Fall is a magical time at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, and this year it’s more enchanting than ever! Starting Oct. 1, we invite you to immerse yourself in the tranquility and artistry of Koedama Forest by Nomad Studio. This miniature sculptural woodland is made up of more than 1,200 handcrafted kokedamas nested within an intricate metal framework. Kokedama, a centuries-old Japanese form of bonsai, transforms spheres of moss, twine, and seedlings into stunning organic artworks.

Spanning just 1,000 square feet in the Garden, Kokedama Forest will artfully display each kokedama ball in an intricate metal network within a tranquil micro-forest. Guests are encouraged to wander through this enchanting space, surrounded by levitating kokedamas that beautifully showcase the intimate relationship between soil and plants.

With Kokedama Forest, William E. Roberts and Laura Santín, founding partners of Nomad Studio, present a poetic materialization of the intimate relationship between soil and plants, an inspiring blend of nature and art. This beautiful display is also an important reminder that soil is one of the key habitats of the planet which is too often undervalued despite being indispensable.

Twenty-one “living” sculptures by the late Seward Johnson are strategically placed around the Garden, blending in with their surroundings and delighting Garden visitors. Created with a staggering attention to detail and a deliberate attempt to fool the eye, these sculptures depict people engaged in day-to-day activities. Also included in the exhibit are some of Johnson’s works that are based on works of art and famous people.

Born in 1930, John Seward Johnson II was the grandson of one of the founders of Johnson & Johnson. Exposed to art and artists throughout his early life (his family was friends with Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz), Johnson attended the Forman School, a school for children with learning differences. (During his tenure there, Albert Einstein was an academic advisor.)

Johnson’s sculptures are found in private collections and public spaces around the world. One sculpture, Double Check (1982), depicting a businessman rifling through his briefcase, became famous after surviving the September 11 terrorist attacks.

As his interest in sculpture grew, Johnson realized that he was in a unique position – he could use his family’s money to help other sculptors. The Johnson Atelier Technical Institute of Sculpture, founded in 1974, became an incubator for sculpture, nurturing artists as they created new and exciting works and advanced artistic technologies. (Many of these advances were used to create the works on display in the Botanic Garden.) While the Institute no longer offers educational and technical programs, the Atelier seeks “to integrate sculpture into the fabric of everyday life and promote the appreciation of sculpture and public art…”

Johnson’s sculptures are both familiar and foreign; they depict the mundane and the famous. From a family enjoying a picnic, as many of us do on a lovely spring day in the Garden, to the Mona Lisa, these sculptures are unexpected in the best way.

“Mr. Johnson’s unique sculptures exist in an exciting place between realism and fantasy,” said Patrick Newman, President and CEO at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden. “Guests will find themselves taking a second look each time they encounter these lifelike art displays.”

According to Dena Lewis, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden’s Public Relations Manager, witnessing people’s interactions with the sculptures has been a delight. “There’s one of a family swinging their child [Can We Dance Here, Mommy, 2018] that has people stopping to see if they are real people. Another is of a dad with a little girl on his shoulders (Hats Off, 2022], and it really has people doing double takes!”

Don’t miss out on Seward Johnson: Sculptures in the Garden, a unique exhibit running only until September 1. Pro tip: Be sure to bring your camera! After all, how many people can say that they got to take a selfie with the Mona Lisa?

Hosted in cooperation with the Fort Worth Japanese Society, the festival includes cultural demonstrations, performances, unique shopping opportunities, and traditional foods. According to the Japanese zodiac, 2024 is the year of the wood dragon. Like spring, the symbolism of wood represents a time of renewal, change, and rebirth.

During the festival, visitors will have the chance to witness captivating cultural demonstrations that showcase the wonder and intricacy of Japanese traditions. From mesmerizing tea ceremonies to awe-inspiring martial arts performances, attendees will be treated to a diverse range of experiences that celebrate the essence of Japanese heritage. A special musical addition this year is the Cherry Blossom Children’s Choir, a group of students from the Japanese School of Dallas who perform songs in both Japanese and English.

No festival is complete without indulging in delicious cuisine, and the Spring Japanese Festival is no exception. Attendees will have the opportunity to savor authentic Japanese dishes, prepared by skilled members of the Fort Worth Japanese Society, as well as an array of offering from Asian-themed food trucks.

We’re not kidding …  goats are coming to the Fort Worth Botanic Garden!

With generous support from the Anita Berry Martin Memorial Fund at North Texas Community Foundation, FWBG will be hosting a small herd of goats, April 5-15, to help us clean up the invasive plant species in our Native Texas Boardwalk area. The goats will be visible for guests during regular Garden hours and monitored by a herder 24/7.

Frequently referred to as “goatscaping,” goat herd grazing is a management strategy already practiced by nature centers, airports, ranches, and private residences in Texas and other states. Research shows positive impacts of goat grazing, including decreased fire fuels, increased species diversity, and soil enriched by goat waste. The benefits of selectively allowing goats to graze on our site should include fewer manhours devoted to manual and mechanical invasive species removal and reduced or eliminated use of motorized and heavy equipment operations, thereby reducing emissions, and providing a quieter, more positive experience for FWBG guests.

Historically, natural processes such as fires, flooding, and grazing maintain the ecological balance of native Texas environments. And while FWBG is home to natural wildlife, grazing animals are not a part of our ecosystem. The Garden’s goal in using a borrowed band of browsing goats is to fill this gap and help tip the management scales back in our favor.

The goats will also provide a research opportunity for our scientists from the Botanic Research Institute of Texas (BRIT). With the help of an undergraduate student intern, the Horticulture and Research teams will collect data during this pilot project to determine whether goat grazing is a viable option for long-term management at the Garden. Those research plans and any eventual findings will be shared in the future. To visit the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, purchase tickets at fwbg.org.
Starting Jan. 26, you can see Dinosaurs Around the World: The Great Outdoors, an epic exhibit that brings dinosaurs to life in an outdoor environment. Created in collaboration with Dr. Gregory M. Erickson, a world-renowned dinosaur paleontologist, and Imagine Exhibitions, a leading producer of immersive experiences, Dinosaurs Around the World will take guests on a one-of-a-kind adventure using advanced animatronic dinosaurs from every continent, a multi-layered narrative, and cutting-edge research that features new and exciting facts.

Discover the mighty T. rex of North America, the bi-pedal predator Herrerasaurus, one of the first dinosaurs to appear on Earth, and the bizarre, bony-crested Oviraptor from Mongolia, among others. You will also learn about the supercontinent of Pangea and how geological forces allowed dinosaurs to spread to all corners of the globe.
