The King of Soul, Sam Cooke bridged the gap, bringing black music to white audiences. His voice, combined with his ability to meld soul, gospel, and pop into a new genre of music, made him on of the most popular artists of his day. Cooke died at age 33 under murky circumstances, leaving an incredible but incomplete back catalog of classics.
