Journey to the West at the National Cowgirl Museum
Visitors to the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame will get up close with props, costumes and photography from the record-breaking Paramount+ series 1883 when a new exhibit opens February 11, 2022. 1883: The Journey West was created by the museum in partnership with 101 Studios, Visit Fort Worth and the Fort Worth Film Commission.
101 Studios, the studio responsible for 1883 and Yellowstone, curated items for the exhibition including an authentic wagon, a camp set-up and wardrobe worn by Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliott and LaMonica Garrett along with behind-the-scenes photography.
“A ‘cowgirl’ represents fortitude, determination, tenacity and grit. It is that indomitable spirit that we are so thrilled to celebrate through the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame’s upcoming exhibit: 1883: The Journey West. We are grateful for the efforts of our partners: Visit Fort Worth, Kit Moncrief, Nicole Sheridan, the National Cowgirl Museum and the Fort Worth Film Commission in bringing this exhibit to the public.”
The exhibition will include beaded items from National Cowgirl Museum Hall of Fame Honoree Cathy A. Smith, an artist dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century cowboy and cowgirl and the Plains Indians. Smith’s original craftwork was featured as part of the costuming for the Lakota, Crow, and Comanche tribes in 1883. Her work has been featured in over 35 Western films including Dances with Wolves, Comanche Moon and Geronimo.
“We are honored to host the 1883:The Journey West exhibition. The ties to Fort Worth history, pioneers, and trailblazers make it a natural fit. The captivating series complements some of the real-life stories of very own Honorees,” said Associate Executive Director Dr. Diana Vela.
Filming for 1883 took place in Fort Worth and surrounding areas from July to October of 2021. The show employed hundreds of local production crew and extras, used local businesses and heavily featured locations like the Fort Worth Stockyards.
“We are proud to partner with the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame and 101 Studios on this exhibition,” said Bob Jameson, president and CEO of Visit Fort Worth, which includes the Fort Worth Film Commission. “Film and television production not only creates jobs locally, it provides an opportunity to drive tourism to our city through location tours and exhibitions like this one.”
1883 is written and directed by Fort Worth native, Taylor Sheridan. Sheridan, is also known for Yellowstone, Sicaro, Hell or Highwater, Wind River and more.
1883: The Journey West opens February 11 through March 21. Entrance to the exhibition is included with admission to the museum. For more information visit www.cowgirl.net.
