To All the Fathers
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!
Fathers have gotten a bad rap in the past few decades. They are portrayed as either bumbling idiots or domineering tyrants. Yes, there are fathers who are bumbling idiots, and there are fathers who are domineering tyrants. But far more frequently, fathers are just people who are trying to get by without a handbook.
So this Father’s Day, we say thank you.
To the fathers who are there are their children, supporting them and cheering them on, thank you. We couldn’t do it without you.
To the fathers who are kept from their children by former partners or by the courts, we see you and acknowledge your pain.
To the fathers whose children are gone, we mourn with you.
To the stepfathers who have to walk the line between parent and “you’re not my real dad,” you are seen and appreciated.
To the fathers who work two or three jobs to support their children, thereby missing milestones, thank you for your sacrifice.
To the mothers who are having to be mother and father, you are doing a hard job, and we support you.
To the fathers who don’t know where their children are or how they are doing, we stand with you in your uncertainty.
To the fathers who have hit the dreaded teen years and don’t know how to deal with the hormones and emotions and chaos, solidarity. We get it.
To the fathers who adopted their children and are told they aren’t “real” fathers because of it, we know you’re real, and we love you just as much as if we shared any DNA. We wouldn’t be here without you.
To the “girl dads” who make sure their daughters know they can fly high because Daddy support them, thank you.
To the “boy dads” who teach their sons to treat everyone with respect in an culture of toxic masculinity, thank you.
To the fathers of children who don’t fit into neat little boxes and love and support those kiddos with their whole hearts, you are doing God’s work.
Happy Father’s Day to all kinds of fathers. We hope you got more than a tie!
