing interest in flesh and anatomy.

In addition to Saville’s painted forms, Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting includes a number of drawings that are intimate and almost sculptural in appearance. Using charcoal, pastel, and pencil, the medium of drawing has remained important to Saville’s practice, providing an important outlet for experimentation.

Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting concludes with the artist’s most recent series of new “portraits,“ which illustrate the evolution in her presentations of flesh. While her distinct style is maintained, these works fall between the figurative and the abstract. Rendered in saturated tones, for Saville, these paintings make connections between the physical and virtual in our contemporary age.

“It has been a profound honor to work closely with Jenny Saville, Sarah Howgate, and the National Portrait Gallery, London. Saville’s paintings are rich with emotion and physicality—raw and poetic in equal measure. They push the boundaries of figurative painting and offer a powerful meditation on the human condition. We are privileged to present this exhibition in Fort Worth, with the addition of eleven major U.S. loans.”

“Jenny Saville is one of the most important artists working today. This exhibition charts an exciting journey, from the early monumental paintings I remember well from her Young British Artists III exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in 1994, to her recent ‘portraits’ for the 21st century. Walking a tightrope between figuration and abstraction, the exhibition celebrates and delights in the nature of paint itself. It has been a privilege to work closely with Jenny Saville on The Anatomy of Painting.”

Jenny Saville was born in 1970 in Cambridge, England. She received her B.A. Honors Fine Art from Glasgow School of Art, Scotland before being represented by Gagosian in 1997.

Saville is known for her depictions of the human form, which transcend the boundaries of both classical figuration and modern abstraction. Saville has been credited with originating a new and challenging method of depicting the figure in her work by imbuing her monumental paintings with a sculptural yet elusive dimensionality that verges on the abstract.

Saville’s works are featured in several public collections, including the Tate, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Broad, Los Angeles; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Morgan Library & Museum, New York; Seattle Art Museum, Seattle; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and The Long Museum, Shanghai. In 2007, Saville was elected a Royal Academician, Royal Academy of Arts, London.

The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive publication of the same name, which includes texts from Emanuele Coccia, Dr Nicholas Cullinan, John Elderfield, Roxane Gay, and Andrea Karnes, as well as a conversation between Saville and the exhibition’s curator, Sarah Howgate. The catalogue is available at the Modern Shop and online at www.shop.themodern.org.

This fall, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (the Carter) is offering a variety of free monthly events designed for kids of all ages that spark creativity and make American art accessible for even the youngest scholars. Monthly favorites such as Itty-Bitty Art (up to 24 months), Toddler Studio (2–3 years), and Carter Playdate (3–5 years) invite children up to age 5 to explore the Museum and engage with art in fun, age-appropriate ways, while Family Workshops provide collaborative and interactive art-making experiences for ages 6 to 12. (Please note that while these events are free, reservations are encouraged.)

The Carter also offers a variety of resources for families to make the most out of their visit to the Museum this fall. Art Discovery Guides are available onsite at the Information Desk and online to help navigate the Carter’s collection.
Austin Uzor’s newest body of work marks a formal step forward for him while still exploring the intersection of dreams, memory, and imagination. Somewhere between abstract painting and naive carpentry, this new work allows the viewer to look and touch, translating material choices into shared experiences.

Born in the eastern part of Nigeria in the year 1991, Austin Uzor hails from Imo state. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2013 from the University of Nigeria Nsukka where he majored in drawing and painting. Shortly after graduation, he kickstarted a studio practice which led to local and international recognition that set the groundwork for his first solo show in 2016 titled “Visitors” at the Rele gallery in Lagos, Nigeria. He moved to the US in 2016 and received his Master’s degree in Drawing and Painting at the University of North Texas in 2021. Since then, Uzor has exhibited locally and internationally with works in private collections throughout Europe, Africa, and the United States.
