Steeped in tradition while embodying today’s cowboy and cowgirl lifestyle vibe, the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR) is the city’s capstone event for Western fun and entertainment. FWSSR rodeo performances are scheduled in Dickies Arena January 16 through February 7.

Returning is the FWSSR PRORODEO Tournament (Jan. 23 – Feb. 7), and the $1.5 million purse which ranks it among the nation’s top five rodeos sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.

The technicians are the best in the business; they have years of experience with almost every type of system and product on the market.

“We put our guys through the wringer to make sure that they’re up to our standard of professionalism before we send them to your house,” Alan Garcia, president and owner of Fort Worth Lawn Sprinkler Co., said. Every technician is knowledgeable, courteous, and ready to make sure your system not only works but works efficiently, saving you water and money.

The company knows that to keep the best technicians, they have to treat their employees like family. And they do. Did you know Fort Worth Lawn Sprinkler Co. has never laid off an employee? It’s true! Alan modeled and 3D-printed a new type of waterer for flower pots. “For flowerpots, we had two options,” Alan said. “We had micro sprinkler heads that sprayed water everywhere, or we could use drip tubing that could clog and that was difficult to remove and reinstall when changing plants. Now we have these 3D-printed heads that lay flat to the soil that don’t spray everywhere and are easy to move when you need to change plants.”

And while sprinkler technology keeps evolving, Alan wants you to know that the company only uses products proven to last. “We try to build a system that will be as close to maintenance-free as possible.” 

While other sprinkler companies may focus on big irrigation projects, for Fort Worth Lawn Sprinkler Co., no job is too big and no job is too small. When I moved into a new house, the sprinkler system didn’t work. The previous owners had not left any information about the system, so I called Fort Worth Lawn Sprinkler Co. It turns out one solenoid had failed. The technician happily replaced it, and I used the system without problems until I moved again. 

Remember what I said at the beginning? That this is the time to make sure your system is working smoothly? Alan agrees. “There’s not a better time to make sure that your system is up to date. Don’t wait until early June. Don’t wait until you have a brown spot on your lawn that might not go away until it cools down in October or November. Beat the spring rush.”

Fifty years is a long time for a service company to be in business. It’s even longer to keep a reputation for quality service, but Fort Worth Sprinkler Co. has managed to do just that.

Unlike any event in Fort Worth, the festival exclusively focuses on highlighting the work of local artists, musicians, and performers of all media and experience levels. ArtsGoggle attracts a crowd of 60,000+ patrons that are as diverse as the event’s Near Southside neighborhood. ArtsGoggle started over two decades ago as the Near Southside’s own indoor gallery night. Whether it is a sleepaway camp or a day camp close to home, summer camp can be an important part of a child’s physical and mental development. A few years ago, the American Camp Association did a study on the value of summer camp. The study showed marked growth in campers’ independence, self-confidence, and self-assuredness. Ninety-three percent of campers reported that camp allowed them to become friends with people who are from different backgrounds. Seventy-four percent of campers reported that they did things that they were afraid to do at first. Seventy percent of parents reported that their child gained self-confidence at camp.

Camp can expand a child’s horizons in ways that school, with its heavy emphasis on test results, cannot. Whether it’s doing a ballet intensive, building a robot, learning a new sport, or putting on a play, camp allows children to focus on something they love or learn something entirely new.

Perhaps most importantly, camp allows children to just be children. Yes, there are expectations placed on them at camp. They have to learn to work with strangers and resolve minor conflicts that may arise. They have to learn that their every want will not be accommodated. But without the pressure of grades and the expectations of family, teachers, and peer groups, campers are free to simply live and soak up every adventure and learning opportunity. Simply put, they can stop being students and simply enjoy being kids.

Black Gold, Brutus, McCree, and Blacksmith bring unique traits, striking appearances, and remarkable stories to continue the Herd’s tradition of celebrating Fort Worth’s rich history.

Black Gold

Born in 2018 and hailing from Greenleaf, Kansas, Black Gold stands out with his rare black color pattern. With an impressive horn span of 100.5 inches, his massive, twisty horns embody the grandeur of Texas Longhorns. Donated by Lazy J Longhorns and Joe Sedlacek, Black Gold earned his name as a nod to striking oil in Texas, making him as special as his namesake.

Brutus

Brutus is a commanding presence in the Herd, with his striking red-and-white spotted coat and stout build. He was born in 2019 in Sunset, TX where he won multiple championship titles. Known for his size, Brutus is the largest steer in the Herd and was donated by Karlye Williams.

McCree

McCree, a young steer also donated by Karlye Williams, joins the Herd at just 2 years old. He has an elegant red coat and subtle white speckles and brings a calming presence to the Herd. McCree has a distinctive set of horns that are straight only with a span of 57.5 inches. His addition highlights the diversity of the Herd’s extraordinary steers.

Blacksmith

Blacksmith is a local steer hailing from Southlake and was donated by Chris Hesse. He has a sleek black-and-white pattern that makes him a true standout among the Herd. He wears a ‘25’ brand and joined the Herd during the 25th Anniversary making Blacksmith the perfect addition to the team.

These new steers join the Fort Worth Herd’s esteemed group of Longhorns, representing a living piece of Texas history. The Herd continues to captivate visitors with its twice-daily cattle drives at 11:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. in the Fort Worth Stockyards. Each addition enhances the Herd’s mission of educating and inspiring visitors about the legacy of the Chisholm Trail and the role of cattle drives in shaping Texas’ identity.

“These four new steers bring such unique characteristics and charm to the Herd,” said Kristin Jaworski, Trail Boss of the Fort Worth Herd. “We are thrilled to share their stories and introduce them to our visitors. They truly represent the heart of Fort Worth.”
