Worthy Convos: Sara Southerland on Overcoming Fear and Finding Possibilities
Sara Southerland describes herself as a multipassionate woman. A holistic coach, sound healing practitioner, soulful business mentor and entrepreneur, “multipassionate” is spot on. As the founder of Future Self Health, Southerland centers her entire practice around empowering women and femmes to step into their purpose. Essentially, her calling is helping you answer yours.
In your own journey, you talk about coming home to yourself. What do you mean by that?
So much of our lives is about doing, checking off the list and making sure the details of life are attended to. We are experts are taking care of everything… except often ourselves. And even when we do pay attention to ourselves, there’s so many messages out there about “eat this way, move this way, work this way, speak this way” that it can feel overwhelming trying to “get it right.”
In my work, I help my clients come back home to themselves, to connect with their body, mind and spirit as a revolutionary act; to tap into their intuition, inner knowing and truth in a deeper way, so they can find more alignment, authenticity and abundance in their lives, health and businesses.
Where do you typically start with a client?
I love getting to set intentions for the work we’re setting out to do together. In my relationship with a client, I am holding space for shifts and healing to happen, and they are showing up and committing to themselves and the process. We’ll usually start with a process of visioning and what I call “creating goals with soul” together, to identify how they can begin to embody the person they are becoming, starting even now.
Why does it feel so daunting and difficult to find one’s purpose?
At times finding our purpose means going against the grain, and that might mean being vulnerable, or disappointing the ones we love most if they don’t understand our path. It’s also a journey into the unknown. We’re so taught to find a linear path, to know the start and end points but often in a purpose journey, the road is windy and unfolds as we walk it. To find our purpose, we have to be willing to take that step into the unknown, trust the process, and know that on the other side of discomfort is where the magic often lives.

In your practice, what is the most common obstacle clients must overcome?
I would say fear and the limits we put on ourselves is the most common obstacle clients have to overcome. We’ve been conditioned to what I call “one-way-ism”. One way of making a living, one way of how we express ourselves, one way of a relationship, living situation, to dress, to look, etc. These roots run deep, and it can take some deep shadow work to go within, explore the depths of these old beliefs and fears and begin to invite in shifts. From that journey we can find a place of peace, healing, and possibility that we didn’t see or have available to us before. It can be hard work, but it’s from the darkest places that new things are born.
What makes you proud to be a woman?
Women are so strong! We are creators in so many senses of the word. We have so much power. And not the power we often see in the world, but the power of connection deeply woven in our beings. I think that women will save the world.
