The start of a new year is the perfect time to switch things up. Change your style. Add a little (or a lot of) pizzazz. Megan Clifton understands. The founder and designer of Gather Goods creates jewelry meant to dazzle, incorporating found materials with her love of ageless style and her love of making a statement, inherited from both grandmothers. Megan generously shared her story with Madeworthy.

Madeworthy: When did you first realize that creating jewelry was more than a hobby – that it was a calling?

Megan Cifton: It was right before Christmas about eight years ago, and friends were asking me for necklaces to give as gifts to family members and friends. I put about 50 necklaces out on my dining room table and sold every single one.

MW: Was there a personal moment or a season of your life that influenced the launch of Gather Goods?

MC: My grandmother lived in Albuquerque most of her life, and when she died, I received some of her beautiful Native American pieces. I loved the turquoise and vibrant colors, but wanted [to create] a modern take on them.

MW: Tell us about a piece you’ve made that tells a particularly powerful story.

MC: This summer, after the horrible flooding in Central Texas, we made a green and white bird necklace. We donated 100% of the sales to the Kerr County Relief Fund. We sold out in the first five minutes and were able to give them more than $10,000.

MW: How do you balance staying true to your creative vision while also growing a business?

MC: HA! Great question! This can be tricky because I always loved creating one-of-a-kind pieces. As I grew, I knew I needed a new model that could grow with the business. I started working with a silversmith in Albuquerque who started making one-of-a-kind pendants, but in larger quantities, which has been a game-changer. I also love working with multiple African bead dealers who have grown with me!

MW: Have you had moments of doubt, and if so, what kept you grounded during them?

MC: Absolutely. I think every creative and every business owner goes through periods of doubt. (If not, let me know your secrets.) I think what keeps me grounded and inspired is my oh-so-loyal customers. They are always pushing me to do better, create more, and keep things fresh.

MW: What has surprised you the most since starting Gather Goods?

MC: The people! The people I get to work with, the people who support me, the hustle of other small business owners who do this day in and day out.

MW: What legacy do you hope Gather Goods will leave behind?

MC: That’s another tough question, as we’re not dead yet, and we have no plans of going anywhere anytime soon! I hope people feel like no matter what, we always treat them with kindness. I hope people find our customer service to be the cream of the crop. And I hope our necklaces leave a tiny bit of brightness to their day.

MW: In moments of burnout, what do you turn to for inspiration?

MC: Travel and time away. Sometimes it takes just a vacation or a few days out of the office to feel inspired again. We just had a very epic trip to Africa with my family of four, where I got to go to the source of most of my beads. It left me in awe of the craft and excited for what’s to come. I know trips to Africa aren’t always at our fingertips, so from a local perspective, I find going on a walk or run can completely reset my brain. Burnout be damned, I’m ready for 2026!

MW: What advice would you give to someone looking to create but is afraid to start?

MC: Just do it. Seriously. You won’t get everything right the first time, and you will learn as you go, and that’s just fine. The juice is well worth the squeeze.

But we also love a good staycation, and Fort Worth is one of the best cities for amazing staycations. Why not start your Cowtown staycation at the Fort Worth Zoo? [Editor’s Note: As usual, this was edited for space in the magazine, so we’ve run it in its entirety here.]

Madeworthy: The Fort Worth Zoo is one of the jewels in Fort Worth’s crown, constantly rated as one of the U.S.’s top zoos. Can you give us a brief historical overview of the Zoo?

Fort Worth Zoo: So the story goes… a traveling animal menagerie was coming through town, and city officials were so delighted by the animals that they decided to purchase them right then and there. Thus, the Fort Worth Zoo opened its doors in 1909. We were owned and operated by the City of Fort Worth, but the Fort Worth Zoological Association (FWZA) was formed in 1939 to raise additional funds for the Zoo. By the 1980s, the Zoo faced decreasing support and funding from the City, and FWZA was essentially defunct.

Around that time, Ramona Seeligson Bass had visited the Zoo and was determined to improve it. She’s been the visionary and driving force behind the transformation of the Zoo, taking it from a declining municipal zoo to an international powerhouse in conservation, animal care, and education. Under her leadership, the Zoo has raised $330 million, opened dozens of permanent habitats, and welcomed 35 million visitors and counting.

Courtesy of the Fort Worth Zoo

MW: “A Wilder Vision” was announced in 2016. As of publishing, three of the four planned habitats are complete. Can you give us a sneak peek into the last habitat, “Forests & Jungles of the World”?

FWZ: The final stage of A Wilder Vision will transform the middle section of the Zoo! No longer will you walk down a straight path to Texas Wild!; instead, this habitat will have guests winding through tree-lined trails surrounded by animals from the world’s lushest forests and jungles. Zoo visitors can prepare to see a few Fort Worth Zoo regulars, like the orangutan and bongo, as well as a few new faces like okapi and red pandas!

MW: Conservation is, along with education, one of the primary missions of the Zoo. Can you give us an overview of the Zoo’s conservation successes?

FWZ: The Fort Worth Zoo’s impact on saving species stretches beyond our 64-acre park. We’re involved in conservation projects in nearly 30 countries around the world – from funding anti-poaching and education efforts in Africa and Asia for rhinos and elephants to studying and banding wild flamingos in South America to breeding and releasing Texas native reptiles and amphibians right here in our own backyard. On your next visit to the Zoo, stop by the recently renovated Mountains & Desert building in Texas Wild!. Here, you can learn more about our Texas-specific projects impacting animals like the monarch butterfly, Texas kangaroo rat, Houston toad, and the iconic Texas horned lizard!

Courtesy of the Fort Worth Zoo

MW: Generations of Fort Worth’s children have become animal lovers and fans of the Zoo through Zoo Camp. What does 2025’s Zoo Camp have in store for the kids?

FWZ: Core memories are made at Summer Zoo Camp, no doubt! Each week of camp is filled with immersive experiences and animal encounters for children ages 4 to 17, from giraffe feeding and Zoo hikes to classroom animal visitors and craft time. Our middle school- and high school-aged campers can plan on behind-the-scenes access to areas like our animal hospital and nutrition kitchen to learn more about running a zoo and caring for nearly 7,000 animals!

At its heart, Summer Zoo Camp is about connecting children with nature, playing and exploring outside, making new friends, and just letting kids be kids!

MW: The Zoo has a preschool! I wish this were available to my (now almost-grown) kiddos! Please tell us about Zoo Preschool.

FWZ: During Fort Worth Zoo Preschool, children experience an activity-packed, three-hour class with unique and interactive animal activities. Not only will students learn about animals and conservation, but they will develop social, language, artistic, and cognitive skills through an age-appropriate curriculum.

For children ages 4 and 5, we have a nature-based, extended-day program called Nature’s Navigators that runs twice a week. This class is a great next step for children who have already participated in a year of Zoo Preschool. We’re enrolling for the 2025-26 school year for both Zoo Preschool and Nature’s Navigators!

MW: Zoo membership definitely has its privileges. Tell us what members enjoy, other than unlimited admission and free parking.

FWZ: Becoming a Zoo member is one of the best deals in town, and with parking perks, it pays for itself in just three visits! In addition to free admission and parking, Zoo members can expect in-park discounts on food and merchandise, discounts and early registration access to our Zoo education programs, special members-only events at the Zoo, as well as discounts on admission to 100+ zoos and aquariums around the U.S.!

What I love most about Zoo membership is that you don’t have to feel pressured when you visit the Zoo to walk throughout the entire park – you can come for an hour or two and call on your favorite animals and still be home for nap time or conversely, run over after school for an hour or so, just to spend time outdoors and connect with nature!

MW: Boo at the Zoo is the high point in a lot of Fort Worth kids’ lives. Can you give us a little bit of Boo at the Zoo history?

FWZ: Boo at the Zoo has grown to be an annual family-favorite event for more than three decades now! We consistently hear from people who remember coming to Boo as a child, and now they’re bringing their own children and creating new family memories. As a kid, you might remember coming to Boo in the evening, as there were several years in the 90s when the event was held after dark. Wanting to ensure that the entire family can participate and see animals in the daylight, Boo at the Zoo ultimately shifted to a three-day daytime event packed with festive entertainment, including not-so-spooky stage shows, crafts, fall-themed enrichment for the animals and trick-or-treating through the park.

If you haven’t yet visited during Boo at the Zoo, I encourage you to make plans for 2025! It’s a great way to kick off the fall season and spend a day with family and friends.

MW: A birthday at the Zoo is a birthday to remember forever. Please tell us what your children will experience at a Zoo birthday, whether a day party or (even cooler!) a Zoo overnight.

FWZ: The Zoo is the perfect setting for a birthday party where kids can go wild! All party packages include a three-hour room rental, but we encourage you to spend most of your time exploring the Zoo and visiting your favorite animals! Party packages can be customizable to include animal visitors, a Birthday Buddies animal adoption, and Zoo Bucks to redeem in the park at various attractions and gift shops.

During the warmer months, hosting a party at our splash pad, Safari Splash, is also an option!

MW: If you have any news about the Zoo that you want to share, we’d love to publish it!

FWZ: On your next visit, be sure to say hi to some of our youngest inhabitants – we’ve got fluffy flamingo chicks, two juvenile elephants – Bowie and Travis, four giraffe calves, a playful mandrill sibling pair, and Moja, our juvenile lion that is growing fast and furious!

The Museum of Living Art (MOLA) is a world-renowned herpetarium, home to some of the world’s rarest reptiles and amphibians. Something cool about this building is that you are exploring just about one-third of this space. The areas behind the scenes are dedicated to the breeding and conservation of several cold-blooded species. Be sure to stop by the Discovery Hub to chat with a zookeeper and meet one of our scaly or slithering animals up close. It’s the perfect place to learn more about and develop an appreciation for the often-overlooked creatures in the animal kingdom.

Lastly, our gharial habitat is just outside of MOLA. We’re one of only a handful of zoos in the United States to care for this species and the only zoo to have successfully bred multiple offspring of this critically endangered species! We are so lucky to have them here in Fort Worth for our community to discover!

The post Made in Fort Worth: The Fort Worth Zoo first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

Whether giving new playwrights a stage during SparkFest or letting comedians work on new material in their popular standup comic residencies, Amphibian Stage helps us view the world through fresh eyes. Madeworthy talked with Jay Duffer, Amphibian’s Artistic Director. [Editor’s note: This article was edited for space in the magazine, but Jay’s answers are so good that we wanted to run the whole thing on our website.]

Madeworthy: Congratulations on the 25th season! Tell us a little about how Amphibian Stage came to be.

Jay Duffer: Amphibian Stage was founded in 2000 by three TCU graduates. Kathleen Culebro, the Founding Artistic Director, and her producing partners, Carman Lacivita and Jonathan Fielding, envisioned a theatre company providing bold and innovative work to the DFW metroplex and adding another option to the theatre landscape in Fort Worth for theatergoers. The fledgling company used spaces donated by TCU in the early years before moving to the Fort Worth Arts Center. In 2012, the company was among the first businesses to plant its roots in the now vibrant South Main Street in Fort Worth’s near Southside. Since its founding, the theatre company has garnered high praise and recognition locally and beyond.

MW: What was the first production at Amphibian Stage?

JD: I believe it was Landford Wilson’s Burn This.

Jay Duffer and Elizabeth Kensek

MW: Last year, founding director Kathleen Culebro stepped down, leaving you as the sole artistic director, and Elizabeth Kensek joined as managing director. Will these changes affect what playgoers have come to know and love about Amphibian?

JD: In short, no. I believe the mission and vision of the organization are solid, and its unique trajectory has been set since its inception. Creativity, innovation, and engagement are at the core of what we do. We still have a deep committment to new works as well as presenting plays that are lesser known/have not had productions in the DFW area. When asked what separates us from all the other theatres, I usually respond, “The work we do, you will not find anywhere else in North Texas.” This is not always the case, but we will continue to intentionally seek out those excellent stories and storytellers needing a home for a supportive, creative process. Our programming will continue to inspire and challenge and hopefully impact how we view the world around us.

MW: Amphibian Stage has always championed new playwrights without relying on a stable of “safe” productions. To be blunt, how is that possible?

JD: Great question! And I have a lot to say in response. Several things attribute, I think. There is a spirit of adventure in our theatergoers. If you attend an Amphibian Stage production, you are coming knowing that the work “gets into trouble”. Good trouble. That is to say, the work not only entertains but also takes smart risks. It’s not predictable. The work surprises, delights, and challenges. I also feel like those who donate, be it individual donors, foundations, or grants, invest in our mission of supporting such unique work. We know there is a natural draw to those stories that have huge commercial success, for example, Steel Magnolias or A Christmas Carol, but that’s not our vibe. There’s nothing wrong with such commercial successes. These works are done everywhere and should be. We simply present the alternative. Amazingly, we have the support and resources to take such risks. We offer, if you will, other culinary delights to the meat and potatoes diet. By the way, this has perplexed me throughout my whole career from the consumer/patron’s point of view. People flock to see the newest concert and will pay big time to sit on that front row, or they will be first in line to catch that new movie, but when it comes to theatre, the tried and true and familiar seems to take precedence in purchasing habits. So getting people to come see new work – and be excited about it – is a necessary challenge for us. We wear the badge proudly, and we take on the challenge basically one patron at a time. If we can get them here, they always love it and come back for more.

SparkFest: “Barren”

MW: What is SparkFest? Could you give us a sneak peek at SparkFest 2025?

JD: SparkFest is an annual festival centered around the simple idea that a spark of creativity can lead to immeasurable results. It is a 10-12 day festival developing new works from emerging and established playwrights from across the country, there is a high-stakes acting competition with awards in the thousands (ala The Cliburn), moving story-telling, lively and entertaining music events, comedy shows, exhibits, parties, etc. Every year, the festival uplifts and celebrates a specific community within the wide swath of the American people. Last year, we celebrated the AAPI Community, and this year, we are thrilled to celebrate the Native and Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island (North America) and the Hawaiian Islands. The festival brings in more than 65 artists from around the country every year and is packed with highly entertaining events that our patrons and community have come to expect. This year’s dates are June 13-22. It feels like a 10-day party. Oh, and we offer our popular wine slushies only during this festival. Come get out of the summer heat and enjoy the Spark!

MW: A lot of us only know standup comedians via their specials on various streaming services. Your standup residencies offer both upcoming and established comedians an audience as they work out new jokes and routines. Can you tell me a little more about these evenings?

JD: Yes, we are not a comedy club. Let’s make that distinction clear. The comic residency aligns with our core mission of supporting and developing new work. There was no standard for developing new comedy other than the comedian going from club to club and working the material out on their own. We offer a place for that development to happen over the course of two to three nights. I know nothing like this offered anywhere else in the country. Our North Texas audiences love being a part of that process. They know they are hearing jokes for the first time, and some comedians even stop to get audience feedback. Every comedian is different, so each experience is unique. Our audiences are supportive and highly entertained. So far, we have had the pleasure of hosting 2 Saturday Night Live cast members, Sasheer Zamata and Melissa Villasenor, in addition to Phoebe Robinson (she has visited twice to sold-out performances), Baron Vaughan, River Butcher, Aparna Nancherla, Chris Laker and 2024 brought in Cat Cohen to rave reviews and packed houses.

MW: I know our readers (many of whom are parents of high school students) would love to know more about your summer intern program.

JD: We often offer internships to high schoolers. We have created concentrated experiences for high schoolers to get hands-on training in sound, lighting, set building, producing, community outreach, etc. Information about these opportunities can be found on our website on the community outreach page. Internships can also be in the fall or spring, not just the summer. This year’s internship involves working with the producing team on SparkFest 25. The submission process has closed on that opportunity. However, we do have another opportunity that will be posted for a possible Sound Intern/Apprentice coming up in the fall. I encourage parents to keep checking the website for updates. Because we are a small organization, each experience is different and can be tailored to the student’s needs. Encouraging the young artist in training is a privilege for us and is paramount as we pass the torch of craft and knowledge to the next generation. It is an investment in the student, and should they stay in Fort Worth, it is an investment in future designers/actors/theatre makers ready to share their talents with our community.

MW: National Theatre Live offers viewers access to the productions of Britain’s National Theatre. How did Amphibian become Fort Worth’s way to view NT Live productions?

JD: I’m so sorry. I don’t know it’s genesis. And I should! So, I’m guessing here. I know Kathleen wanted to bring even more options to our Phib audiences. The National Theatre in London is a gem among the global theatre community. We have an incredibly generous donor (who wishes to remain anonymous) who supports the program. The Modern is an amazing partner in this endeavor, and we are presenting the screenings. The many various productions are simply awe-inspiring. So, it was a natural fit in the theatre’s progression. It also gives us the opportunity for exposure to The Modern members and those who visit the museum. You don’t need to purchase a flight to hop across the pond. You can see high-quality productions for some of the lowest discounts we offer. Wins all around for us and for our patrons.

“Rooted”

MW: “Rift, or White Lies” will be about to premiere when this issue goes to press. Can you tell us about the rest of the 25th season?

JD: It’s stellar! As Artistic Director, I want to say that I’m particularly proud of this year’s selection of shows. “Rift” is a gripping masterpiece of writing: taut, compelling, and complex. I’m certain the play has a long and successful future ahead of it. And I think our patrons will say, “We saw Rift at Amphibian Stage BEFORE it went to…greater and bigger places.” We have cast two incredible actors (plus an amazing understudy) and are bringing in our A-team of designers and director for this one. The best thing to know about this show is that the actors will alternate roles every performance. So, you can see it twice and see an entirely different interpretation of the character. “The Heart Sellers” moved me tremendously when I first read it. It is funny and heartwarming, but what checks the box for Amphibian Stage is that it is uniquely focused on the budding relationship between these two strangers who find incredible solace as they experience great loneliness after immigrating to the U.S. “The Birds” is a most interesting moral fable, if you will. Yes, there are some good Halloween chills and thrills, and the tension in the script is palpable, but what McPherson has beautifully and sometimes poetically penned is more terrifying than Hitchcock’s film, in my opinion, because the true sense of horror in this story is not the inexplicable attack of the birds on humankind; but the capability of seemingly decent humans to choose evil over good.

MW: What does the future hold for Amphibian Stage?

JD: I hope to continue the dream that Kathleen began 25 years ago. This means we remain committed to bringing the highest quality, innovative, and engaging live theatre to Fort Worth. It also means that Amphibian Stage remains relevant and engaged, not just in our own community but also in the national theatre scene. Yes, some programming might adjust or evolve. I am excited about some community programs in the early stages of development (hopefully, we will have more to share about these opportunities later this year or early 2026). But, overall, I do not wish to reinvent the wheel here. If anything, I’m doubling down. I remain committed to bringing our audiences experiences that will inspire them over and over again. I love our little corner of the world at the intersection of S. Main and Vickery. From here, the truly amazing staff (I’m so honored to work with these dedicated and talented individuals) and I can impact our immediate community by providing them with art and experiences that are as necessary to their well-being as a deep invigorating break, that deeply satisfy their desire for creative interactions and that can cause profound tremors in the soul. We can entertain, yes, but we also can create a transformative experience for our patrons. That is a north star worthy for the journey ahead. And, if we are doing our jobs right and well, it has a ripple effect beyond just Fort Worth.

The post Made in Fort Worth: Amphibian Stage first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

Who among us has yet to find themselves wanting a complete style makeover? Unless you spend a fortune or you buy fast fashion that is cheap but not environmentally friendly and is usually ethically dubious, a style makeover is difficult to achieve. Until Sunday Supper. Owner and designer Kate Mefford has created delightfully original collars that instantly change any outfit. Madeworthy talked with Kate about her unique style, antiques, and accessories.

Madeworthy: What was the motivation for creating Sunday Supper?

Kate Mefford: I was always obsessed with history, folklore, human behavior, and decoration, so I originally set out to help people style their homes in a unique way. Along the journey, I kept being drawn back to fashion, which is my passion. Using things I sourced for home design to produce wearable pieces sparked an energy, and people responded favorably.

MW: Tell us about your tagline, “Storied Style, Slow Fashion, Handmade”.

KM: Looking at the textiles we use, you get a sense of our brand values. They’re all vintage pieces I’ve sourced, and they hold so many stories. Each collar is made by hand; like most quality items, they take time. Our slogan, “No Cold Shoulders,” is a double entendre that refers to the coziness the collars provide and the inclusive and encouraging ethos of the brand. I’ve never met a stranger, and I will compliment you in the grocery store!

MW: Why collars? Why now? We remember the lace ones from the ‘80s, but how do you make them look chic for today’s woman?

KM: A collar is a cozier version of a necklace. They can be quite architectural and show-stopping and simultaneously calming. With Americana and Western wear so hot, I’m excited to bring a fresh take on neck accessories. Our one-of-a-kind collars are still about layered adornment like their predecessors but are sustainably made, more thoughtful, and have soul with a bit of an edge and some swagger.

MW: What is the Sunday Supper woman’s lifestyle? What does “Southwestern Ranch + East Coast Jet Set style” mean to you?

KM: The Sunday Supper woman knows how to host a charity ball but doesn’t hesitate to roll up her sleeves and stock a food bank, clean a horse stall, or schlep her own bags. She lives for the rodeo, live music, and margaritas with her crew. Sunday Supper is ultimately the marriage of my parents’ vibes. My dad is the quintessential Texan, and my mom is a very preppy East Coast queen. Aesthetically, the Sunday Supper woman loves a classic wardrobe but leans into interesting accessories to showcase her personality. She blends feminine and masculine style elements into something completely her own.

MW: What did you learn as a TCU fashion major that you still use?

KM: My favorite TCU fashion class was Costume History. I’ll always remember learning about collars and their importance in many cultures. I didn’t know back then that they would be such a big part of my life! I also loved my Textiles and Entrepreneurship classes, and studying abroad in Paris and Lyon made a big impact on me.

MW: Round Top! Tell a rookie Round Topper what to expect.

KM: Round Top is its own universe; the rest of the world stops when you are there. If you go in with an open mind, prepare to leave completely recharged, creatively inspired, and with more friends than you brought! Don’t try to do it all unless you are a psychopath like me. But if you want to, I recommend breaking it up into chunks.

MW: Tell us about your travel and buying trips to find vintage and antique home decor to make someone’s home fabulous.

KM: No matter where I go, I’m always sourcing! My mom and grandmother lived this way, and I learned from the best. Though I love sourcing from typical vacation spots like Nantucket, Santa Fe, and Charleston, one of my favorite things is shop the antique malls in tiny Texas towns.

MW: Will you ever venture into clothing design?

There is no greater joy than making someone else feel fabulous. While part of me would love to do a whole line of garments, I want Sunday Supper to be accessible to any woman of any shape. Every girl deserves to put on a piece that frames her beautiful face, makes her feel fabulous, keeps her calm and cozy, and sets her apart from the crowd. One-size-fits-most is the route I’m currently taking because it feels right and good.

The post Made in Fort Worth: Sunday Supper first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

Madeworthy: You are the Assistant Vice President of Innovation Ecosystems at HSC Next. First, what is HSC Next? And what is an innovation ecosystem?

Cameron Cushman: Great question! HSC Next is the innovation arm of the University of North Texas Health Science Center. We advance solutions for a healthier community by guiding innovators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and others in the community to success.

Just like in biology, an ecosystem exists around the many parts… that are required to bring new innovations to market. This collaborative work… helps improve our world by enhancing the environments, cultures, and mindsets to increase the chances of success for game-changing innovation to thrive.

MW: And what does the Assistant Vice President of Innovation Ecosystems do?

CC: I consider myself an “innovation evangelist.” There is so much cool stuff happening in Fort Worth, and most of the people in our city have no awareness of it. The problems our neighbors are trying to solve through creative new products, services, and solutions are truly remarkable, and I work every day to increase that awareness and improve their chances of success.

MW: How does your podcast “Innovate Fort Worth” tie into your job at HSC Next?

CC: Bringing an innovation to market… is extremely difficult. We believe that with a broad group of people and resources working to help these innovators, we can increase their chances of success… Our podcast tells their stories at the earliest stages of their development before they get press in other publications.

MW: How and why did you become interested in entrepreneurialism?

CC: It started during my time in Washington… I saw the role that innovation… played in economic growth and job creation. I saw that policymakers didn’t understand this and that no one was advocating for these drivers of wealth creation that were solving some of the toughest problems in our society. And I was hooked.

MW: Why do you think Fort Worth has become an entrepreneurial incubator?

CC: Fort Worth has a long history of innovation going back to our founding. We’ve created the ice cream drumstick and hydraulic fracturing and [are home to] influential companies like Radio Shack, Mucinex, and Alcon. Fort Worth’s tremendous growth over the last few decades has brought new talent and capital that have contributed in important ways. Fort Worth has a diverse population in a large metro area that is ripe for testing ideas and taking products to market successfully.

MW: You’ve been involved in the Fort Worth entrepreneur scene for a long time. How has that landscape changed?

CC: We’ve improved the understanding of the value that innovators and entrepreneurs bring to our economy. They are job creators, wealth builders, and problem solvers. Helping entrepreneurs is, at its core, economic development.

MW: What positives and negatives do you see for Fort Worth entrepreneurs?

CC: A positive is our tremendous growth and our robust universities. A negative is our lack of early-stage capital that can help get these promising ideas and research off the ground.

MW: Are there particular types of startups that seem to do better here?

CC: Everyone knows that Fort Worth is a good place to build companies in the real estate and oil and gas industries, but we also have an emerging concentration of biotech companies. In a five-year span starting in 2017, we had five biotech startup companies sell to established companies for millions of dollars…

MW: Where do you see Fort Worth entrepreneurship heading, short-term and long-term?

CC: Fort Worth is ripe for a tremendous explosion of entrepreneurial activity… as a part of the larger Texas-wide economic expansion. In the long term, I think you will see a tremendous number of new startup companies that are going to raise significant capital and make a huge impact on society.

In the short term, we have to find more ways to connect budding entrepreneurs to the capital they need to grow… Our ability to shift investment dollars from extracting resources from the ground to investing in what’s new and next will have a significant impact on our future.

MW: What are some of the promising innovations or ventures that you can talk about?

CC: One of our top researchers at HSC is working to release one of the world’s first blood tests for Alzheimer’s Disease. That could be on the market later this year and will be a game changer…

MW: Fort Worth has expanded rapidly in the last decade. Do you see that trend continuing?

CC: Absolutely. Austin is full. Dallas is too fancy, and Houston is, well, Houston. Economically speaking, Texas is hot. Fort Worth is hot. We’ve got lots of land to build and all the ingredients to make this the epicenter of a new entrepreneurial renaissance in the state.

MW: Is now a good time for entrepreneurs to consider entering the market with a new product, service, or software?

CC: Yes! It is cheaper and easier to start a company now than ever. If interest rates continue to decline this year, borrowing and investing will get less expensive, increasing the probability of success.

MW: How does HSC Next help Fort Worth entrepreneurs achieve their goals?

CC: Our team runs a variety of programs that can help entrepreneurs, particularly those in biotech, along their journeys. We are closely tied to Tech Fort Worth, the oldest startup incubator in the city. We run a program that helps funnel federal research dollars directly to startup companies. We also host about a dozen companies in our labs on campus… And we run lots of events to connect and educate entrepreneurs and innovators.

MW: If someone has an innovation they are working on, how do they get on your radar?

CC: Call. Email. Send me a DM. Carrier pigeon. Whatever! We want to hear about what you are working on. And we can connect you to resources for free that can save entrepreneurs lots of time, capital, and heartache. Start at HSCNext.com and go from there.

MW: What is 1 Million Cups (1MC)? How did it start and and how is it going?

CC: 1 Million Cups is a weekly educational program for entrepreneurs that started in Kansas City at the Kaufman Foundation about 10 years ago. It’s now in 100+ communities around the country. It’s a simple, friendly way for startup companies to inform their community about what they are working on and provides them a platform to get feedback from others about their business or idea. It’s based on the idea that if we can drink one million cups of coffee with our local entrepreneurs, then we can fundamentally change the trajectory of entrepreneurial-led economic development in our city.

The Fort Worth chapter of 1MCC died after COVID, but we are planning to bring it back soon. Stay tuned!

MW: What are the requirements and process for someone to get involved with 1MC?

CC: We’re looking for people with ideas and early-stage businesses who want to share what they are working on with others in the community and are seeking feedback on a problem they are facing or want to know how to maximize their chances for success. This is not for multi-level marketing folks, bankers, or franchise owners, but for those who are staring down their path as entrepreneurs. Everyone in the community is welcome to listen and pitch in. I’ve been involved in 1MC for a decade and always learn something new!

MW: Tell us about Global Entrepreneurship Week. Did you get this started in Fort Worth?

CC: Yes… The goal is to shine a light on all the great things happening in our entrepreneurial community for a full week. It is a great way for anyone to engage… It has now expanded all over North Texas. Mark your calendars for November 18-24, 2024!

And now it’s time for the Lightning Round! What are your Fort Worth favorites?

Madeworthy: Tell us all about Lawson Brown. When did you dream this up?

Carolyn Osborn: It’s a dream I’ve always had. This is just the latest iteration. Dreams evolve and grow with you. Before Lawson Brown, I owned a brick-and-mortar with my sister-in-law called Lola + Lina. We carried items that were hard to find in the area, at various price points, and were appropriate for all occasions and ages. This didn’t feel like work to me because I loved it SO much. During the pandemic, I welcomed my second child and realized that I didn’t have the bandwidth needed to sustain Lola + Lina, so I decided to close the store, but I didn’t sell it because I had faith in my dream and knew I’d want to return to it. In 2023, I felt the call again! Lawson Brown, named for my two daughters’ middle names, launched online in December 2023.

MW: What items do you specialize in?

CO: Jewelry, clothing, and other accessories. You’ll find several of the same designers I carried previously at Lola + Lina, alongside a handful of new designers I love and know my clients will love, too!

MW: Tell us about your customer – who is she, and where is she going?

CO: No matter her age or where she’s going, she’s having fun! She practices the art of self-expression and moves confidently through the world. The beautiful thing about Lawson Brown is that you can find something for your little one, a high schooler, or a gift for a friend. You can find earrings to wear on your big day, casual clothing, or something for a night out on the town! We love versatile pieces and strive for inclusivity in our offerings.

MW: How do we shop with you? Is it web-only, or do you have pop-ups or participate in shows?

CC: We’re web-only right now! You can find us at shoplawsonbrown.com. If you are local to Fort Worth, use promo code Dropoff, and your order will be dropped off/picked up the same day, free of charge.

MW: What are three essential items we must have in 2024?

CC: Statement earrings are timeless in my mind, so I’d recommend something loud and proud with a pop of color! Our Rainbow Pop Heart crystal earrings add a wow factor to every look. On the everyday wear side of things, I’m loving our Hoop Pave Earrings and Pearl Baby Giselle studs to add a touch of understated glamour to everything from jeans and a t-shirt to workout clothes.

MW: Pantone’s color of the year is Peach Fuzz. Is this year all about pastel colors?

CO: We love Peach Fuzz! Buying for the seasons to come, I’m seeing a ton of pastel colors. Trends are so much fun to explore, but ultimately, I think style is knowing what you love and what works for you! I love pastels, but trust me when I say I’m not afraid to blend and add pops of bolder, brighter colors.

MW: You have had two children since launching your business, Lola + Lina. Has this affected your focus on what you offer the modern mom?

CO: If anything, my two girls inspired me to offer a broader range of products. I plan to cater to the same clientele, with the addition of more selections for children, from apparel to gift items. I’ve also included athleisure and am excited to expand my clothing offerings. I’m all about elevating a throw-on-and-go look. A time crunch to get ready in the morning shouldn’t stop you from feeling fabulous. It’s also worth noting that my girls are tough critics, so when Lila likes a particular print, I know I need to buy it.

MW: We love the playfulness of what you bring to your collections. What inspires you for this look?

CO: My litmus test is does a piece light me up, or can I dream up where I’d love to wear it. I’m most inspired by people, places, and art/design.

MW: Will you plan to open another retail shop in Fort Worth?

One of the few “old time diners” left in town, the folks at West Side Cafe insist on doing things by hand, be it cutting the steaks and pork chops or writing the tickets. Everything, including the amazing desserts, is made from scratch. This year, longtime manager Joel Hancock and his son Brian took over ownership of this Fort Worth classic. Madeworthy talked with Joel about ensuring that this West Side tradition continues long into the future.

Brian Hancock, Bourke Harvey, Gigi Howell, Joel Hancock and Stacy Phillips

Madeworthy: Tell us about the early days of West Side Cafe and your experiences there.

Joel Hancock: I started at West Side Cafe in 2003… We have literally watched some of our guests grow up and now bring their children here. It’s definitely a special place. We pride ourselves on more than “a place to get great food”.

MW: What do you think former owner Tracey Sanford did to make the restaurant so successful and loved by locals for decades?

JH: Tracey was more than a boss and a mentor. He was one of my closest friends for over thirty years… He had a unique approach to the business… He was big on creating an environment for employees to grow and take pride and ownership in the cafe… He strived for perfection. Whether it was food quality or service, he wanted to be number two to no one. He insisted that West Side Cafe be the best!

MW: When Tracey passed away [in 2021], was it then your goal to assume ownership?

JH: Tracey and I had numerous conversations about passing the torch to me at some point. No one saw it unfolding the way it did. I think it’s safe to say that neither of us were ready. It was total devastation for many of us… but with the help of Bourke Harvey and Gigi Howell, two longtime customers, and my son Brian, we were able to keep the West Side family together!

MW: The look and feel of restaurants have changed greatly with millennial influence; how does that affect “country cookin'” cafes?

JH: West Side Cafe is one of the few remaining old-time diners. We pride ourselves on doing things the “old fashioned way.” We still hand write tickets. We prepare our food daily from scratch… None of this would be possible without our amazing staff… If you look in the dictionary under “old school,” there’s a picture of us. We’re not fancy. We’re not pretentious. But we’re genuine. And we honestly appreciate everyone that walks through the door.

Joel Hancock and Stacy Phillips

MW: If it’s someone’s first time to the West Side Cafe, what do you suggest they order?

JH: I always suggest our ultimate burrito. It has eggs, ham, bacon, sausage, cheese, and hash browns. Plus, we have a house made salsa with fire roasted tomatoes and peppers to die for. There’s even a rumor that we may have a secret “light you up” hot sauce. I can neither confirm nor deny that fact. If someone is looking for lunch, our staple item is the chicken fried steak. We also offer an amazing grilled chicken salad as a lighter option. But remember – PIE.

MW: How many eggs do you go through a week?

JH: We go through approximately 30 cases of eggs. At 30 dozen per case, that’s 10,800 eggs.

MW: What is one thing that you will never change at West Side Cafe?

JH: Our culture. Building relationships with our guests is not only our passion, but I believe it’s a vital part of life. In my humble opinion, personal interaction is a healthy thing. To us, our guests are family. We can’t wait to see them and catch up on the latest.

MW: For our readers who are not long-time locals, what do you love most about Fort Worth that you can’t find in other places?

JH: For anyone new to the area, breathe in the city. Enjoy the friendly people and the extensive history around us. There’s a reason Fort Worth is becoming a movie-making hub. “Where the West Begins” is not just a hard-earned nickname. Plus, we have great museums, gardens, and concerts. We even have Concerts in the Garden – mind blowing, right? Fort Worth has great high school and college sports. We’re driving distance to all major pro sports. Dallas is a short drive AND you get to come home to Fort Worth. (My apologies. I had to take the obligatory jab at Big D. It’s what we do.)

The post Made in Fort Worth: West Side Cafe first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

Founded by three Fort Worthians – Johnny Simons, Diane Simons, and Douglas Balentine – Hip Pocket Theatre has maintained its sense of anarchic playfulness and its repertoire of genre-busting performances despite becoming a beloved Fort Worth institution. From world premiere productions to stagings of the classics, Hip Pocket Theatre has been a pillar of the Fort Worth theatrical world since 1976. Madeworthy recently talked to Lake Simons, one of Johnny and Diana’s daughters who has taken over the management of Hip Pocket Theatre with her sister, Lorca, about becoming an institution, staying ahead of the curve, and performing under the stars in the wide-open Texas sky.

Madeworthy: For our readers who haven’t been to see a performance under the stars, can you sum up what defines a Hip Pocket Theatre production?

Lake Simons: We share theatre work that is off the beaten track. We strive to experiment with the form. Hip Pocket has always been rooted in a homemade style of theatre making that weaves experimental theatre with nods to traditional forms. Our theatre artists explore a variety of ways to tell a story- through words, images, movement, dance, puppetry, mask, pantomime, commedia, music, song, and poetry.

MW: When Hip Pocket started in 1976, it was the brash, genre-busting newcomer to the theater scene in North Texas. Now, you’re a Fort Worth institution, but you’re still on the cutting edge of theatrical performance. How does an institution keep its relevance?

LS: We continue to honor what the founders created and why they created it while also seeking new ways to push artistic boundaries. Theatre isn’t stagnant. It is an ever-developing artistic expression, and we continue to explore the medium. Fort Worth needs this outlet, and the artists that create on our stage need it.

MW: Founder Johnny Simons retired a couple of years ago. He was the driving force of the company for the entirety of his tenure, adapting works, writing, and acting. How have you filled his admittedly unfillable shoes?

LS: His daughters have taken the helm. [I’m] the Managing Artistic Director, and Lorca Simons is the Producing Artistic Director. Together, we are dedicated to honoring his vision and simultaneously infusing our own individual artistic visions into the future of Hip Pocket.

MW: Can you tell us a little about the rest of the 2023 season?

LS: We are currently in rehearsals for our mini-plays festival called Testing Ground 3+3 pairing three playwrights with three directors. 84-year-old Molemo! will share his pantomime – Old And In The Way – for three night only. [Editor’s Note: Molemo! is founder Johnny Simons’ artistic alter-ego.] We end our 47th season with a stage adaptation of The Fly, directed by Shawn Gann with original music created by Joe Rogers. An extra-special bonus is the Puppetry Pageant led by NYC puppetry artists, Erin Orr and Chris Green, to be created and performed by the DFW community as a pre-show experience on the closing weekend of The Fly.

MW: The Theatre’s whimsy seems to me uniquely Fort Worthian. Do you think the Hip Pocket Theatre could exist anywhere else?

LS: It is hard to imagine Hip Pocket in another city or state. The roots are deep in Fort Worth. So much of what Hip Pocket is today came from three people (Johnny Simons, Diane Simons, and Douglas Balentine), all three Fort Worthians sharing themselves as artists on the Hip Pocket stage. Although Lorca and I do not have Fort Worth addresses, we are drawn to our Texas roots every season to continue the tradition.

MW: One of the Theatre’s signatures is performing under the stars. Doing anything outdoors in North Texas during the summer and fall is always a gamble – if it isn’t storming, it’s sizzling. Why does the Theatre continue under the stars?

LS: It is primitive, and that is the real deal. Nature and creation go hand in hand. Making art under the stars without walls pushes us and makes us vulnerable which keeps both it and us present. And there is nothing like hearing the cicadas sing and feeling a gentle breeze as one steps onto that magical roughhewn stage to share a story. It is worth it.

The post Made in Fort Worth: Hip Pocket Theatre first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

In each installment of Made in Fort Worth, Madeworthy shines a spotlight on a local business that is undeniably Fort Worth. For our travel issue, we thought we would feature a company that makes the original travel snack – beef jerky. The process of seasoning and drying meat not only prevents meat from spoiling, it makes it supremely portable. And delicious!

We spoke with Darlene and Eric Marion, the owners of Uncle Ron’s Beef Jerky. You may have come across the Marions at various farmers markets around the area, or you may have stopped at their brick-and-mortar location on Westcreek Drive. If so, you know that their jerky makes the perfect travel snack, full of flavor and protein to keep you going all day long.

Madeworthy: How did your jerky-making journey begin? Was it a hobby first?

Eric Marion: Our jerky-making journey began from receiving a gift from my brother Ron… the recipe for the original beef jerky flavor. It began as a hobby, and friends and family loved the finished product.

MW: What made you decide to start making jerky as a business?

EM: I was a member of Corporate America for many years. After my position with the company ended, I found myself in need of work… I knew I had to pivot my career. I had this recipe for beef jerky that everyone loved. My wife and I decided to start this journey. I quickly adapted new recipes and flavors to provide a variety of options available for all.

MW: How is the jerky made? Smoked? Dried? Both? Other? What is the difference?

EM: Our jerky starts as a slab of beef. It is then cut into half, and from there it is cut into steaks. Then all fat and blood pockets are removed by hand. Once that’s done, it’s hand sliced into strips and dropped into marinade. [After marinating], it’s then loaded in the dehydrator piece by piece… Once it’s fully cooked to perfection, it’s then bagged, labeled, and sealed for sale. The difference between Uncle Ron’s beef jerky and others is ours is 100% beef that is sliced by hand across the grain [for easy eating] and perfectly marinated to have flavor in every bite.

MW: You have a lot of flavors, 18 by my count. Which are your most popular?

EM: The most popular flavors are Coarse Black Pepper, Regular, Smokehouse, Original Peppered, Spicy Garlic, and Sweet & Spicy.

MW: Do you source your beef locally or where does it come from?

EM: Our beef is sourced from our local meat market. We found them to be a consistent source to keep up with the demand of the business.

MW: Do you make jerky from other meats?

EM: We currently only make beef jerky. However, we have considered other products such as turkey, deer, and mushroom jerky.

MW: What makes your jerky better than others out there?

EM: What makes my jerky better than others out there is the fact that there is flavor in every bite because we hand slice and marinate. Also, there are no artificial fillers; it’s 100% Angus beef.

MW: Besides jerky, what other products do you make and sell?

EM: Besides jerky, we sell a variety of trail mixes. We also offer chocolate-covered walnuts, pecans, and almonds… T-Shirts and gift packages are also available.

MW: Where can Fort Worthians buy Uncle Ron’s Jerky?

EM: You can purchase our beef jerky at our shop at 5677 Westcreek Drive, Suite C, or at uncleronsbeefjerky.com. We’re at the Clearfork Market every Saturday and the Benbrook Farmers Market.

MW: For those who don’t live here or if folks want to send your jerky as a gift, do you offer shipping?

EM: You can send a gift or order online. You will receive a free gift with all purchases made online. This will be a free bag of our beef jerky of a flavor you did not order. If you choose to send our jerky as a gift, we will pass your free gift along to the recipient and include a note stating that this is a gift from you.

The post Made in Fort Worth: Uncle Ron’s Beef Jerky first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

“Anyone can study music” is the guiding principle behind the Fort Worth Conservatory of Music and Fine Arts. From Early Childhood and Kindermusik classes for babies and toddlers to private lessons in voice, piano, violin, and guitar for any age, the Conservatory wants to inspire a lifelong love of music. Part of the Royal Conservatory of Music Certificate program, the Conservatory aspires to excellence, inspiration, and fun.

We reached out to the Conservatory’s founder and director, Dr. Jill Sprenger.

Madeworthy: What was the impetus for starting the Conservatory?

Jill Springer: My journey started with a great teacher, as it does for most musicians. From third through 12th grade, my teacher instilled in me a love for piano and music education. I became a university professor teaching advanced piano and pedagogy – in other words, teaching teachers to teach. After 30 years in university education, I dreamed of a conservatory where I and hand-picked teachers could give students of all levels and ages a solid technical foundation and a lifelong love of music.

MW: Tell us about how the Conservatory came into being.

JS: As a professional violinist and teacher, my husband Kurt was immediately on board [with the Conservatory]. We live in one of the original Ryan Place houses, and we knew we wanted a location nearby. As 2018 came to a close, Kurt and I began looking for a suitable building in the Southside.

We found the perfect location on Hemphill that was already gutted and ready to be tailored to our specifications. It was a bit nerve-wracking… the electricity was turned on two days before, and the pianos were moved in the day before the opening. We can laugh about it now.

Photo courtesy of Fort Worth Conservatory of Music

MW: What are your facilities like?

JS: We have five teaching rooms and five new Collora pianos: three uprights and two grands… Out of our five teaching rooms, one serves as our recital hall, and [another] holds our group theory classes.

MW: What level of training do students need to start with you?

JS: Students don’t need any prior training to study at the Conservatory. It is our pleasure to give students of all levels the skills they need to enjoy a lifetime of music-making! For our students who choose to pursue professional music, we provide opportunities to enter competitions and perform at a very high level. Several students were awarded full scholarships to TCU, and another Conservatory voice high school senior was offered a full academic and performing scholarship for four years to her chosen university. Past students majored in music at schools such as Oberlin Conservatory, Baylor University, and the Peabody Conservatory of Music.

Photo courtesy of Fort Worth Conservatory of Music

MW: Is there an age limit to begin learning music?

JS: It is never too early or too late to begin your musical journey! We have thriving Early Childhood Music classes for babies as early as 6 months old, and we teach adults far into their retirement who finally have the time and resources to realize their lifelong dream of studying music.

MW: Who is the ideal Conservatory student?

JS: Our motto is “Excellence, Inspiration, and Fun.” We strive to create a community of students who are watching the growth of other students in group activities and recitals and think “I want that!” We strive to keep students motivated within an encouraging environment. And we love fun events where the students bond. This spring, we will be bringing our music into the community, playing in nursing homes and assisted living centers.

MW: Tell us about the faculty members and their educational backgrounds.

JS: Our faculty members are all musicians of the highest caliber who are themselves advanced performing musicians. Each has a passion for guiding and nurturing young musicians to develop their full potential and skill. We strive to be the kind of teachers who can encourage students through the inevitable ups and downs of learning an instrument.

Photo courtesy of Fort Worth Conservatory of Music

MW: What can new students expect at the Conservatory?

JS: Every student can expect an encouraging environment that promotes excellence, inspiration, and fun! Depending on their age, instrument, and experience, they’ll be paired with a private teacher or group to build the foundation they need to reach their unique potential and enjoy a lifetime of musical expression.

MW: How can prospective students or their parents learn more about the programs at the Conservatory?

JS: You can find an overview of our programs on our website.
