The festival will celebrate its 14th year in DFW and a 1st for Fort Worth on Saturday, March 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fort Worth African American Roots Music Festival

The Fort Worth African American Roots Music Festival (FWAAMFest) was created to highlight an often forgotten and neglected piece of history: the central role of blackness in American roots music. FWAAMFest aims to broaden the local arts scene and place Fort Worth on the map as a place to go for traditional music lovers, and a site where community members can engage in Black reclamation of this history. It is the only major city festival of its kind that is both Black-led and centered around Black artists.

The Fort Worth Food + Wine Festival is North Texas’ most celebrated cuisine and beverage festival, taking place over four days and nights in venues around our thriving culinary community. The festival’s growing roster of talented chefs and food artisans, as well as craft brewers and distinctive vintners, bring a range of tastes, styles and methods that reflect the diversity of the city itself. But it’s more than good food and good fun – it’s a good cause. That’s because proceeds from the festival go to the Fort Worth Food + Wine Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises funds for local grant programs and culinary scholarships. To date, the Foundation raised $325,000 for grants and scholarships supporting deserving culinary students from Fort Worth.

Celebrate Pi Day with Pizza

First, you’ll create a simple, no-knead pizza dough. Then, with dough from that same recipe that has already proofed for 18 hours, you’ll form your pizzas; top them with local ingredients selected from a variety of cheeses, sausages, fruits, and vegetables; and discover how to create a crispy crust. While your pizzas are in the oven, you’ll craft a homemade vinaigrette for a terrific salad.

Learn the long-held Ukrainian tradition of pysanky, colorful eggs created by applying beeswax to the surface of an egg in carefully choreographed layers. As part of our local celebration of Butterflies in the Garden, you can learn some of the techniques for producing pysanky just in time for Easter.

Gretta Hendricks is a multidisciplinary creative who has been a chocolatier, baker, birth-doula, performance artist, and freelance writer, although her favorite job to-date has been becoming a first-time mama to her beautiful rainbow baby, Ofelia, born in January of 2020. Gretta has enjoyed writing for as long as she can remember and is passionately interested in the ways she can both learn and share from the art of storytelling. Alongside her husband and daughter, she loves living in and exploring Fort Worth as well as pouring into her church and local community.

Fort Worth ISD’s Spring Break runs from March 9 through March 13. If you’re like me, the idea of children either glued to screens all day or running amok through the house will chill you to the bone. However, there are some great Spring Break camps that are fun and educational. Just don’t tell the kids they’re actually learning something!

• The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History has several events opening just in time for Spring Break. Adventures with Clifford the Big Red Dog opens on March 4, and Dinosaurs of Antarctica opens at the Omni on March 7.
• The Kimbell’s Spring Break Art Extravaganza features sketching expeditions through the museum, creative improv, and afternoon yoga.
• The Amon Carter hosts Spring Break at the Carter where you and your child can see how nature and art play together with art projects, storytelling, and more.
• The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame is having a Spring Break Scavenger Hunt! Learn about the Wild West as you hunt throughout the museum, and then continue the hunt at the BRIT, the Sid Richardson, the Amon Carter, and more.
• Spring Break Camp at the Fort Worth Zoo is wild! Campers will learn about all sorts of animals through daily Zoo hikes and classroom animal visits while having a great time.

St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Tuesday this year, but Cowtown Goes Green on Saturday, March 14, at the Stockyards. From poetry and pony rides and the parade to armadillo races and Irish dancing and more, this is Fort Worth’s biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration. So get your green on and get down to the Stockyards!

One of Fort Worth’s favorite spring activities, Butterflies in the Garden, is back! After being damaged in a hailstorm, the Conservatory at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden has been beautifully redone, and there are more butterflies than ever. This is a ticketed event, so get your tickets here!

Roald Dahl was one of the best children’s authors in the history of children’s authors. His books are classics and have been turned into movies and stage productions. From March 20 through April 5, Casa Mañana presents the Broadway smash Matilda: The Musical.  On Saturdays, you can join Matilda and Miss Honey for tea in the Reid Cabaret. March in Fort Worth, while typically windy, is lovely, so get out there and enjoy! Picnic in the park, bike along Trinity Trails, fossil hunt along the river, or just play in the backyard. We wish you a very happy March, and we can’t wait to hear about your adventures!
