Especially for kids, but even for adults. Everything seems to slow down a bit. Often there’s a vacation to be taken, and plenty of backyard barbecues and pool time. For parents, this is a great time to take a break from the morning hustle and bustle of getting kids to school on time and all the school-related extracurriculars we must plan for. However, the big challenge when school is out is keeping our kids busy. Clearly, we can’t have them sitting around the house playing video games all day for two and a half months. Some programming is helpful to busy parents, and it’s healthy for kids to have some structure when school isn’t in session. This is where the best summer tradition of all comes in. Summer Camp!

Splish Splash
Courtesy of YMCAFW

Summer camps come in all shapes and sizes, and while there is something for everyone, it can be hard to choose the right environment and program for our kids. We all want to find summer programs that are safe, fun, entertaining, and educational for our kids. It may seem like a tall order, but take heart, dear parent; our local YMCA has all the answers and options that tick all the boxes.

The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth has been doing summer camp longer than most of us have been alive. They know what kids want and what parents need. That’s why they have developed systems to keep kids busy having fun in an environment parents can trust. They have weekly adventure day camps at multiple branches throughout the entire summer where kids can unplug, explore, learn, play, and have a blast being silly and carefree. YMCA Camp Carter offers weekly day camp and also overnight camp opportunities for kids who are ready to take their summer camp experience to the next level and test their independence in a wholesome and safe environment.

As Holli Winn, the Senior Vice President of Programs for the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth, says, “I believe summer camp is important because it builds confidence and creates friendships. It generates social and emotional learning. It offers kids the opportunity to have adult role models to learn from and bond with. It is a place that is safe for kids to explore and grow, and it provides high-quality programming that parents can feel good about.”

Camp Carter Big Swing
Courtesy of YMCAFW

Adventure camps give kids opportunities to put down their devices, discover nature, play sports, swim, improve their fitness, get some sunshine, discover their talents, and make new friends. Each weekly adventure camp has a specific theme, from superheroes to sports, that each branch participates in. With locations all over the Fort Worth metro area, there is a convenient location for every family. Best of all, YMCA adventure camps are refreshingly affordable.

In addition to weekly day camp, YMCA Camp Carter offers several overnight camp sessions on a beautiful 360-acre campus right on the Trinity River, a mere 15 minutes from downtown Fort Worth, that feels like another world altogether. Many of us who grew up in Fort Worth attended Camp Carter, and we can attest to the magical feeling we got there. A feeling that only summer camp can provide. Camp Carter is a true overnight camp experience, and all that implies right here in our own backyard. It is the perfect next step when your child, and you as parents, are ready to graduate from day camp to the full summer camp experience.

For kids, summer camp is pure fun. For parents, it can be an anxious time. We want our kids to have fun, make great memories, and learn, but we also want them to be safe. The YMCA, perhaps better than any organization, understands this and takes measures above and beyond any required steps to ensure the safety of our most precious gifts: our children. YMCA camp counselors, lifeguards, and staff receive extensive training across myriad topics to ensure kids not only have fun but also feel safe and respected during their time at camp.

The summer experiences the YMCA offers are fun, safe, affordable, and convenient. By working with kids in this way, YMCA summer camps build confidence by allowing them to be themselves, grow, learn, explore, create new friendships, and make lasting summer memories. They offer everything kids and parents want and need in a summer camp, and that is why we love them!

As back-to-school season approaches (Fort Worth ISD starts in less than a month!), it’s also time to think about fall sports at the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth. Registration is now open for soccer, volleyball, and baseball and there’s never been a better time to jump in.

What makes YMCA sports different? It’s not just the game, it’s the community and life lessons learned with each kick, volley, and swing.

Photo courtesy of YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth

How many of us played Y sports growing up? I did. My sister did. Most of my family and friends did. While I never excelled at soccer or basketball, the lessons learned, like how to work as a team and how to win and lose gracefully, stayed with me for a lifetime. And that’s what Y sports are all about.

Recently, I spoke with Karissa Sorrells, a YMCA branch sports director, and Eddie Norgard, the District Executive Director of Programs and Services for the YMCA, about what makes a YMCA sports experience different from other programs.

YMCA sports are built on connection: kids build confidence and skills while families grow closer. These programs blend the structure and discipline of organized athletics with a warm, welcoming environment where beginners feel at home. Whether your child is new to the sport or just needs a place to belong, there’s a team waiting to welcome them.

Photo courtesy of YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth

But it doesn’t stop with the players. Parents, grandparents, siblings – there’s room for the whole family to get involved.

“This is a special time when you get to bond with your child on a whole different level,” said Karissa. “You get to teach them to be a leader, teach them sportsmanship… We had a family where the big brother coached his little sister’s team, and it turned into a whole family activity.”

Older siblings 18 and up can volunteer to coach, and even younger siblings can get in on the action. Eddie shared, “We’ve had siblings make appreciation messages for the players and coaches before. We love it when the whole family volunteers.”

That spirit of inclusion extends to the sidelines and beyond. YMCA sports aren’t about intense tryouts or cutthroat competition, they’re about participation, growth, and support. Everyone plays. Everyone is welcome.

Photo courtesy of YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth

Children as young as three can start building skills on a soccer or baseball [Writer’s note: With two kiddos who played soccer as little ones, I’ve got to say there’s almost nothing cuter than a bunch of preschoolers figuring out how to play as a team.] Volleyball begins in second grade and continues through high school, offering players the chance to grow with the sport year after year.

(And if you’re worried about those early Saturday games, don’t be. “I’ve learned not to schedule games as early as I did in the past,” Karissa said with a laugh.)

Fall baseball at the YMCA’s Sports Complex, is another standout. “What’s really great about the Sports Complex is that it’s a really vibrant place,” Eddie shared. “It’s oriented by age groups with three baseball fields, two t-ball fields, three batting cages, and four multi-use fields. It is a space that grows with the kids.”

Photo courtesy of YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth

While YMCA sports provide valuable training and opportunities for athletic growth, the biggest win is often the life lessons: how to lead, how to lose gracefully, how to support others, and how to be part of something bigger than yourself.

And no child is left out. “The YMCA continues to provide scholarship opportunities,” Eddie emphasized. “We are absolutely committed to providing opportunities to everyone. We never turn anyone away due to an inability to pay.”

Karissa sums it up best: “When I’m on the field, and the grass is still wet, and the kids are excited, and the parents are all supporting all the kids on the team. there is an energy there… I love that community!”

The campaign highlights the critical need for caregivers to stay alert when supervising children around water and encourages families to put their phones away and stay focused at pools, lakes, beaches, or other bodies of water.

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury and death among children ages 1 to 4. Statistics from the National Drowning Prevention Alliance show that 88% of drownings occur with at least one adult present.

“People think they’ll hear someone if they’re struggling in the water, because that’s what we see in TV and movies. In reality, drowning is silent and can happen in as little as 30 seconds. When we’re looking at our phones, we don’t see what’s happening around us,” said Keith Kotar, association director of aquatics for the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth.

As part of the Phones Down, Eyes Up campaign, the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth is calling on families to designate a “water watcher”— an adult whose sole responsibility is to supervise children near water, free from distractions like phones, conversations, or alcohol. “We know how easily distractions can happen around water, but just one moment of inattention can have serious consequences,” Kotar said. “We are committed to empowering families with the tools and information they need to stay safe around water.”

Kotar offers these tips to keep kids safe in and around water.

Stay off cell phones.

Always keep children under active supervision.

Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult.

Make sure older children swim with a partner every time.

Designate a responsible person to watch the water when people are in the pool; never allow anyone to swim alone.

Trade off water watcher duties every 10 to 15 minutes.

Have young or inexperienced swimmers wear a U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket. Arm floaties and other devices can easily fail.

Surround your backyard pool with a secure fence with childproof locks.

Keep pool gates locked at all times.

Learn CPR and first aid.

With the help of multiple funders and supporters, the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth will officially open the doors to a reimagined and remodeled Eastside YMCA Community Impact Center, designed to serve as a catalyst for community change and empowerment for the Fort Worth neighborhood. The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, at 1500 Sandy Lane in Fort Worth.

The event will showcase the results of the first phase of a three-phase redevelopment and expansion effort of the Eastside YMCA, situated on 16.4 acres. That initial phase included renovation of the existing building and outdoor areas; room for learning, wellness and fitness; a community demonstration kitchen; and redesigned spaces for teens and youth to explore fitness and technology.

The YMCA also plans to build a full-sized gymnasium and revitalize the outdoor sports field and court and establish a childcare center on-site to provide a safe and nurturing environment for area children. The YMCA will offer income-based scholarships and financial support for memberships and programs.

Serving the needs of a community

The YMCA’s Eastside location faced a temporary closure in 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted its essential services and programs. Efforts to revitalize the building and transform it into a Community Impact Center began in 2021 under the leadership of YMCA president and CEO Mike Brown and a dedicated committee of advocates and leaders. The YMCA also held a series of listening sessions with residents to seek input on the types and delivery of services that would be most impactful.

Renovation efforts were made possible with support from the City of Fort Worth, the Sid Richardson Foundation, and U.S. Representative Marc Veasey, who helped secure $2.4 million in federal funding. An additional $3.5 million was provided through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding. The total cost for the revitalization efforts is anticipated to be $16 million. The YMCA is seeking additional funding to support the final phases of the project.

Home to a Healthy Hub

Thanks to Cook Children’s Health Care System and Texas Health Resources, Eastside families in need will also have access to no-cost fresh produce and other staples to support well-being.

The Community Impact Center will be home to one of 20 Good For You Healthy Hub locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Good For You program is an initiative of Texas Health Community Hope, where Texas Health lives its mission to improve community well-being. Healthy Hubs offer fresh fruits and vegetables as well as recipe cards, cooking utensils, nutrition education workshops and other resources to help families in need make the most of the produce they receive. Cook Children’s Center for Community Health provided a two-year grant to help fund the Eastside YMCA Healthy Hub location, and will offer educational sessions that focus on nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and other ways to support healthy lifestyles.

“Everything we do at the YMCA is in service of ensuring that people and communities thrive,” Brown said. “We are grateful to the many partners and supporters who’ve helped us restore this important resource for the Eastside community and look forward to continuing our efforts in the next phases of this project.”

The beloved yet admittedly ugly Christmas tree topper that has pride of place. Aunt Alberta’s potato salad, without which no Fourth of July cookout is complete.

Thanksgiving, even more than other holidays, is all about traditions. From Great-Great-Great-Grandmother Rachel Elizabeth’s gravy boat to Uncle Charlie’s insistence on the marshmallow-topped yams that no one eats, our holiday traditions strengthen our connection to our family and comfort us.

For 43 years, the YMCA Turkey Trot has been a Thanksgiving tradition for many Fort Worthians. Whether they walk the 1K, jog the 5K, or run the 8K, thousands start Thanksgiving morning at the Turkey Trot. In doing so, they celebrate with and give back to their community. I recently talked with Jacklinn Sotello, the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth’s Executive Director of Community Health, and Keith Kotar, Course Director, about the 2024 Turkey Trot.

Photo courtesy of the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth

“It’s so much more than a run,” Jacklinn said. “It’s a tradition that people participate in year after year. We have a costume contest – it’s great to see all the turkeys running! There’s a kid zone by Alley Cats Entertainment. We have a DJ. Families run with their dogs and strollers. You’re going to start your Thanksgiving off right and get your steps in early!”

This is the second year that the Turkey Trot has been at The Shops at Clearfork. The courses for the races have been updated after last year. “Last year, the big issue was getting in and out while the races were starting,” said Keith. “We’ve moved the starting line from Monahans Avenue to south of Marathon Avenue. Monahans Avenue will be open to traffic the entire time.”

Another change for 2024 is the VIP Package. Available to only400 registrants, the upgrade add on includes a pass to the VIP tent where you can have breakfast, an exclusive VIP t-shirt in addition to the race shirt, a designated starting line coral, and what might be the most enticing perk – dedicated restrooms.

A perk available to all runners on the day of the race is a 10% discount at Marché Bleu. The market and coffee bar planned to be closed on Thanksgiving, but when they heard about the Turkey Trot, they decided to open for the day and offered the runners a discount. If that’s not Fort Worth spirit, I don’t know what is!

Photo courtesy of the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth

Another perk for runners this year is non-members registered for the race can join any location of the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth with no fees through December 31!

Last year, a little more than 10,000 people registered for the races, and 15,000 showed up. This year, the YMCA is capping the number of participants, so be sure to register early! “While we love people who just walk up to register for the run on the day-of, we can’t guarantee that all runners will get their desired shirt sizes if they wait until Thanksgiving to register,” Jacklinn said. Keith added, “Remember to get there early. Ten thousand people is a lot.”

You don’t have to be a member of the YMCA to run the Turkey Trot, and you don’t need to register to join the free activities, kids zone and vendor fair that accompany the race day event. .

Beyond the camaraderie, the tradition, and the exercise, you’re giving back to your community when you run the Turkey Trot. Your registration fee goes back to support the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth’s scholarship programs. While you get your steps in and enjoy a beautiful fall morning along the Trinity, you’re helping people access all the YMCA offers. And nothing is more quintessentially Fort Worth than helping others while having fun with your family and friends.

When Mike E. Brown became president and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth, he saw the opportunity to expand the Y’s offerings so all youth and adults could find community at the Y. One of his dreams was to open a recording studio and fine arts wing.

Wait, what? A YMCA recording studio?

That’s right. A YMCA recording studio. And it’s called 4All Studios.

I recently spoke with Jenny Bishop, the Y’s new Executive Director of Visual and Performing Arts, about 4All Studios.

“When it came to the vision behind [4All Studios],” Jenny shared, “We wanted every person in our community to find a place here at the YMCA. Whether that’s through sports or the arts, we want to provide that space to explore and learn.”

The music scene in Fort Worth has exploded in recent years, with hometown musicians like Leon Bridges and Abraham Alexander reaching global audiences and the Visit Fort Worth emphasis on support of all local artists through Hear Fort Worth. Unfortunately, booking time in a recording studio can be prohibitively expensive, but 4All Studios aims to change that.

“Studio time is expensive,” Jenny said. “So when a nonprofit steps in and says, ‘We’re going to make the time and technology accessible to all,’ it has an impact. 4All is affordable enough and accessible enough for everyone to be able to use it.”

Just a year ago, 4All Studios space was an unused racquetball court in the Amon G. Carter, Jr. Downtown YMCA. It’s now a state-of-the-art recording studio where any established artist would be pleased to record their next smash hit, but it’s open to and affordable for everyone. In addition to providing affordable access to recording studios, 4All Studios provides classes for children and adults interested in the arts.

Jenny, a skilled teacher in fine arts and a professional actress, has been working to create a schedule of classes for all ages and skill levels where classes are led by accomplished instructors.

For adults, there are dance classes (ballet, jazz, musical theater, and ballroom), acting classes, and painting classes. For elementary and middle school kids, 4All offers painting, recording, music, and editing classes. Teens can take classes in voice-over acting, acting for the camera, musical theater dancing, and more.

“The classes for kids are really tailored to what they might not get in a school experience,” Jenny said. “They’re meant to supplement what they’re learning in their fine arts program.”

4All’s first fall session runs from September through October, while the first winter session runs from November through December. The children’s winter classes will perform a production of Elf, Jr. “It will be VERY simple as we’re just starting,” Jenny said. “But I’m so excited about it!”

Jenny and her team are offering this specialized instruction to help cultivate well-rounded children and stepping in to offer an outlet for those kids in the community who have varied interests.

4All Studios isn’t content to offer state-of-the-art recording facilities and a comprehensive schedule of classes for children and adults. Oh no. A new podcast studio is opening soon, as are photographic and video studios. There will be Mommy and Me music classes, paint and sip classes once a month, music bingo nights, and watercolor sessions in Burnett Park once the weather cools and we aren’t in danger of spontaneously combusting when we step outside.

You don’t even have to be a member of the YMCA to participate in the classes or special activities or to use the studios, although members do receive a discount.

And if you’re not an expert, don’t worry. 4All Studios, just like every program of the YMCA, is designed to help you grow.

The YMCA is making sure that there is something 4All Studios for everyone to express themselves through art and music. If you love the arts but aren’t well-versed in them, or if you’re a professional, you are welcome. The YMCA will do what it is known for – meeting people where they are in their journey and helping them flourish.

The post 4All Studios Proves the YMCA Really Is for All first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

I did. My sister did. Most of my friends and family did. The sports program at the YMCA was a large part of my childhood. And while I never excelled at either soccer or basketball, I did learn how to work as a team and how to win and lose gracefully.

Recently, I spoke with Danny Clemons, Senior Executive Director of Sports & Innovation at the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth. We were supposed to be talking about spring and summer sports sign-ups (and you can find that at the end of this article!), our conversation focused more on how playing sports through the YMCA helps a child grow.

“Life can’t be all about winning,” Danny said. “These kids need to learn how to win appropriately and lose gracefully.”

Photo courtesy of the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth

Much has been made recently about how children are so coddled that they no longer know how to fail. Of course, we want our children to have better lives than we have, but by removing every obstacle in a child’s life, we rob them of the opportunity to learn through losing. And if a kid only wins, they lack the empathy to win gracefully.

“The YMCA is all about building confidence as well as building skills,” Danny said. “We offer the opportunity for kids to experiment with different sports while they learn and grow.”

Remember how good it felt to kick that winning goal or grab that rebound that turned the game around? And remember how a pat on the back from the coach or a hug from a teammate could dry your tears when you missed a pitch or a save? That’s what YMCA sports are all about.

Photo courtesy of the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth

Every child who plays YMCA sports takes this pledge:

“Win or lose, I pledge before God to do my best; to be a team player; to respect my opponents, teammates, and officials; and to improve myself in spirit, mind, and body.”

While many kiddos who play YMCA sports do not choose to continue with the program, the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth now offers summer sports camps for those who want to go all in on a particular sport. These five-day camps offer a more intensive focus on developing skills for older children.

Danny said, “When we have the kids for three hours every day, we can integrate confidence work, team building work as well as working on speed and agility. We’re still helping them grow and learn through sport while really drilling down into specific skills.”

So, are you ready to sign up your kiddos? Here are all the details:

Registration Deadlines

Soccer – February 11

Volleyball – February 18

Football – May 5

Baseball – May 5

Pricing

At every location, registration is $85 for YMCA members and $145 for non-members. Financial assistance is available and is very easy. Simply walk into any YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth location and show proof that your child qualifies for free or reduced school lunches, and you automatically get half off the registration. That’s it. (“We don’t like paperwork any more than you do,” Danny confided.”)

Volunteer Coaching

If you want to volunteer to be a coach, congratulations! The YMCA welcomes you. All coaches undergo an extensive background check and are assigned to a team. They are provided with what Danny calls “How to Coach 101.”

“A lot of people come into coaching remembering drills and skills they learned when they played high school or college sports,” Danny said. “We give them guidelines as to where these kids are developmentally. And don’t worry, while being a coach may seem scary, you’re probably better than the six-year-olds you’re coaching. You just have to stay one lesson ahead of them!”

Danny continued, ” At the end of the day, it’s not about having a coach who’s the most technically proficient. It’s about being the coach who shows up every time and demonstrates how to be kind. It’s not about soccer. It’s about building better small human beings.”

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury and death among children ages 1 to 4. Last year alone, nine youth under the age of 18 drowned in and around Fort Worth. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most drownings happen in home swimming pools, but apartment complex pools can also be a safety hazard.

To help keep kids safe, the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth is offering free swimming lessons at 40 Tarrant County apartment complexes. The first 20 sessions will be held May 30 to June 22 and the second 20 from June 26 to July 28. The lessons are designed to teach children and their caregivers how to stay safe in and around water. The YMCA still has openings for apartment complexes interested in signing up to offer this free program to their residents.

“About 60% of childhood drowning incidents occur within 10 feet of safety and almost 90% of them happen under some form of supervision,” said Leah LeMaire, YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth’s association director of aquatics. “Teaching children how to swim and be safe around water are important life skills. Even if a child can swim, parents and caregivers must also always be on high alert.”

Drowning is silent, LeMaire said, and the key to water safety is never letting down your guard. Even two seconds of inattention is long enough to have disastrous consequences. She offers these tips to keep kids safe in and around water.

LeMaire added that it’s important not to jump in to save someone who is struggling, unless you are a trained lifeguard, as you will likely be pulled underwater yourself. Teach children “Reach, Throw, Don’t Go” and demonstrate how to use a noodle or ring buoy to pull someone to safety.

The YMCA is also partnering with the Fort Worth Drowning Coalition to provide two-week swim lesson sessions for $10 throughout the summer at McDonald YMCA, Camp Carter YMCA and Ryan YMCA.

Chi Rho Award: Lillie M. Biggins

Lillie Biggins received the Chi Rho Award, the highest honor given to a YMCA volunteer, in recognition of her YMCA service and dedication helping the Fort Worth community.

Biggins has served as a YMCA board member since 2013, and has played a pivotal role in supporting the Eastside YMCA. She was president of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth, where she championed the establishment of a senior health clinic. She also served as co-chair of the city of Fort Worth’s Race and Culture Task Force.

Faith, family and commitment to service define Biggins’ life, and she has been honored statewide and beyond for all she does. She was inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame, and received the President’s Call to Service Award, the nation’s highest honor for volunteer service.

Community Partnership Award: Representative Marc Veasey

U.S. Representative Marc Veasey received the Community Partnership Award, which honors collaborative actions that significantly impact the YMCA and the individuals it serves, for his efforts on behalf of the YMCA.

Veasey helped secure $3.89 million in federal funding for renovation of the Eastside YMCA and construction of an outdoor recreation area at the William M. McDonald YMCA. His actions advanced the YMCA’s mission of providing opportunities for people of all ages to connect and engage, thereby improving overall community quality of life.

Throughout his Congressional tenure, Veasey has viewed the YMCA as a critical partner in serving his constituents. The funding secured for these projects illustrates the value he brings to that partnership.

Community Champion Award: County Commissioner Roy C. Brooks

Tarrant County Commissioner Roy C. Brooks received the Community Champion Award, which honors an exceptional individual or entity that has shown unwavering dedication in supporting and advocating for the YMCA mission and vision. Brooks has demonstrated that commitment for more than 30 years.

He established meaningful and lasting connections between the community and the YMCA. He has been a vital partner in efforts to renovate and reopen closed YMCA locations as community hubs. He has advocated for healthcare for the homeless, and focused attention on access to care, healthcare disparities and other crucial community concerns.

Through the decades, he has served Fort Worth area residents as a volunteer, city official and county commissioner. His roles have changed, but his commitment to bettering his community has remained constant.

“The YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth values community involvement to better serve individuals and families. Each of our award recipients has helped me and our Y reconnect with the community, which allowed us to reach milestones that some deemed impossible,” said Mike Brown, president and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth. “We recognize these three outstanding individuals because they inspire all of us who work with the YMCA to be the best versions of ourselves.”
