More than the caffeine it provides to fuel our early mornings and late nights, coffee is a relationship stimulant. We catch up with old friends over coffee, we meet professionally over coffee, and we form new romances over coffee. Mia Moss, owner and founder of Black Coffee in East Fort Worth, understood the power of the coffee bean and wanted to bring its deliciously caffeinated magic to her community. Located in the Polytechnic Neighborhood, the award-winning coffee shop has been serving up good coffee and good culture since 2019.

What is the origin story of Black Coffee?

Black Coffee was birthed from the lack of spaces to congregate and the lack of good coffee options. In Black and Brown neighborhoods, you don’t see Starbucks or even other good coffee shops. We don’t get healthy grocery stores; we don’t get healthy food options. I love coffee and would get on the freeway to get a local cup of coffee. My family and friends encouraged me to create the space and the coffee shop. I did it, opened right before COVID, and we’re still here!

Black Coffee emphasizes an “exclusively Eastside culture.” What does that mean to you and Black Coffee patrons?

The term is “Eastside Exclusive,” and it’s based on our location and our commitment to helping grow the East Side of Fort Worth. I believe our culture is like no other, and everyone’s invited to soak it up when they visit the shop.

You went from barista to business owner. Describe that journey.

There are big gaps in between me being a barista and owning Black Coffee. My first job out of high school was at Seattle’s Best Coffee in DFW Airport. I worked there for a few years. I am an introvert, but working at the airport and serving coffee allowed me to come out of my shell. I found it easy to talk to people, and I loved making something that helped get them through their day. After that, I began working for Fort Worth ISD at an alternative school. I would travel with my husband, and we would visit local shops. I never dreamed of opening a shop, but the opportunity came, and I dove headfirst into learning the business of coffee so I could create a “third place” on the East Side for our community to utilize for meetings, hangouts, study sessions, etc.

What is your sourcing and roasting process?

I currently work with a roasting company that has access to quite a few farms across the globe. I wanted access to specific farms to create our blends. The goal was to have beans from Africa in both of our signature blends because coffee originated in Ethiopia. With the partnership we built together, I was able to create the blends myself and have them roast based on what I believed would work best to create delicious specialty drinks.

What do you love about your location near Texas Wesleyan University?

I love being close to the next generation of creators, politicians, CEOs, [and] leaders. Working at an alternative school really helped me see how important pouring into students is for them to be successful in whatever it is they intend to do with their lives. I think I have an opportunity to be part of their growth in some way by simply giving them a space away from campus to clear their minds, study, or just hang with their campus buddies. I also have an opportunity to engage with them on campus through student events. And I have two boys that can work with me and get a good glimpse of what college life is like.

When you aren’t at work, where can you be found?

I’m usually working at Yeager building on the East Side. It is the home of Franklin & Anthony (my husband’s company), DIG Contracting, and DFW Beauty Studio. It is where my family is, and they have welcomed all of us to work from this building. I also set up in other coffee shops to work because I love coffee.

If Fort Worth were a coffee, what would it be?

What a question! Fort Worth is a different coffee depending on where you are. I will say it is all of your usual suspects. A great iced oat milk latte, a really creamy cappuccino, and a strong black coffee to deal with the issues we still have to overcome as a city.

The post Worthy Convos: Mia Moss, East Side Pride, and Coffee first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

Taking place on the campus of TCU at the soundstage and editing lab of the Bob Schieffer College of Communication, the Lone Star Film Festival Summer Film Camp will host two separate camps, with the first two-week camp opening on July 10th (Session 1) and the following on July 24th (Session 2).

Photo courtesy of Lone Star Film Festival

High school-age students interested in filmmaking are welcome to register before July 1st. Participants will learn about screenwriting, directing, producing, on-camera acting, editing, and cinematography. Each of the film camp sessions will be tasked with writing, acting, producing, and editing an original short film. Each produced short film will screen at the 2023 Lone Star Film Festival in November.

“The Bob Schieffer College of Communication has been an incredible partner for our film camp,” said Lone Star Film Society Executive Director Chad Mathews. “With the success of last year’s camp at TCU, we are thrilled with the opportunity to expand as we hope to educate and inspire an even greater number of young filmmakers here in Fort Worth.”

Last year was the first year that the Lone Star Film Festival Summer Film Camp took place over two weeks and utilized the state-of-the-art facilities on campus.

“We’re excited to join our Lone Star Film Society partners in teaching high school students the art and craft of filmmaking,” said Dean Kristie Bunton. “Film camp gives young people the chance to explore how professional communicators can change the world for good with the messages they create and the audiences they reach.”

From the funnel cakes to the draft beers, the midway carnival games to the petting zoo, and the dirt filled floors of Dickies Arena to the 1,800-pound bulls that throw the riders from their backs, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo (FWSSR) leaves nothing to be desired. A night at the rodeo satisfies something for everyone in the family. Kids and adults alike leave the rodeo feeling full of awe and inspired by the animals and athletes they just watched speed across the arena on their beautiful horses. From the start of the rodeo with the National Anthem and the Grand Entry to the bull riding and barrel racing there is no possible way to go home without feeling like you were fully entertained at Dickies Arena. The FWSSR is in town until February 4th and if you haven’t made the trip out yet, find time to squeeze in a rodeo or at least a trip to the stock show.

Parking at Dickies is super easy and convenient with the garage located just to the south of the arena. Just a quick walk to the entrance to Dickies. From there, walk through the corridor and find all the traditional rodeo foods and souvenirs we all love. Beer vendors line the walkways, and you can’t forget to get your rodeo program from the Junior League “yell and sellers.” The highlight of the toys selection this year seems to be the adorable pink stuffed pigs, and you can’t miss the light-up hats and swords for the kiddos.

There are plenty of different themed nights on the schedule, but you can always count on all the traditional rodeo events we all know and love. Each rodeo features 8 events; bareback riding, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, tie down roping, barrel racing, women’s breakaway roping, team roping, and bull riding, plus the crowd favorites – chuckwagon races and mutton busting.

For a date night or a family outing, the FWSSR is the perfect way to spend a day in Fort Worth. It just doesn’t get better than a day of shopping, eating all the classic “rodeo food” they have to offer, checking out the livestock barns, riding the rides, all followed by a night of legendary Fort Worth Texas rodeo fun.

Put on your boots, fringe, turquoise, and cowboy hats, and don’t miss out on the best time of year in our city! You might even spot someone famous while you’re there. Randy Travis was spotted in the crowd at Friday night’s rodeo and featured on the jumbotron watching the crowd sing along to his hit song, “Forever and Ever, Amen.”

You only have a week left as this year’s stock show and rodeo leaves town on Saturday, February 4th, so get to it!

“We’re thrilled by the response to Dog Days and excited about the opportunity to welcome pet families to the Garden more frequently,” says Patrick Newman, FWBG CEO and president and proud owner of two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Charlie and Milo.

One fan of Dog Days excited for more opportunities to see the canines is Kate Mytchak, a TCU sophomore. She loves dogs but is unable to have one in the dorm. She and her friends try to visit the Garden on Dog Days weekends so they can catch up on the belly rubs.

“The only thing better than enjoying the beauty of the Ft Worth Botanic Garden is enjoying the gardens with dogs,” says Mytchak.

Dog Days will be held during regular Garden hours: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the winter and 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. in the summer. Regular admission is required for humans, with an additional $5 per dog. FWBG Members receive free admission and pay $5 per dog.

The schedule for winter and spring is as follows:
February 4-5
March 11-12
April 8-9
May 6-7

Theses dates are subject to change, so please check the Main Events Calendar to confirm this schedule.

To ensure the success of Dog Days and safety of all participants, the Garden asks that guests and pets adhere to specific rules and etiquette:

All dogs must be leashed, more than four months old and up to date on vaccinations.

Waste must be bagged and placed in trash receptacles. The Garden will have bags available for use.

Dogs must be socialized and well-behaved. If dogs are seen acting aggressively, Garden staff reserves the right to ask owners to leave.

We look forward to seeing you–and giving your dog lots and lots of belly rubs–soon!

I love New Years. It’s a time to plan what I want to realize in the months ahead (change my exercise routine, pay down some debt, finally finish that needlepoint tapestry that I’ve been working on for ages!). It’s also a time to look back and see what I’ve accomplished over the past year (got a kid off to college, re-read Moby Dick just to say I did, started re-learning American Sign Language).

Irving and his awe-inspiring tales are best known as some of the first works of fiction in the United States. His writings laid the foundation for some of the world’s most popular authors, including Charles Dickens, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allen Poe, and Stephen King. In perfect timing with the spooky season, Amphibian Stage will transform their Black Box theater into Irving’s eerie world, bringing the lore to life through ghostly stories and astonishing magical elements that underscore the 90-minute theatrical experience.

At the heart of The Hollow is an homage and exalting of Washington Irving’s vast and sadly forgotten influence on the literary world. Literary lovers can dive deep into this exploration of the man often cited as the father of American Fiction. This new world premiere brilliantly weaves traditional text with new imaginings creating an entry point for curious contemporary audiences.

When asked about the importance of bringing this production to North Texas audiences, Amphibian Stage Founder and Artistic Director Kathleen Culebro said, “Amphibian Stage is honored to welcome this outstanding talent to Fort Worth for the second world premiere this season! Viewers will be blown away by this reimagining of Irvin’s stories. Irving was one of the country’s first creative voices, and it’s fitting that today’s leading visionaries would choose to tell his stories. It’s a rare gift to see fiction come full circle from early 19th-century literature to the 21st-century stage. The Hollow offers creative insight into two brilliant men [Irving and Rapson] centuries apart and shows Irving’s work still has relevance today. We’re thrilled to invite North Texas audiences to experience this humorous and frightful production – closing the season on an eerie note.”

The stellar creative team includes nationally recognized actor, producer, singer, and writer Jeremy Landon Hayes. Hayes, who is directing the production, has developed work for Broadway and acted in television, film, and stage. Together with playwright John Rapson, the duo propelled Irving’s work into the 21st Century, conceiving theatrical illusions and surprises that will accentuate the storytelling and have guest questioning their own senses. This uncanny experience is made possible by NYC-based designer Caite Hevner who designed the sets and projection. Her designs have been seen on Broadway, off-Broadway, across the United States, and internationally. Joining the superb team are Tony Award-winning Costume Designer Gregg Barnes and beloved local theater professional Joel Ferrel as producer, who’s directed and choreographed extensively around the country (including FW and Dallas).

The Hollow re-acquaints us with the prolific creator of America’s earliest ghost stories; Washington Irving. Our narrator spins Irving’s tales into vivid light…only to find himself entangled in his own web of paranormal terrors. John Rapson’s new stage adaptation of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” brings horror and humor in equal measure, up close and in person in a new Halloween tradition.

Bringing together defining examples of Nevelson’s wall works, installations, and prints from across the country—many side by side for the first time—The World Outside: Louise Nevelson at Midcentury illuminates Nevelson’s multidimensional mastery of form and reaffirms the significance of her works as critical accounts of American history. The World Outside will be on view at the Carter from August 27, 2023, through January 7, 2024, before traveling to Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, ME.

The World Outside offers the first in-depth study of the artistic, economic, and political forces behind Nevelson’s multifaceted innovations. Working against repressive gender norms and a culture of mass consumption, Nevelson subverted the era’s obsession with domesticity and industrial production by championing hands-on techniques and repurposed materials. Investigating over 50 key sculptures and works on paper, the exhibition reveals how Nevelson’s encounters with “the world outside” fueled her imagination and ingenuity—from the Colonial Revival and the “discovery” of American folk art in the first half of the twentieth century; to muralism and Mayan iconography in her travels through Mexico and Guatemala; to New York’s modern dance scene; to Los Angeles’ print-art revolution; to media coverage of environmental crises and the Space Race. Among the landmark works featured are:

Lunar Landscape(1955-59), a major highlight from the Carter’s collection, tapping into postwar fascinations with visions of space through allusions to the moon’s cratered surface;

Royal Tide I(1960), Nevelson’s first gold work, negotiating the ethereal, earthly, and social symbolism of the precious metal in relation to midcentury materialism;

Rain Forest Wall(1967), a monumental work unveiled in Nevelson’s 1967 retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art, which will be on view in the United States for the first time in over fifty years;

Transparent Sculpture I(1967-68), one of the artist’s earliest works created entirely from Plexiglas, challenging perceptions of the boundaries between two-, three-, and four-dimensional forms; and over 20 prints produced by Nevelson at Atelier 17 and at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop in Los Angeles during her 1963 and 1967 fellowships, including her mammoth 56 x 34-inch piece, Untitled [I] (1967), exploring interplays of surface and depth.

Walker, Executive Director at the Carter. “The new scholarship presented in the exhibition is a timely reminder of the crucial role artists serve as witnesses to history; the nuanced stories still to be discovered within seemingly familiar works; and—as underscored by Jean Shin’s and Tara Donovan’s catalogue reflections—the ways that any single voice can echo through generations to follow.”

Rather than a chronological presentation of Nevelson’s artwork, The World Outside features five thematic sections that provide new insights into the artist’s practice dating from the late 1930s to the early 1970s. These include:

The Choreographer: Highlighting the artist’s twenty-year journey as a dancer, from her time as a student to a mature practitioner of eurythmics, the exhibition’s first section connects Nevelson’s early drawings of bodily movement with her well-known wall works, created through spontaneous assemblage methods. As she remarked, “Dancing frees your mind and opens it to sculptural possibilities.”

The Visionary: This section explores Nevelson’s blending of the mystical and the real through her use of found materials and lunar themes, just as media coverage of the Space Race and the first orbiting satellites tantalized the American imagination. The works featured here crystalize Nevelson’s efforts to take the recognizable and transform it in ways that evoked “something beyond,” as she described it, to awaken viewers’ planetary consciousness.

The Community Builder: Nevelson was one of the first American artists to imbue abstract sculpture with illusionism and to build large-scale environmental installations. “The Community Builder” investigates the ways Nevelson’s wall works and columnar sculptures dissolve boundaries, inviting viewers to participate in the shared spaces that they create. The works in this section primarily derive from Nevelson’s landmark installationDawn’s Wedding Feast, which debuted in 1959 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The Printmaker: Drawing from the Carter’s extensive Tamarind Lithography Workshop Collection, this section charts how Nevelson created alternative modes of viewing in her prints through unconventional printmaking methods. The works featured here showcase Nevelson’s experiments with color, material, and texture that led to aesthetic breakthroughs in her monochromatic sculptures, as she moved seamlessly between two and three dimensions.

The Environmentalist: Spotlighting Nevelson’s attunement to the transformation of America’s wartime austerity into a culture of mass consumption, this section examines the materials, processes, and themes through which the artist responded to growing ecological vulnerabilities. The works featured here allude to sources of inspiration in the natural world and reveal previously unexplored connections between Nevelson’s art and the ecology movement.

“Challenging perceptions that Nevelson falls among the tide of abstract expressionists working in the postwar period, The World Outside invites visitors to rediscover the artist’s iconic sculptures as fusions of diverse media, histories, and ideas that uniquely capture the vitality of their moment,” said Shirley Reece-Hughes, Curator of Paintings, Sculpture, and Works on Paper at the Carter. “With fresh insight on Nevelson’s prescient vocabulary—from her rejection of gendered hierarchies to her environmental consciousnesses to her experimentation with raw materials—we hope the exhibition gives scholars and art lovers alike a new appreciation for the artist’s endless creativity and legacy as a forecaster for the art world.”

In 1958, a lanky kid from East Texas went to Moscow and did the unimaginable. Van Cliburn, just 23 at the time, won the first International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, an event designed to demonstrate Soviet superiority during the height of the Cold War. Four years later, the inaugural Van Cliburn Piano Competition was held in Fort Worth, in honor of Mr. Cliburn. The quadrennial competition is recognized as one of the world’s most prestigious music contests.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-4384" class="size-full wp-image-4384" src="http://tanglewoodmoms.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Dominic-Piers-Smith.jpg" alt="Dominic Piers Smith, a team leader in aerodynamics for Mercedes Formula One team from the United Kingdom, competes in the final round of the Sixth International Piano Competition for Outstanding Amateurs hosted by the Van Cliburn Foundation in Fort Worth, Texas, Sunday, May 29, 2011. (Van Cliburn Foundation/Rodger Mallison)

In 1999, the Cliburn launched the first Amateur Competition in an effort “to celebrate the importance of making music even for those who don’t make it a career.” Every four years, outstanding nonprofessional pianists ages 35 and older from around the world and from all professions gather in Fort Worth to compete.
This year’s 69 competitors are from 19 countries, including the United States. They represent an incredible range of professions. Doctors, professors, nonprofit directors, engineers, homemakers; they all share a passion for music. DFW-area competitors include a doctor at Baylor Surgical Hospital at Las Colinas, a cell biologist at UT Southwestern Medical Center, a technology executive from Murphy and a retired database programmer from Fort Worth who was the second-place finisher from the last competition.

The Amateur Competition consists of four rounds from Sunday, June 19 to Saturday, June 25. Children 8 and older are welcome. (What a great way to introduce your children to music or inspire a child who may not be overly excited about his piano lessons!) Tickets for the Preliminary, Quarterfinal, and Semifinal Rounds are general admission at Van Cliburn Recital Hall and range from $10 for the Preliminary Round to $20 for the Semifinal Round.

On Saturday, June 25, at 3 p.m., the Final Round and Awards Ceremony will be held at Bass Hall. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra will accompany the six finalists with special guest conductor Damon Gupton. Fans of Empire and Bates Motel will recognize Gupton; not only is he an actor, he is a noted conductor.
Reserved tickets for the Final Round range from $10 to $60. The Cliburn is pleased to announce that we are offering the readers of TanglewoodMoms.com a special promotion code. Enter the promo code TANGLEWOOD for $15 orchestra-level seats for the Final Round and the Award Ceremony.

We at TanglewoodMoms.com are pleased to give a big Lone Star State welcome to the newest women’s organization in North Texas, the Dallas Wings WNBA team. This 2016-2017 season will the be the first for the ladies in their new home south of the Red River, and we are so excited to have them here.

The WNBA is known for exciting, competitive games with highly skilled players at a really great price point. Thanks to their move to DFW, that is exactly what the Dallas Wings will be sharing with all of us this basketball season. With an impressive roster of players and an inclusion at the playoffs last year as the Tulsa Shock, the newly renamed ladies of the Dallas Wings are excited to get this season going and finish what they started in 2015.

For a few of their players, this move to the College Park Center on UTA’s campus is in many ways a “coming home”. Odyssey Sims (native of Irving, MacArthur HS/Baylor grad), Plenette Pierson (native of Houston, Kingwood HS/Texas Tech grad), and Tiffany Jackson-Jones (native of Duncanville, Univ. of Texas grad) are all Texas girls – more than likely you’ve seen them play a game either for or against one of your favorite college teams. They along with Skylar Diggins, Glory Johnson, and the rest of the Dallas Wings players are excited to be on Texas soil and make their team a force to be reckoned with on the court.

With very affordable ticket and membership prices, we hope to see many of you enjoying the games with your families or on a night out with the girls soon! Their first home game of the 2016 season is on May 21, and tickets are still available. Here is a link to their 2016 schedule.

Kristen McDonald is a Texas girl who earned a Communications degree from Baylor, then fell in love and married a fighter pilot. Air Force duty called, and she and her new husband moved from their beloved Texas, and together they saw the world. In 11 years of marriage, she has moved 7 times across the U.S. and Europe, adopted a son, and begun her greatest adventure – motherhood. Kristen is thrilled to finally be back home in Texas for good. She is at her happiest in a good pair of jeans, with dinner cooking on the stove, music cranked loud, and a Gin and Tonic in her hand.

The post Tanglewood Moms Welcomes the Wings! first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.
