Something New, Something Exciting
CMSFW has introduced a new instructional system, called Building Blocks of Music, into its education program for elementary children.
Alton Adkins, a Fort Worth Symphony horn player, Gary Levinson, CMSFW Artistic Director, Karen Ray, CWSFW board member, and Natasha Costello, CMSFW Educational Director, created and introduced the new system as way to develop an appreciation and understanding of music and of the music-making process in elementary and middle school children. The students are introduced to various types of music from pop to classical as well as the instruments and musical terms used to produce the music. An exciting addition is the presentation of art that, along with the music, creates experiences in mood, creativity, and inspiration. Additionally, children are provided opportunities to express their interpretations of the music being performed.
Building Blocks of Music is designed for the SPARC after-school program for underserved children and can be easily modified to fit any situation. Last spring, programs were presented at the Art of Living (a shelter for homeless children), elementary schools, and at a YMCA facility. Plans are in the process of being developed to reach additional sites beginning in September.
