If your summer travel plans include a visit to Italy this year, you’re in luck, as this year the Roman Catholic Church celebrates a Jubilee year, also known as a Holy Year. While Jubilee years are times of deep religious significance for Catholics around the world, they offer opportunities for non-Catholics as well.

The idea of a Jubilee year finds its origins in the Old Testament, where every 50th year was a time of forgiveness of debts, liberation of slaves, and rest for the land. Inspired by this biblical tradition, Pope Boniface VIII instituted the first Catholic Jubilee in the year 1300. Originally planned for every 100th year, the frequency was later adjusted, and Jubilees typically take place every 25 years, though special Jubilees are occasionally instituted.

Pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square

In the past, Jubilees have drawn millions of religious pilgrims and secular visitors to Rome, because each Jubilee year offers an opportunity for spiritual renewal. The theme for the 2025 Jubilee is “Pilgrims of Hope”, reflecting the late Pope Francis’s desire for the Church to be a beacon of hope to the entire world through community, mercy, and active charity.

Beyond the religious and spiritual implications for Catholics, the Jubilee signifies expanded opportunities for all visitors to explore the incomparably rich history of one of the world’s most important cities.

The most iconic and religiously important element of a Jubilee is the opening of the Holy Doors. The Holy Doors are special doors located in the four papal basilicas of Rome: St. Peter’s Basilica, St. John Lateran, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. Typically sealed shut from the inside, these doors are opened only during a Jubilee. For Catholics, passage through the Holy Doors symbolizes a spiritual transformation of forgiveness and reconciliation.

Visiting these holy sites is not exclusive to Catholics, however. People of all faiths are invited to pass through the doors. While for non-Catholics this passage may not hold any spiritual significance, the historical significance of the doors and what lies beyond – relics, art, and artifacts only viewable during a Jubilee – is undeniable. So, if you are in Rome this year, a visit to the four papal basilicas to pass through the Holy Doors is a must. It will be 25 years before you get another chance.

Rome is always busy in the summer, and during a Jubilee year, those crowds can swell even more. To handle the expanded tourist population, the entire country of Italy has been preparing for over a year. The Italian government allocated over €2 billion for infrastructure projects tied to the Jubilee. New pedestrian areas, enhanced public transportation, upgrades to sanitation and security, as well as expanded medical and tourist services have been implemented.

The Vatican and local dioceses throughout the country have organized a range of spiritual and cultural events to celebrate the Jubilee. Museums and churches will display sacred art, relics, and historical exhibits that reflect the Jubilee’s importance and feature pieces seen only during Jubilee years. The Vatican Museums and various Roman institutions have planned major exhibits that showcase items of historical, cultural and religious significance.

If your travels take you to Italy this year but you cannot make it to Rome, or you simply prefer to avoid it, special Jubilee events will be taking place in just about every other Italian town and city, as well. While the Jubilee is considered to be mostly a Roman event, Italy is an overwhelmingly Catholic country, and Jubilee years are celebrated all over. Florence, Milan, Venice, and especially Assisi are hosting Jubilee events. These cities will likely not be as affected from a larger-than-usual tourist influx as Rome will be, but there will be expanded religious and cultural experiences available for visitors.

Regardless of faith, visitors to Italy will be able to partake of a unique spiritual and cultural event this summer. For Catholics, the 2025 Holy Year offers a powerful opportunity for inner transformation. For Catholics and non-Catholics alike, the opportunities for cultural enrichment abound. Whether one visits to walk through a Holy Door, attend a Mass at St. Peter’s, or simply to soak in the enhance atmosphere of history, art and architecture, the Catholic Jubilee of 2025 promises to be a memorable time for anyone visiting Italy this year.

“But wait,” I hear you say. “It’s only March.” Sure. It’s only March. But spring break is in TWO WEEKS, and after that comes SUMMER. Which means we need to find something to keep the Little Darlings from killing each other STAT.

Luckily for all of us, we have the perfect solution. Introducing the 2025 Tanglewood Moms Summer Camp Guide!

Whether it is a sleepaway camp or a day camp close to home, summer camp can be an important part of a child’s physical and mental development. A few years ago, the American Camp Association did a study on the value of summer camp. The study showed marked growth in campers’ independence, self-confidence, and self-assuredness. Ninety-three percent of campers reported that camp allowed them to become friends with people who are from different backgrounds. Seventy-four percent of campers reported that they did things that they were afraid to do at first. Seventy percent of parents reported that their child gained self-confidence at camp.

Camp can expand a child’s horizons in ways that school, with its heavy emphasis on test results, cannot. Whether it’s doing a ballet intensive, building a robot, learning a new sport, or putting on a play, camp allows children to focus on something they love or learn something entirely new.

Perhaps most importantly, camp allows children to just be children. Yes, there are expectations placed on them at camp. They have to learn to work with strangers and resolve minor conflicts that may arise. They have to learn that their every want will not be accommodated. But without the pressure of grades and the expectations of family, teachers, and peer groups, campers are free to simply live and soak up every adventure and learning opportunity. Simply put, they can stop being students and simply enjoy being kids.

There are many wonderful possibilities for your child this summer in Fort Worth. No matter what it is that makes your kiddo smile, they can do it here. We hope that this will be a comprehensive list of summer camp options in Fort Worth for you to consult from year to year. We’ve organized our index to separate camps by age as well as theme for easy navigation. Many of our partners have generously sponsored ads with full details about the camps they offer. If you’d like to learn more about advertising with us, please email tanglewoodmoms@gmail.com.

Happy 2025!

You will be reading this letter weeks after I wrote it. Our publishing schedule is such that we had to finish everything for this article before Christmas. It seems so long ago now.

While it’s the beginning of 2025, all shiny and new and full of possibilities, for you, it’s the end of 2024 for me. And the end of the year always makes me prone to looking back. My nostalgic frame of mind, coupled with the fact that Tanglewood Moms is turning 10 in 2025, makes me incredibly sappy, my children assure me, so I apologize in advance.

Tanglewood Moms started, as many of you know, as a group on Facebook for women in Fort Worth. It was immediately popular and grew quickly. I joined as a member about a year after it started when I needed recommendations for a plumber.

I always liken the original group to a local Angie’s List. The members can always be relied upon for the best recommendations for almost anything you can possibly need. Your kiddo knocked her front teeth out, and you need a pediatric dentist? No problem. You finally decided to take the plunge and install a pool? Tanglewood Moms have you covered.

So, it was natural for Victoria, the group’s founder, to extend it into a website. TanglewoodMoms.com went live in June 2015 and proved to be as popular as the group. The website was a local business directory and blog. After a few months, Victoria realized that she could give local writers an opportunity to be published on the blog, and she put out a call for writers.

This is where I come into the picture. I started writing for the blog and quickly offered my proofreading services to the other contributors. This amuses me because I never learned grammar in school. We were part of a pedagogical experiment: if you expose children to great literature, you will absorb great grammar. Trust me, that’s not the case. I wouldn’t know a dangling participle if it stopped dangling and bit me on the bahootay. However, my father made me turn in every single essay I wrote to him, and through his rather harsh proofreading, I learned how to write. Thanks, Dad!

Because I was proofreading articles before Victoria published them on the blog, she offered to teach me to publish them. I took over the management of the blog in early 2016 and got to know so many good writers in our community. A year later, as we were talking after a meeting, Victoria mentioned that she thought we should start a magazine. I laughed. Okay, I guffawed. Print was dead; didn’t Victoria know that? Well, four months and one week later, Madeworthy debuted.

I’ve been a part of Tanglewood Moms since November 2015, and honestly, I will be forever grateful. It’s only a little hyperbolic to say that Tanglewood Moms changed my life. When I started writing for the blog, I was a single mom who was so downtrodden I could only see the soles of the shoes of people passing by. Through Tanglewood Moms, I’ve made some of the best friends of my life, I’ve gotten to attend events I would never have dreamed of attending before, and I’ve found that I’m a pretty good storyteller. But mostly, I’m proud of the community we have created on Facebook, on the website, and through the magazine.

I get to tell stories for a living. I get to explore our city, meet its people, and then tell you all about them. How incredible is that?

So here’s to 2025, and here’s to more Tanglewood Moms and Madeworthy! Here’s to more friendship and more stories and more community. Most importantly, here’s to you, dear reader. We couldn’t do it without you!

The Torlonia Foundation announced today the North American tour of Myth and Marble: Ancient Roman Sculpture from the Torlonia Collection, a major exhibition of ancient Roman masterworks marking the first time these works have been shown outside of Europe.

Selections from the Collection, assembled and stewarded by the Torlonia Family beginning in the early-19th century, will premiere at the Art Institute of Chicago in March before traveling to the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts as part of the Foundation’s mission to showcase these extraordinary historical works to the public.

Established during the course of the 19th century by the Franco-Italian banker Prince Giovanni Torlonia and his son Alessandro, the Torlonia Collection was handed down over generations, eventually growing into the largest private collection of ancient Roman sculptures. Today, the Torlonia Foundation represents the culmination of the Family’s continued passion for art. Created at the behest of Prince Alessandro Torlonia (1925–2017), the Foundation’s mission is to preserve and promote the Torlonia Collection and Villa Albani Torlonia. The Foundation is an exceptional repository of artistic heritage, with works that speak to some of the most pivotal moments of Western civilization, the history of collecting, and the history of archaeology and restoration.

In 1876, Prince Alessandro Torlonia (1800-1886) created a museum to house and exhibit the Family’s holdings, which was open to small groups until its closure at the onset of World War II. The sculptures remained unseen by the public from that time until the Foundation’s first exhibition at the Musei Capitolini in Rome in 2020. Next year the collection will come to North America after drawing unprecedented audiences (more than 600,000 visitors to date) at the Louvre, the first presentation of the collection outside of Rome.

The curators of Myth & Marble: Ancient Roman Sculpture from the Torlonia Collection are Lisa Ayla Çakmak and Katharine A. Raff of the Art Institute of Chicago. The exhibition is co-organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Torlonia Foundation, in collaboration with the Kimbell Art Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and The Museum Box. All of the sculptures in the exhibition have been restored by the Foundation with the support of Bvlgari.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue co-published by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Torlonia Foundation, edited by Lisa Ayla Çakmak and Katharine A. Raff, with essays by Silvia Beltrametti and Salvatore Settis.

The North American presentation will feature 58 highlights from the Torlonia Collection, including 24 newly restored works that have not been on view in nearly a century. The sculptures date from approximately the 5th century BCE to the early 4th century CE, with the majority of the works dating to the High Imperial period (1st–2nd centuries CE). Highlights include examples of the most emblematic genres of ancient marble sculpture, acquired by the Torlonia Family from the most prominent collections of Rome’s patrician families, as well as from excavations made on the Family’s own estates throughout Italy.

“The Foundation is excited to be sharing the Torlonia Collection with audiences in North America for the first time. This exceptional group of ancient sculptures is a testament to the enduring cultural legacy of ancient Rome, as well as the vision and passion of multiple generations of the Torlonia Family,” said Alessandro Poma Murialdo, President of the Torlonia Foundation.

“By sharing these rare masterpieces with the public, the Foundation aims to deepen appreciation for and foster a renewed connection with the artistic achievements of the ancient world,” said Carlotta Loverini Botta, Director of the Torlonia Foundation. “The universal spirit that has always informed classical art must continue to be nurtured for generations to come. It is a universal language that thrives on the ongoing reinvention of the classics through engagement with modern culture—a vision brilliantly highlighted through the curatorial approach of Lisa Ayla Çakmak and Katharine A. Raff.”

The presentation is organized thematically in six sections, opening with “Icons of the Torlonia Collection,” featuring three of the most historically significant sculptures from the Collection. Portrait of a Young Woman, called the Maiden of Vulci, among the best-known of the Torlonia Marbles, provides a singular example of Roman female portraiture from the early Augustan era. The exhibition continues with “Imperial Portraits,” featuring works drawn from the Collection’s expansive holdings of depictions of the reigning emperors of the 2nd century CE and their imperial families, including a remarkable selection of portraits of women. These works provide a window into the behind-the-scenes power wielded by the women of elite Roman families, spotlighting an often-overlooked aspect of the ancient society.

The next section, “Torlonia Excavations,” features sculptures found on the Torlonia Family’s properties in Rome and the surrounding suburbs and their estate in Porto, Portugal, an area that served as a key harbor during ancient Roman times. Highlights include Attic Votive Relief, dating to end of the 5th century BCE, the earliest sculpture of the entire Torlonia Collection, and Portus Relief, exceptional for its intricate details of a harbor scene.

“Exceptional Restorations” spotlights sculptures that have been transformed into new works, reflecting how from the time of the Renaissance, collectors like the Torlonia Family preferred unfragmented objects to decorate their homes and populate their lived environments. On view is Rondanini Type Medusa on a Trapezophoros (Table Leg) with a Griffin’s Head, an object that appears to be created from distinct ancient sculptural fragments (the Medusa head and the Griffon-headed table leg). Sometimes great artists were engaged to update or perfect ancient fragments: for example, a statue of a reclining ram features an exuberant head carved by Gian Lorenzo Bernini around 1620. The next section, “Gods and Goddesses,” features sculptures depicting the myriad deities of the broader Roman world, illustrating how, as it expanded, the Roman Empire increasingly embraced aspects of Greek culture such as mythology, cementing a shared Greco-Roman cultural heritage.

Statue of a Resting Goat
© Torlonia Foundation

The final section, “Funerary Sculpture,” reflects a major strength of the Torlonia Collection: funerary monuments, which underscore the longstanding Roman tradition of commemorating the dead and visually celebrating one’s personal identity for eternity. On view are a number of exceptional sarcophagi (stone coffins), which are among the largest sculpted works in marble to survive from ancient Rome.

The tour reinforces the work of the Foundation to advance the appreciation and understanding of this unparalleled collection and the rich cultural heritage it represents. The Foundation’s mission is carried out through a continuous joint effort between the public and private sectors, including with the cooperation of the Italian Ministry of Culture. The Foundation is supported by a longstanding collaboration with Bvlgari as the principal sponsor of the restoration project since its inception in Rome and throughout the global tour, and Chiomenti, who has lent invaluable support to the Foundation’s core activities.

United by a shared passion for art and collecting, the Torlonia Foundation and Fondazione Bvlgari have joined forces to undertake the conservation of the Torlonia Marbles, ensuring the continued relevance of their historic and aesthetic value and safeguarding these masterpieces for future study. This enduring partnership has seen the Roman Maison serve as the main sponsor for the restoration of over 150 statues from the Collection to date, as part of an initiative aimed at raising awareness of the vital study and conservation work carried out by the Torlonia Foundation in the Laboratori Torlonia (Torlonia Workshops).

Bvlgari’s support for this restoration underscores its broader commitment to cultural projects and artistic patronage in Rome. Over the years, the Maison has spearheaded numerous initiatives to preserve Rome’s incomparable creative heritage for future generations. This sponsorship also pays homage to Bvlgari’s Greco-Roman roots and its enduring dedication to the classical aesthetics, reflected in its commitment to excellence in design and craftsmanship.

The post Ancient Roman Masterpieces Coming to the Kimbell first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

Alex Da Corte: The Whale
March 2–September 7, 2025

Alex Da Corte: The Whale is the first museum exhibition to survey the Venezuelan American interdisciplinary artist’s long relationship with painting. Organized by the Modern and Curator Alison Hearst, the exhibition focuses on the past decade of Da Corte’s career and includes more than forty paintings, several drawings, and a video that considers painting as a performative act. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with a special contribution from Da Corte and essays by Hearst, scholar Kemi Adeyemi, art historian Suzanne Hudson, and poet and critic Hanif Abdurraqib.

Da Corte is globally recognized for his hybrid installations combining painting, performance, video, and sculpture. Immersed in the history of art, design, and pop culture, Da Corte’s combinations evoke mixed feelings, such as fantasy and malice, while crossing hierarchies of high and low culture. His works combine modernist color theory and the spatial experiments of Post-Minimalist sculpture to consider topics including consumerism, persona, sex, invisible labor, taste, power, and desire.

Painting, forever brimming with the weight of its own history and historically itself an uncanny threshold of consumption, represents “the mouth of the whale” to Da Corte. The artist situates himself here, within a crowded, beautiful trash-scape of contemporary culture, digesting advertisements, animation cels, CD covers and liner notes, art history, and more. The ephemeral pop culture source materials referenced in Da Corte’s paintings make evident how the things we identify with, or use to define us, evolve over time.

To realize this reconstructed vision of painting, Da Corte stretches the medium’s traditional boundaries. The exhibition incorporates Puffy Paintings in stuffed, upholstered neoprene, Shampoo Paintings comprised of drugstore hair products, and sculptural Slatboard Paintings, where found objects protrude from the slatted grooves found in everyday commercial displays. The remaining paintings in the exhibition are reverse-glass paintings, in which the artist employs a process often used in animated celluloids and sign-making.

Feeling Color: Aubrey Williams and Frank Bowling
March 15–July 27, 2025

Feeling Color: Aubrey Williams and Frank Bowling, organized by the Modern and Curator María Elena Ortiz, celebrates the work of these two artists and their contributions to the story of abstract painting in the late twentieth century. Williams (1926–90) and Bowling (b. 1934) migrated from British Guiana (now Guyana) in South America to European and American cities in the 1950s, escaping social upheavals in their native country. Expanding on the international legacies of abstraction that are among the Modern’s central concerns, these artists’ works show that, even in moments of despair, art creates a space for refuge, reckoning, and imagination. This exhibition puts both artists in conversation, illustrating Williams’s powerful commitment to investigating abstract forms and Bowling’s painterly and experimental approach. Williams was Bowling’s elder, and together their works provide an opportunity to reflect on the power of art and abstraction in the twentieth century.

Feeling Color presents Bowling’s influential Map series, 1967–71, and his later poured paintings, which evidence sociopolitical concerns and explore the materiality of paint. Williams’s works include examples from two painting series, Shostakovich, 1969–81, and The Olmec-Maya and Now, 1981–85, alongside other paintings and drawings. These works reflect the artists’ histories by combining modernist abstraction with imagery derived from African diasporic dwellings and the Indigenous cultures of South America, each pointing to the complexity of their postcolonial heritage. These are works that embrace color, movement, experimentation, and abstraction to convey human emotion.

Aubrey Williams, born in British Guiana, is an important figure in British postwar painting, representing an approach toward abstraction that incorporates cross-cultural and transatlantic conversations. Originally trained as Agricultural Field Officer in Guyana, Williams moved to London in the 1950s to study engineering but changed course, earning an art degree from the St. Martin’s School of Art. The artist travelled extensively throughout Europe, created works in Jamaica and Florida in the 1960s and 1970s, and eventually settled in London until his death. Awarded the Commonwealth Prize in Painting by Queen Elizabeth II in 1965, Williams was a founding member of the 1960s Caribbean Artists Movement in London. His works have been exhibited internationally and are included in several prestigious collections in the US and Britain.

Frank Bowling OBE RA was elected to Britain’s Royal Academy in 2005 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. He is a pivotal figure in British abstract painting, contributing to the canon for over six decades. Born in British Guiana, Bowling migrated to London in the 1950s to study art. Eventually, he moved to New York City, keeping art studios in both cities. In New York, he cultivated a community that included critic Clement Greenberg and like-minded artists such as Jack Whitten and Al Loving Jr. His work has been exhibited widely and is part of prestigious collections around the world.

David-Jeremiah: The Fire This Time
August 16–November 2, 2025

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth presents David-Jeremiah: The Fire This Time, organized by guest curator Christopher Blay. The exhibition’s title, derived from that of James Baldwin’s novel The Fire Next Time (1963), refers to a stanza of the spiritual hymn “Mary Don’t You Weep”: “God gave Noah the rainbow sign, / No more water, the fire next time!”

The body of work on view in this exhibition is a group of vertical assemblages of black and other monochromatic paintings on shaped wood that form an installation. Collectively titled Hood Niggas Camping, the twenty-eight works stand over ten feet tall. This primary configuration surrounds viewers completely.

Fire is a major motif in David-Jeremiah’s work. Figuratively, fire is the crucible through which the artist has passed, having spent nearly four years in prison for an aggravated robbery he committed as a teenager. During that “staycation,” as he refers to it, David-Jeremiah conceived of binders full of work, operating in a conceptual space that defies any self-imposed rules made from the comfort of most artists’ studios. Birthing new modes of self-reflective determination and urgency born out of detention, David-Jeremiah brings the fire this time, incinerating what has come before to propose something new: confinement-conceptualism. His maximalist approach to art-making feeds the flames of Hood Niggas Camping and its towering paintings. This is a purifying, refining fire—a disruptive, controlled burn that course-corrects the trajectory of conceptualism. It is fire.

In his artistic practice, David-Jeremiah engages with the ritualistic context of fire and flame. Whether it is sending dead cops to hell in a race to redeem their souls, as in his 2019 painting Hamborghini Rally: Soul Hunt City (‘68 Semipro), or the last in the series of his I Drive Thee tondo paintings manifesting its soul over the flames of an incinerator for a succession of urns in L’Anima, 2023 (part of his 2024‒25 exhibition at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts), the flames are there. In the presentation at the Modern, his paintings-as-figures bask in the glow of embers that we, the viewers, create. David-Jeremiah’s work resides at the edge of the fire, and we see our faces and selves reflected back in the flickering flames.

Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting
October 12, 2025–January 18, 2026

Organized by the National Portrait Gallery, London, and Senior Curator of Contemporary Collections, Sarah Howgate, Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting is the first major museum exhibition in the US dedicated to the work of one of the world’s foremost figure painters. The exhibition will be overseen at the Modern by Chief Curator Andrea Karnes. Saville rose to prominence in the early 1990s, following her acclaimed degree show at the Glasgow School of Art. In the years since, she has played a leading role in the reinvigoration of figurative painting—a genre that she continues to test the limits of to this day. Her unique ability to create visceral portraits from thick layers of paint reveals an artist with a deep passion for the process itself, an act that she experiences as both energetic and bodily.

Bringing together fifty works made throughout the artist’s career, this exhibition traces the development of her practice from the 1990s to today, spotlighting key artworks from her career while exploring her lasting connection to art history. From charcoal drawings to large-scale oil paintings of the human form, this broadly chronological display includes works that question the conventional and historical notions of female beauty. The exhibition also highlights the monumental nudes that launched Saville to acclaim in 1992 and new ‘portraits’ made for the twenty-first century. Rendered in fluorescent, saturated tones, this pioneering series interrogates the connections between the physical and virtual in our image-saturated age.

Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting was created in close collaboration with the artist, and includes works borrowed from important public and private collections around the world. The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive publication, with texts from Emanuele Coccia, Dr Nicholas Cullinan, John Elderfield, Roxane Gay, and Karnes, and a conversation between Saville and Howgate.

“Working with these four artists in the year ahead will help us continue to expand our vision of American creativity at the Carter and beyond” said Amanda Blake, Director of Education, Library, and Visitor Experience at the Carter. “While the Carter Community Artist program evolves each year, the commitment to creativity and community impact remains. As we approach our seventh year of this initiative, one of our goals is to explore innovative projects designed to create new connections between emerging local artists and the local community. We look forward to experiencing how this new class of artists will cultivate creativity and make connections with our local community in the year ahead.”

The 2025 Carter Community Artists’ practices range across a variety of topics, media, and themes, each bringing a unique point of view to the program. Kristin Boyer’s prints, sculptures, and fiber works creatively explore ways in which communication skills are developed through play. With a specialty in portraiture, LaShonda Cooks’s work explores cultural norms, identity, and beauty through her signature pointillist painting style. Dizzy Orbit collaborates with other Fort Worth artists to create photographs that include her fiber works, her friends, and the local landscape. And as a first-generation Mexican American, Javier Sandoval’s work invites viewers to reflect on how cultural heritage and modern influences shape identity in a constantly evolving society. These artists’ unique talents, passions, and areas of focus will shape the ways we connect with our community in 2025, from lectures and workshops to student tours and art-making activities.
