We love Tadeo Ando’s beautifully designed Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The museum, with its beautiful simplicity that allows the art to shine, was selected as the best designed building in Texas by Architectural Digest.
So it makes sense that the Modern, in partnership with the American Institute of Architects Fort Worth, is celebrating Architecture Week (April 13-19) with a series of special events including exclusive film screenings, guided architecture tours, and a hands-on family program, Box City.
Join AIA Fort Worth and the Modern for an engaging, family-friendly celebration of Architecture Week with Box City! This interactive workshop, led by members and educators from AIA Fort Worth along with local artist Claire Kennedy, invites children and families to explore the principles of architecture and urban design through creative play.
Using recycled materials and managed by Kennedy’s creative guidance, participants will design and construct their own buildings, contributing to a collaborative miniature city. Along the way, families will learn about architectural concepts, city planning, and sustainable design while gaining insight into city permits and the unique functions of different buildings within a community.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own boxes—such as shipping, shoe, or cereal boxes—to transform into buildings, though materials will also be provided. The layout of Box City, inspired by a special painting in the Modern’s permanent collection, will come to life on a large-scale, pre-painted canvas serving as the city grid and vibrant foundation for the collaborative creation. Additionally, a public park will be incorporated into the city layout, where guests will have the opportunity to design small sculptures, contributing to a public art installation within the cityscape.
Perfect for all ages, this hands-on program fosters creativity, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for the built environment. Drop in anytime and take part in building a dream city! The completed Box City will remain on display in the Modern’s lobby through the end of the day on Sunday, April 20.
My Favorite Films series includes tales of romance, humor, suspense, satire, and heroism featuring films since 1945. In April, we celebrate Architecture Week at the Museum, featuring a selection of delightful design-inspired films throughout the entire month.

Designing My Future: Exhibition of 2024 High School Architecture Summer Camp Student Work
Saturday, April 19
10 am–5 pm
Modern Education Department
Free admission
The Designing My Future exhibition showcases the innovative tiny-home community designs crafted by 16 Dallas-Fort Worth high school students during an intensive three-day summer camp program.
Students were challenged to design a community of tiny homes, considering real-world constraints and applying newly acquired skills. The exhibition presents their final projects, showcasing their creativity, problem-solving abilities, and budding architectural talent.
The exhibition will be on view in the hallway of the Modern’s education department during our family program, Box City, on Saturday, April 19, from 10 am–5 pm. Join us in celebrating these young designers and their inspiring visions for the future of housing. Their work demonstrates the power of education, mentorship, and creativity in shaping the next generation of architects.
The Architecture Summer Camp, a collaborative effort between AIA Dallas and AIA Fort Worth, was hosted by the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) Design/Build Studio. The program immersed students in the world of architecture through an instructional sketching workshop, hands-on activities, site visits to local landmarks, a housing panel discussion with UTA faculty and local architects, and a career pathways roundtable.
This exhibition is showcased as a part of AIA National’s Architecture Week.
The camp and exhibition were funded, in part, by a grant from the AIA College of Fellows.
