When Frenchye Harris entered the fashion industry, there weren’t many people who looked like her at the table. There weren’t many models who looked like her. And there certainly wasn’t a showcase for designers who looked like her. Harris met that challenge during the past year by creating the Black Fashion Movement. June 17-20, Galleria Dallas will host the Black Fashion Movement and over a dozen amazing designers representing the BIPOC community for a stylish pop-up experience where shoppers across North Texas can come together to see the works of some of the country’s most up and coming designers.

The Black Fashion Movement launched in February 2020 as a grassroots social media campaign to celebrate, promote and support black-owned fashion brands during Black History Month. The movement took root and evolved. The Black Fashion Movement is now a community of fashion designers, entrepreneurs, stylists, fashion industry executives and fashion enthusiasts that share the vision of normalizing buying and incorporating Black-owned fashion brands into our everyday wardrobes.

While Harris began by hosting monthly roundtables to educate, connect and celebrate the industry and audience. But she realized that there was space for more. The Black Fashion Movement pop up experience at Galleria Dallas is designed to be the first of a series of luxury shopping experiences created to connect emerging Black designers with trend-conscious shoppers in a unique retail encounter.

“The unavailability of Black-owned brands and products that serve the African American community is profoundly impacting the African-American path to purchase”, noted Harris. “Creating in-store opportunities for Black customers to touch, feel and try new products while shopping could be essential to building long term loyalty.”

Black Fashion Movement has brought together some of the most exciting Black-owned brands from markets across the country. Designers traveling to North Texas for the Galleria Dallas pop up experience include:

Local influencer Tony Green, The Near Southside’s “Ambassador of Happiness,” is celebrating Black History Month with a Lottie Mae Lounge gallery pop-up at Kent & Co Magnolia Wine Bar, featuring the work of Fort Worth artists Charles Gray, Donnie Williams, Christopher Knowles and Teacoa Rushton.

The paintings of Charles Gray are personal meditations – on family, slavery, and the female perspective. Gray balances weighty themes with a stylistic exuberance that encourages relaxed and engaging conversations with each piece. Photographer Donnie Williams’ raw black and white images capture the essence of Fort Worth and its diverse communities. Williams, who shoots in film and is one of the city’s more prolific artists, has an extensive Instagram following and a series of highly regarded self-published zines through Deep Red Press. Christopher Knowles’ truly dynamic photographs also celebrate every day subject matter, while capturing the avant-garde elements of our surroundings. And Jewelry maker Teacoa Rushton’s creations are exquisite works of art. Rushton, who specializes in bead weaving, finds inspiration in photography, jazz and the contemplative properties of the materials he utilizes in his work.

We have March Madness for NCAA college basketball, St. Patrick’s Day, the first day of spring, Women’s History Month, and of course, the much anticipated (by her) Finley Lorraine Kieta’s 11th birthday! Perhaps the last one is a bigger deal to the Kieta family. Nonetheless, we have a lot to look forward to this month in The Fort!

One of the women making her mark in Women’s History is our very own Mayor Betsy Price! March 2nd is Mayor Price’s Town Hall Kick-off in the Sundance Square Plaza in downtown Fort Worth. It all starts with a family-friendly bike ride throughout downtown or choose to go on a walking tour. Afterwards, there will be a town hall forum where you can learn the latest city happenings from the Mayor in a laid-back setting. For more information on the event, visit: https://www.facebook.com/events/2621769201197286/

The weekend of March 9th and 10th, there will be a couple of shopping events worthy of your presence. March 9th is the St. Patty’s Sip & Shop at the Stockyard Stations!

Over the past five years, screen-obsessed cultures have seen a return to the novel interactions provided by board games, and there are those who have believe we are experiencing the Golden Age of Board Games.

In 2016, five thousand new game titles were introduced into the market as they became a multi-billion-dollar industry. With clearly-stated rules and goals, these games are built around a framework for face-to-face interactions, common activity, and play that transports gamers away from social media where anonymity can so quickly become toxic. No matter what problem-solving endeavor is at the heart of a game, those puzzles represent great shared narratives.

For over a year, former roommates Corey Goodwin and Brad Davis, along with Brad’s wife Ashley, have been organizing board game pop ups at places like Collective Brewing and Hopfusion in Fort Worth’s Near Southside under the auspices of Friend & Foe. Event Coordinator and Marketing Director Corey Goodwin explains, “None of us have started a business before, so it has been a fun learning experience. Our motto is ‘Come as friends, play as foes.’”

The range of game types spans more than fifty, from hardcore strategy to random chance and beyond. Games like Settlers of Catan and Pandemic are built around players working together to solve complex problems. Whether building decks of cards while trading them and developing one’s negotiation skills, deciding if your group is bold enough to play Cards Against Humanity in public, or fearlessly attempting a dangerous Jenga move while standing on one foot, all of these games offer players fine opportunities to surprise one another. Friend & Foe has been building a following with their local partnerships and are currently searching for a location for their own board game café. With larger tables, players will be encouraged to enjoy their games; the focus will be less on tournaments and more on providing the best environment for those who play.

With a few questions, Goodwin and his partners can help customers choose from the ever-growing collection of games based on their experience, desires, and group size. And for five bucks, players can try out a few different titles or hunker down with an old favorite. In addition to these pop ups, Friend & Foe also work with businesses using games for team building, where, as Goodwin says, “the problem solving required allows colleagues to engage different roles and showcase different abilities outside of the work context.” Likewise, they have organized networking events as part of Ensemble Co-Working’s 1 Million Cups. Board game cafés return participants to the now-novel process of interpersonal communication with curated solutions that combat the isolation technology has left many people feeling. “In many of these games, building and developing relationships are a consequence of gameplay.” Studies have shown significantly-increased brain speeds in elementary school students who regularly play board games, while at the other end of life, board game enthusiasts have shown major reduction in their chances of Alzheimer’s, as well as an increase in memory retention.

New European-influenced games have fewer rules and more variability, allowing the imagination to play a major role; they also focus on teamwork and community, rather than conflict and luck, known also as “Co-operative” games. Perfect for bonding over an analog experience, the board game café offers a more inclusive environment than images from previous gaming eras. These changes can have lasting benefits, as groups become more united rather than more divided which was often a byproduct with older games.

With their vast collection of games, including fabulous titles like Resurgence and SuperBattle, Friend & Foe continues next Thursday, May 17th, at HopFusion and Sunday, May 20th, at Collective Brewing. Corey Goodwin tells me they are looking for partner charities; they will soon have an operational website offering corporate events and a Rent-a-Guru program to teach games in homes — like a therapist and camp counselor all wound up into one.

If you’ve been following my blog posts and Instagram account you will know two things by now.

I love entrepreneurs

I love TCU

When I caught wind that two recent TCU grads were opening up a new high-end store, Pax & Parker in West Bend, I HAD to find out more. Winston Parker Ley, a graduate of the TCU Neeley School of Business, and Alari Paxson with a fashion merchandising degree from TCU were also buyers together at a luxury women’s store in San Antonio. They chose Fort Worth to start their entrepreneurial journey and to create long lasting relationships with members of our community. I for one WELCOME these two and their new store and am THRILLED to announce that I will be hosting their first pop-up ever in gorgeous La Cantera! While they are still customizing their 1364-square-foot space, they already have all of their fall lines in and ready to share with you.
My fashion loving heart can hardly take it. I can’t wait to see everything right along with you. Winston also mentioned there will be gifts with purchase for some of the collections. {insertfistbumpemoji}

But of course I can’t just stop here. I had to include everything you could possibly want out of a shopping haul so I invited a few of my awesome business minded friends to join in on the fun.

Bree Linne, Lifestyle Photographer (also a TCU grad) will be shooting a Christmas mini session at an adjacent property. Please call her to book a time slot. Her phone number is included on the invitation below. She is shooting my family this Saturday, and has also shot for this blog here and here. She’s fabulous with kids and she has some exciting back drops planned that are holiday themed.

Laura Meyn, author of Meatless in Cowtown, contributing writer to 360 West, and this awesome blog post will be signing copies of her vegetarian cookbook. I think this is the perfect gift to give a mom or friend that loves to cook or is looking for fresh recipes to serve the family. Laura is a gem and I’m so excited she will be there for you to meet and answer any epicurean questions you may have.

What’s an open house without some home decor to feast your eyes on? I’ve been social media stalking Chrissi Shields with Styled Chaos and have fallen madly in love with her interiors. She is not afraid to mix styles, colors, patterns and textures in her spaces and that makes my heart happy in so many ways. I can almost picture my future home without crayons and paint on the walls. {insertseenoevilemoji} I don’t want to sound creepy about all the stalking, I have also been emailing and texting with Chrissi about some projects in my home and decided that this pop-up would be the perfect venue to introduce you to her work. Visit her website and get in line to book her services.

Toy Works is a family run business since 1983 located in Village of Camp Bowie shopping center. Nancy Hay, shop owner, will be set up at this event with boutique lines of children’s toys and books such as Brio Trains, Corolle Dolls, Rifle Paper Co Books, and Hape wooden toys. I met Nancy recently and she shared with me that they offer complimentary gift wrapping and assembly and they are proud of their huge book department. In fact, her sister publishes a book blog every week on their website, toyworksstore.com; she offers suggestions on lessons you can teach and activities based on the books.

Jill Hall, artist behind The Rustic Thistle shop on Etsy, and another TCU grad will be on hand with her collection of stationery and art. How precious are these notecards? I’ve been peeking around her Etsy shop and Facebook page and she personalizes the stationery as well. I am a huge paper fan, two of my first jobs were working at two stationery stores, and I’m certain that her work is unique and not like all of the repetitive trends you find at Target. I love supporting local and most of all “mompreneurs”. If you can’t make the show, please find something on her Etsy store. But I KNOW you’re coming to the show, so it won’t be a problem.

So here’s the deal. You’re a busy mom. I’m a busy mom. I feel you. Sister, I feel you in ways that only a mom with 4 kids and major mommy guilt can when thinking about going to spend time for herself. So I am removing ALL sense of guilt because ladies, we will have kid friendly activities in the backyard. Say what?? Yes, you heard me K-I-D friendly art projects led by Christie Neal who is no stranger to kids or art or teaching kids art. She has volunteered at Cook Children’s Hospital and also gives private art lessons to students in her home studio. Side note, my mom is an artist, my mother-in-law is an artist, and my daughter who can spend hours on end with crayons in hand all exemplify the joy it is to use your talents to create art. Come and meet Christie and she’ll share with you how she hopes to inspire your children.

Full disclosure I am a doughnut fan. But not just any doughnut. Really really good ones that are worth the calories, Hostess be damned. Doughboy Donuts has been popping up all over town at different venues and you can find them at Stir Crazy Baked Goods. Melvin the owner mentioned that they are in process of getting a food truck. I think we are all on the same page that this is a very very good idea. The picture below has me envisioning taking a bite out of each one before settling on my favorite. Come to the show to support another small business, we can take bites together. #doughnutbesties

You know what’s crazy? Only having known someone through Facebook but having a huge and utmost respect for them based on what they post and share. That sums up my relationship with Sharon Jackson. Her husband is a track coach at TCU and she’s been a member of Tanglewood Moms since we started the group and has been an inspiration for moms throughout our community. She inspires us to live healthfully, exercise frequently, and even when life brings us challenging moments to keep our chin up and know tomorrow will be a better day. Come meet Sharon if you need a fitness plan now or know you will after the holidays!

An lastly Briley Studdard with Oh Deery Floral. She is a kind hearted soul with an immense talent for floral decoration. I met Briley through Katherine Sasser of Hurley House at one of our #GIRLBOSS dinners and I’ve been following her on Instagram ever since. She works with brides to capture their special moments, but also offers arrangements for any of your personal or event needs. Fresh flowers are a simple luxury, but so necessary in our hectic and sometimes messy lives. Flowers remind us of the beauty in the world and when we receive them as a gift (hint hint Billy Bob Wise) we feel special beyond comparison.

Have I convinced you that you MUST come to our Pop Up and Open House? I hope so.

It’s Wednesday, October 21st from 1-5pm at 5216 Sendero, Fort Worth, Texas. The event is at a home within the La Cantera gated community listed by John Zimmerman of Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty.

Rachel Leos and Cassie Bryant are two moms out of Dallas that are seeking to bring small trendy brands to the DFW area through their pop up shop Ollie & Mave. As moms they have delighted in buying from and supporting small (in more way than one, wink-wink) brands all over the world for their kids wardrobes. They want to bring that delight to moms in their city who aren’t aware of the incredible design and quality that is out there for kids.

Early this year Rachel and Cassie were discussing how most of the shopping they have to do is online because of the void in diverse children’s fashion here in the metroplex. It’s difficult to buy clothes online when you can’t see and touch the quality, not to mention the difference in sizing across the globe. That afternoon they decided to chase a little dream and to curate these brands, bringing them to our cities for the sake of all young moms who think kids fashion is pretty cool. So in an effort to keep their full time jobs that they love and to stay present in the life of their families, they decided to start a pop up project named after their kids Ollie Leos and Maven Bryant.

The concept for Ollie & Mave is to curate a collection of designers lines for the current season and pop up in Ft Worth and in Dallas to make those brands available for moms to shop in person rather than online. The goal is to provide a one day shopping environment that is accessible for moms and hospitable to their children. As a mom, you can show up to one of their events and pretty much knock out buying that seasons wardrobe for your kids in one day. This Fall is their first season to pop up and you have the opportunity to support small business and small brands by checking it out and enjoying their creative eye for styling kids.

So, SAVE THE DATE, October 24th. Ollie & Mave will be popping up at Melt Ice Creams here in Fort Worth with their Fall/Winter collection of brands. The first 100 customers get a free scoop of ice cream! They have a great giveaway on their Instagram that you can still get in on! So follow them for updates on Facebook or on Instagram @ollieandmave.
