My favorite plant shop in Fort Worth with all the cool vibes is Stayin’ Alive Succulents. A former self-proclaimed “black thumb,” Jayme learned to care for succulents and found joy in sharing her knowledge with others. For beautiful arrangements in cute, quirky, modern planters, you can shop online or in her location in The Market at Ridglea. A few of my favorite planters include the tiny typewriters, the skate shoe, and the llama. Of course, you can’t go wrong with the disco ball or macrame with bling. Whether for at home or for the office, these adorable succulents make great gifts.

That sentiment could not be truer for me over the past couple of years. Struggling through a life story that I never would have chosen left me trying to remember who I really was. I have always been a creative person: an entrepreneur and a collaborator. I have had many opportunities to foster those skills through event planning, styling, fashion design, and wholesale manufacturing. I was confident in the gifts God gave me.

When life pulls the rug out from under you, the blessing is that you get a big set of blank pages to write your next chapter in your life’s journey. Now more than ever, my heart beats fastest when I am engaged it those who are turning brokenness into beauty. Really, only God can do that, but the fact that he would use me in any capacity to participate in the restoration of people’s stories definitely gets me to the place where I feel most like myself.

I traveled to Ethiopia several years back with a non-profit, the Adera Foundation, and was captured by the women they serve. The foundation does so many amazing things to impact families, and I got involved in a work programs where they make jewelry – some out of recycled TCU football programs and Kimbell Art paper – that we sell in the US. The money goes back to the women who use it to support their families. There is beauty in broken.

About a year ago, I met with the team at The Net here in Fort Worth with a desire to create a work program for the women they serve who have been exploited in the sex industry. We started a successful program, and the women are undergoing training and obtaining a work history while experiencing creativity and community, sometimes for the first time in their lives. There is so much beauty in broken.

When life pulled the rug out from under me, I started the journey of finding the beauty in my own broken story. After 20 years of marriage, I was faced with rebuilding my life and redefining myself while raising my children. There was always hope that God would redeem my marriage, and there is still grief that it didn’t happen that way. But even though my circumstances were out of my control, God was in control. Now I am walking alongside other women who are in similar situations and being the mouthpiece for the broken stories of the women we serve in our partnership organizations through the store. The broken can be breathtakingly beautiful.

Not long ago, some friends purchased the building that will soon be the new 4 Eleven on South Main here in Fort Worth, I was invited to consult due to my event planning background. This lead to an invitation to be a partner in the venue. The 4 Eleven is the first mixed-use restaurant and retail space launching in this historic part of the city. The vision and heart of the 4 Eleven team is not only to restore this amazing building (it was destined to become a parking lot!) but to serve as a restoration inspiration for our city. Since 1983, the Hay family have dedicated themselves to keeping that magic alive in just such a place, and it’s right here in Fort Worth. I remember going to Toy Works on occasion as a kid, but despite having children of my own now, we have not taken them there. Yet.

When I first walked into Toy Works at 6333 Camp Bowie the other day to meet with the owner, I was all business. Inside of 30 seconds, I had a huge smile on my face. I was blown away by all of the amazing toys, books, and games they have. It immediately brought back memories of carefree childhood fun, and I quickly became lost in my imagination. What a fantastic place! Apparently, I’m not the only one who feels this way either. Toy Works has won multiple Best Toy Store awards from Fort Worth TX Magazine, Fort Worth Weekly, Dallas A List, and the local CBS affiliate.

As with hobby shops and candy stores, specialty toy stores seem to be a dying breed. Sadly, for the most part, they are echoes of our collective childhood memories. It is so refreshing to me that this place exists right here in our fair burg and that it is thriving. There has been a growing groundswell across the entire nation to support local businesses, and we at Tanglewood Moms shout that message from the rooftops. We believe small business owners are a huge part of what makes our city great, and we encourage all of our friends and neighbors to support them in every way possible.

We are so happy our fellow Fort Worthians have been supporting this business for so long and continue to do so. As I sit here typing a gift guide for you all, I’ve yet to purchase anything for the amazing dads in my life!  I need a gift for my dad who has everything and one for my amazing husband! In creating this article, I hope to come up with the perfect unique idea of a gift for them as well.  Here are some man categories that can narrow down our options.

The Sports Lover

These types are usually pretty easy to buy for.  You could find a vintage sports magazine with an article on one of his favorite players of all time!  Here’s a link to a “Sports Illustrated” from 1972 with a Dallas Cowboy cover story.   Another option is an autographed ball or sports memorabilia of some sort. They can take you on a full-day moose photo safari in Maine, skydiving near Corpus Christie, or fishing in Cabo!  Shooting classes are available as well.  There are so many choices, and they haven’t forgotten anyone.  Gear is also available in the store. (They even have Yeti Tumblers, and I know how much Tanglewood Moms love to give those!!!) The Animal Lover

When I was 17, I brought home a half golden retriever and half yellow lab puppy.  We named her Pavlov, and when I left for college, she became my Dad’s dog.  He loved to put her in the front seat of his Ford Bronco and take her everywhere. She died many years ago from cancer, but her memory lives on. The perfect gift for my dad would be a way to remember his beloved Pavvy, and there is a local artist here in Fort Worth that will take a photo of her and create a beautiful watercolor image.  Her name is Angela Gilmore-Lendzioszek.  She has an Etsy website you can order from, and you can follow her on Instagram – @angelalendz .  She paints all kinds of animals and has even painted a client’s pet donkey.  We are so lucky to have this talented woman in Fort Worth!

The Beer or Whiskey Lover

Fort Worth, there is a new brewery in town.  It’s called Wild Acre Brewing, and it would be an amazing gift to be one of the first to try this new Brew!  Grab a six-pack, a hat, and a t-shirt, and voila, you have the perfect gift! Whiskey lovers everywhere need the new glasses that separates the ice from the drink so that it doesn’t get watered down.  Another option is to buy a giant ice ball mold that would be perfect paired with his favorite bottle!  My kids love making the giant ice balls! We found the mold at Williams Sonoma.

The Science and History Lover

My dad loves new inventions, Tesla cars, Space X, and coin collecting.  One year I got my dad an old Roman coin to add to his collection.  It is really cool to look at and imagine that this little amazing coin was around soooo long ago.  Fort Worth Coin Co. should be able to help with that idea or something similar.  Another year I bought him a book about Elon Musk.  There’s a new locally owned bookstore in town called The Last Word.  Check it out. I bet they have some great advice for you.  Another possibility is a telescope to look at the stars and planets or even the space station at it occasionally goes by.  I also highly recommend the DVD box set of the mini-series “From the Earth to the Moon”.  You can’t go wrong with that one.  My dad loved it so much that he purchased one for each of his children so that they would then share it with all his grandchildren.

Well, I’m so glad I took the time to think of different options. I’m pretty sure I’ve figured out my gifts for this year! I love the changing of seasons!  Not only for the weather, but also for the clothes, amazing new colors, fun jewelry and, of course, shoes.  The beautiful thing about Texas, I guess, is how in one week you may get all of the 4 seasons, so my closet is organized by color and not season.  You may need a cream t-shirt or a sweater depending on the day, and that is not an exaggeration.

Some fun new trends I have noticed this season are bright vibrant colors and patterns, exotic prints, and the bright floral that is absolutely everywhere.  The fact that navy and white are back just warms my soul.  Graphic tees, ripped boyfriend jeans, and sneakers are a great casual look, while some prefer a strappy sandal and a shirtdress.  High-waisted denim is still in as is the skinny jean.  The wide leg linen pant is in and looks fabulous with a fitted top and strappy heels or wedge sandals for an evening out or a luncheon.  Of course, adding a piece or two of gold jewelry amps up any look.  Recently I bought an absolutely huge “diamond” necklace from Banana Republic.  Not only does this look great with a cocktail dress, but I have worn it with denim and a white button down, and it looks fabulous.  Thinking outside of the box is so key in the fashion world.

One of my favorite “go to” outfits right now is a pair of jeans, a button down or blouse in a solid color tucked in only in the front, a brown belt with a gold buckle, dangly fun earrings, maybe an assortment of bracelets, and some wedge sandals or colorful flats.  (I love a fun flat in a solid bright color – it adds pop to any outfit, and I’ve seen some adorable ones in a floral pattern.)  It’s simple, most of us have the components in our closet, and it looks really great on.  In addition, it’s comfortable and versatile!

So many women and men I have met are extremely busy with life but know that they don’t like what they have going on in their closet at home, OR they have no idea how to wear that they DO like that’s hanging in their closet.  Take my mother-in-law – she can organize any room or closet or cabinet in your house, but take her clothes shopping, and she will second guess if it “looks right” all day long.  No, the stripe in the pants do not have to exactly match the color in the scarf.  Can you wear white in December?  It’s okay.  We all have areas where we excel and areas where we need a little help.

That’s where I come in…Or, at least, what I like to do comes in.

“Personal Styling by Amanda” started last October on a whim based on a handful of co-workers, a few customers, and a faithful friend saying I could do this.  I would basically stand in the fitting room at work and tell people “buy this dress, wear it with this necklace and this type of shoe, and go to Joe T’s patio in this because it’s that type of outfit.”

My job is to help you feel and look amazing while also giving you the confidence in doing something your own way.  I don’t come in and make everyone look like My Style.   I help you find Your Style.  That can be done with either clothes you already have but don’t know how to use, or I can make a list of what someone needs and gone shopping for them.  And shopping is not limited to Banana Republic, I go all over. Some of my favorite places to shop for myself are local consignment and thrift stores as well as boutique shops like the amazing Pax and Parker that opened up last year. Do you just need a second opinion?  I have met customers at a store and shopped with them.  One of my favorite things to do is go through a client’s closet and clean out what’s out, so you can make room for what you like and will look good on you.

Being a stylist with Stella and Dot has also been a great add-on to my services.  Every outfit for a woman needs some jewelry!
