The Kimbell’s Free Summer Community Programs

The Kimbell Art Museum will host free programs for the entire community this summer, including films, happy hours, performances, and more. The museum’s signature summer event, the free Family Festival/Fiesta de la Familia, takes place on National Ice Cream Sunday, July 19, and includes free ice cream from Melt. And many programs throughout the summer offer interesting ways to learn more about the current special exhibition The Holy Sepulcher: Treasures from the Terra Sancta Museum, Jerusalem.

FREE PUBLIC PROGRAMS

Ongoing Programs

In addition to the free programs listed below, the museum also offers a range of regular, free Public Tours exploring the museum’s permanent collection, special exhibitions, and architecture.

Kimbell Kids Drop-In Studios introduce children (ages 12 and younger) and their adult companions to fun and inspiring ways to enjoy art through gallery explorations and related studio-art projects on selected Saturdays from 1 to 1:45 p.m. The themes are VIPs in June and FUNctional Art in July and August. Sign-up begins at noon in the Kahn Building.

Happy Hours on Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Kimbell Café feature live music and a selection of beverages and snacks available for purchase. No reservations are required. Members receive a 10% discount on beverages during Happy Hours. Note: The Kimbell Café will not be open for Happy Hour on Friday, June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday, or on July 3, in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.

Center for Transforming Lives Welcomes Amy Newell to the Board

Center for Transforming Lives is pleased to welcome Amy Newell to its Board of Directors. In this leadership role, she will also serve as Chair of the Development Committee, further advancing the organization’s mission to partner with single mothers and their children so they can thrive.

Newell is an entrepreneur and community leader with extensive experience in nonprofit development and fundraising. As the Founder and CEO of Membership Toolkit, she built and led a mission-driven technology platform that supported more than 3,000 nonprofits in raising more than $150 million annually while managing millions of volunteers and communications.

With more than two decades of hands-on volunteer leadership, Newell has served in key roles such as president and volunteer coordinator, where she strengthened donor engagement, organized fundraising efforts and aligned community initiatives with organizational goals. Her expertise includes fundraising strategy, volunteer coordination and nonprofit operations.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering from Kansas State University and is passionate about empowering organizations to grow their impact through effective community engagement and development practices.

“Amy has been an engaged, thoughtful supporter of Center for Transforming Lives for many years,” said Carol Klocek, President and CEO. “We are excited about the passion and expertise she brings to the board. She is joining a group of high-caliber, committed individuals who work together to ensure that Center for Transforming Lives has the greatest impact possible in our community, creating cycles of financial and emotional well-being for mothers and their children.”

Amy and her husband, Jeff Newell, began supporting Center for Transforming Lives in 2017 and have since served in volunteer leadership roles on multiple committees. Together, they were key ambassadors for the organization’s capital campaign for the new Riverside Campus, which opened in 2025.
Newell joins an esteemed list of board members including:

Fort Worth Country Day Class of 2026 Earns Over $15 Million in Scholarships

Fort Worth Country Day’s (FWCD) Class of 2026 has earned more than $15.6 million in merit-based scholarships, awarded to 92% of its 86 graduating seniors. Thirty-nine members of the class will utilize over $2 million at their respective colleges and universities. The graduating class received acceptances from 172 institutions after submitting 836 applications to 203 colleges and universities nationwide.

Fifty-one percent of the senior class will attend out-of-state colleges and universities in the fall, with the remaining 49% choosing to stay in Texas to pursue their higher education. Texas Christian University leads as the highest-enrolling institution for this class with 13 students. The University of Texas at Austin follows with eight students, and Texas A&M University will enroll seven students. Additionally, two students from the Class of 2026 gained admission to Ivy League institutions.

FWCD valedictorian Andrew Lobo will attend Princeton University this fall to study electrical engineering. Lobo is a National Merit Finalist and a U.S. Presidential Scholars Program Candidate whose time at FWCD was defined by extensive academic achievements and community involvement. Salutatorian Eliza Peacock will attend Wake Forest University, where she plans to major in English. Peacock demonstrated a strong commitment to service throughout her high school career by co-founding a local literacy program and interning with a women-run company during extensive mission work in Ethiopia.

Other highlights from the Class of 2026 include:

12 seniors were named National Merit Finalists or National Merit Commended Scholars.
22 seniors earned College Board National Recognition Awards.
29 seniors were named AP Scholars, AP Scholars with Honor, and AP Scholars with Distinction.
73% of the Class of 2026 were accepted to their first-choice college or university.
FWCD seniors received offers of admission from four Ivy League institutions —Harvard University, Princeton University, University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University — with two seniors choosing to enroll.
Three students will pursue degrees in fine arts, including:
- Sophia Jiang, minoring in dance at Barnard College in New York City
- Eden Turner, majoring in art history at the University of Texas at Austin
- Ava Vanderpoel, studying musical theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City

The Modern’s Teen/Artist Project Annual Exhibition

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth announces the annual exhibition featuring work created by students participating in the Modern’s Teen/Artist Project.

The exhibition will be on view to the public from June 5 until June 30, 2026, at The Pool Near Southside, located at 1801 8th Avenue, Fort Worth, TX, 76110. An opening reception will be held on June 5, from 6 to 8 pm.

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth’s Teen/Artist Project (TAP) is an ongoing program in which the Museum partners with regional and national teaching artists to expand the knowledge of art, analysis, and techniques for young, aspiring artists. High school students are selected to participate in the free TAP program through a portfolio and application process. An important objective of TAP is for both students and visiting artists to develop a personal and meaningful relationship with the Modern and its holdings through close, continuous investigation.

Visiting artists work with the Modern Education Department to design relevant and challenging seminars spanning one to four weeks. These artist-run workshops include transdisciplinary conversations within the museum galleries and corresponding projects in the museum’s studio.

With every TAP season, students glean rich insights into the ideas and practices of the makers and thinkers they’ve had the opportunity to work with, as well as develop their own attitudes and impulses within the field of contemporary art.

It’s a New Chapter for Roy Pope

Westland Hospitality announces plans to work in partnership with Roy Pope’s current ownership to lead the next chapter of the Roy Pope space at 2300 Merrick Street. The new concept will preserve the Roy Pope name and honor its longstanding place in the community while introducing a refreshed dining experience rooted in hospitality, history, and Southern Americana flavor.

First opened in 1943 by Roy and Rose Pope as a neighborhood grocery store and meat market, Roy Pope became known for quality ingredients, prepared foods, personal service, and its role as a familiar stop for generations of west Fort Worth families. Over the years, the business evolved through different ownership chapters while remaining tied to the neighborhoods surrounding Camp Bowie, Westover, and the Cultural District.

“Roy Pope has always belonged to the neighborhood in a very special way,” said Mark Harris, Developer and Owner of Roy Pope. “As we looked toward its next chapter, Bourke, Gigi, and Westland Hospitality stood out for three reasons. First, they understand Fort Worth. Second, they understand hospitality. Third, they have shown a real respect for places that matter to the community.”

For Westland Hospitality, the opportunity reflects the group’s broader mission to honor local roots, preserve meaningful Fort Worth dining traditions, and create memorable experiences that bring people together.

“Roy Pope is dear to my heart,” said Bourke Harvey, Managing Partner of Westland Hospitality. “I worked there bagging groceries when I was in junior high, as did my brothers. That kind of connection stays with you. We are super busy at Westland Hospitality, but this was an opportunity we could not pass up. The new Roy Pope will take the concept in a refreshed direction while preserving the familiarity and sense of place that have made it meaningful to the surrounding community. The menu will be developed by Gigi Howell, Juan Rodriguez, and Levi Gardner, Executive Chef at Margie’s Italian Gardens and a culinary leader within Westland Hospitality. Gardner, who has helped curate special menus across Westland’s family of concepts, will serve as Executive Chef for Roy Pope and lead the kitchen as the concept takes shape.

“This is personal for a lot of us,” said Gigi Howell, Operating Partner of Westland Hospitality. “I remember Roy Pope as the kind of place you found a reason to visit. For me, that meant leaving campus when I probably was not supposed to so I could get some of that fried chicken. Those memories matter. Our goal is to protect that sense of familiarity while giving the neighborhood a beautiful place to gather, eat well, and feel at home.”

The new concept will continue to serve the neighborhoods that have long supported Roy Pope, offering a regular go-to destination for lunches, dinners, casual gatherings, and special moments. While the menu and experience will evolve, the intent is to keep Roy Pope rooted in the community that shaped it.

“Westland Hospitality was built around the belief that great meals begin with a sense of belonging,” Howell added. “Roy Pope gives us a chance to honor a Fort Worth institution while creating something fresh, warm, and welcoming for the next generation.”

Westland Hospitality’s growing family of concepts, including JD’s Hamburgers, Pulido’s Kitchen & Cantina, Margie’s Italian Gardens, Curly’s Frozen Custard, Magdalena’s Catering & Events, West Side Cafe, Westland Gardens, and Westland Bar Co., reflects its commitment to preserving local character while creating new hospitality experiences. Each concept is guided by the company’s mission to serve with heart and humility, honor tradition, enrich community, and make the moment special.

Treasures of the Pharaohs Coming to the Kimbell

The Kimbell Art Museum today announced that it will be one of only two North American venues for the landmark exhibition Treasures of the Pharaohs.

Through 130 carefully selected artifacts from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and the Luxor Museum, Treasures of the Pharaohs offers rare insights into the daily life, social structures, religious practices, and legacies of the Egyptian pharaohs. Three thousand years of ancient Egyptian history are presented through an array of dazzling royal treasures expertly crafted from gold, granite, lapis lazuli, and other precious materials, along with objects that reveal the inner workings of this sophisticated civilization that continues to intrigue, influence, and inspire the modern world. Treasures of the Pharaohs will be on view at the Kimbell from March 14 through September 19, 2027, in the museum’s Renzo Piano Pavilion.

“Treasures of the Pharaohs will awe,” said Eric M. Lee, the museum’s director. “From the scale and splendor of some of the artifacts on view to the revelations about day-to-day life and inclusion of objects from one of the most recently excavated sites in Egypt, visitors will find this exhibition brilliant, both visually and intellectually.”

The exhibition paints an unparalleled picture of the lives of the pharaohs, from the grandeur surrounding their kingship, deity worship, and elaborate preparations for the afterlife, to the strict hierarchies and day-to-day routines of the people around them—a highly organized bureaucracy critical to maintaining Egypt’s divine kingship. Key aspects of ancient Egyptian civilization are explored through six thematic sections: The Treasures of the Pharaohs; People Around the Pharaohs; Religion and Beliefs: The World of Gods and Goddesses; Daily Life in Ancient Egypt; The Golden City; and Death and the Afterlife in Ancient Egypt.

Objects that proclaim the pharaohs’ power and status range from monumental granite statues to elegantly designed gold jewelry and richly decorated furnishings. In contrast to royal art, newly discovered artifacts from King Amenhotep’s workers’ community within the “Golden City” in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings will be introduced to North America for the first time, providing a glimpse into the lives of those often overlooked in presentations of ancient Egyptian art history. Statues representing various deities, carved and painted stone funerary stele, and lavishly decorated sarcophagi and other exquisite tomb furnishings convey the religious beliefs that shaped the Egyptian understanding of the world and the afterlife.

Highlights include works directly associated with pharaohs and their families, dating from Dynasty I (c. 3100 BC) to the Ptolemaic period (321 BC). Among them are some made in precious metal: the golden sarcophagus of Queen Ahhotep, the gold funerary mask of Amenemope, the golden sarcophagus of Thuya, the gold funerary covering of Pharaoh Psusennes I, the gold collar of Psusennes I, the painted and gilded wooden Canopic Box of Yuya with Sloping Lid on a Sled, and the gilded wooden chair of Princess Sitamun. Sculptures in stone are also represented, including the carved schist Menkaure Triad and the limestone relief of Akhenaten and His Family. A rare manuscript, the Hieroglyphic Funerary Papyrus of the Songstress of Amoun Djedkhonsuiusankh, is also featured.

Treasures of the Pharaohs is currently on view at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome, where it is on track to become one of the most highly attended exhibitions in the museum’s history. After its close in Rome on June 14, 2026, the exhibition will be on view at the de Young museum in San Francisco from August 1, 2026, through January 31, 2027, prior to its presentation in Fort Worth.

The exhibition curator is Dr. Tarek el-Awady, former director of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The exhibition is accompanied by a major scholarly catalogue by Egyptian archaeologist Dr. Zahi Hawass. The exhibition’s presentation at the Kimbell is organized by Jennifer Casler Price, senior curator of Asian, African, and ancient American art.

“These remarkable works offer a broad perspective on the lives of the pharaohs and those who served them,” said Casler Price. “From stunning treasures that convey the power and awe of divine kings, to the humble yet fascinating objects of everyday life, this exhibition illuminates the glory and wonder of ancient Egyptian civilization.”

The exhibition is organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Kimbell Art Museum, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), in collaboration with ALES SpA, the in-house company of the Italian Ministry of Culture, and MondoMostre.

Get Your Tickets to Mingle

This summer, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (the Carter) is hosting their annual Midsummer Mingle designed for DFW’s young professionals.

The event features an evening of tasty food, signature cocktails, and creativity inspired by the 250th birthday of the United States and the Carter’s upcoming exhibition The Statue of Liberty from Bartholdi to Warhol. Patriotic costumes are encouraged but not required. Prizes will be presented to the costume contest winners voted America’s sweethearts!

Hosted by Carter Society, the Museum’s membership group for young professionals, Midsummer Mingle provides a unique opportunity for attendees to connect through art while enjoying an exclusive after-hours experience at the Carter.

Come From Away at Casa Mañana Tells the Story of Local American Airlines Captain

Casa Mañana Theatre closes its 2025-26 Broadway Season with Come From Away, a Broadway musical sensation with deep local ties. The show, presented by Autobahn, runs May 30 through June 7. Tickets are on sale now.

Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of a small town that welcomed 7,000 strangers in the aftermath of 9/11. Diverted flights were forced to land in Gander, Newfoundland, where the community came together to care for the pilots and passengers of the planes.

The characters in the show are based on the real people who lived or landed in Gander that day. One of whom is Captain Beverley Bass, a TCU alum and local pilot who is the first female captain of an American Airlines commercial plane. The song “Me and the Sky” details Bass’ experience as a female pilot, the struggles she faced and the joy she feels when flying.

Other stories include that of Nick and Diane, strangers on the same plane who meet and fall in love over the course of their time in Gander; Hannah, the mother of a NYC firefighter; and Bonnie, a Gander SPCA worker who takes care of the animals on the planes, including two rare bonobo chimpanzees.

Come From Away stars Christina DeCicco as Beverley/Annette, Eddie Korbich as Claude, Braxton O. Johnson as Bob, Kelsey Jordan Ward as Janice, Jeremy Woodard as Kevin T., Chamblee Ferguson as Nick/Doug, Trey DeLuna as Kevin J./Ali, Cherish Love as Hannah, Mary Callanan as Beulah, Sharon Wheatley as Diane, Rachel Rice as Bonnie, and Will Stotts as Oz. Jennifer Smith and Dylan Ciminna are Swings.

Eugenio Contenti (Director/Choreographer) is a Director/Choreographer and Writer based in Europe and the US. Eugenio has worked in the United States, Italy, Spain, and Mexico as a director, choreographer, and writer. At Casa Mañana, he has directed A Man of No Importance, The Lightning Thief, Once, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; and this summer he will come back to Casa Mañana to direct RENT. Recent credits include: A Little Night Music, Come From Away, You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown (Italian National Tour), Bring it On, the Italian and Spanish national productions of Legally Blonde (for which he served as an artistic consultant), and others. After Come From Away, Eugenio will direct the Italian national premiere of Waitress in Italy where is also directing the National Tour of Amèlie and the National premiere of Murder for Two. Eugenio teaches masterclasses internationally, collaborating with performing arts institutions across Italy, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain. As a writer, his plays What a Drag! and Escaped the Music had national premieres in Rome and Rimini, Italy. He has also translated the libretti for the Italian productions of First Date, Curtains and Legally Blonde and is now working on translating and adapting Mrs. Doubtfire.

Matthew Stern (Music Director) is an award winning NYC-based music director and pianist. Off-Broadway credits include: Smile (AMT Theater) and Skyscraper (Urban Stages). Credits at Casa Mañana include: The SpongeBob Musical, The Wizard of Oz, Rudolph, Lightning Thief, Cats, Little Mermaid, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, Cinderella, Pippin, Grease, Seussical, Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Christmas in the Movies. Regional: Shakespeare Theater, Engeman, North Shore, Huntington, SpeakEasy, Lyric Stage Boston, Greater Boston Stage, Revival, Tantrum. Matt has served on the musical theater faculties of New York Film Academy, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Boston University, and Emerson College, and spent over a decade music directing at French Woods Festival.

Christina DeCicco (Beverley/Annette) has been seen on Broadway as Eva Peron in Evita, Arachne in Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, and Sister Mary Robert (u/s) in Sister Act, The Musical. Her National Tour credits include Glinda in Wicked. Her Off-Broadway credits include Cindy Lou in The Marvelous Wonderettes. Her TV credits include: The Blacklist, FBI, The Other Two, and The Last OG.

Eddie Korbich (Claude) has been seen on Broadway in The Music Man, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, The Little Mermaid, Face The Music, The Drowsy Chaperone (Drama Desk nom.), After the Night and the Music, Wicked, Seussical, Carousel, Sweeney Todd, and Singin’ in the Rain. His Off-Broadway credits include: Takin’ a Chance on Love (Obie Award), Assassins, Godspell, The Gifts of the Magi, Eating Raoul, Flora, The Red Menace and A Little Night Music. TV: “Mary and Rhoda,” “Law & Order,” “New York Undercover,” “Law & Order: SVU,” “Wonderland,” and “Out of the Box.”

Chamblee Ferguson (Nick/Doug) is thrilled to be back in Texas! Broadway: Come From Away. Tours: Come From Away (1st National Tour). Regional: Stage West, The Alley, Trinity Rep, & 23 seasons at Dallas Theater Center. TV/ Film: Law & Order, FBI, The Equalizer, American Crime, Friday Night Lights, PBS’ Wishbone. He is a 2011 Lunt/Fontanne Fellow and received his MFA from SMU.

Mary Callanan (Beulah) has been seen on Broadway in Bandstand (OBC), Mamma Mia! (Rosie – Final Company), and Annie. National Tours: My Fair Lady, Bridges of Madison County, Mamma Mia!, Sound of Music, Big, and Damn Yankees. Regional: Come From Away, Always, Patsy Cline, Titanic, Fiddler, Sound of Music, Kinky Boots, Oklahoma! Damn Yankees, Letters from ‘Nam, The Prom, Gypsy, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Mame, Les Misérables, Falsettos, Follies, Bat Boy, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park, Chicago, Violet.

Sharon Wheatley (Diane) originated and played the role of Diane throughout the run of Come From Away on Broadway. She can be heard on the Come From Away cast recording as well as starring in the Come From Away film on Apple TV. Other Broadway: Avenue Q, Cats, Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera.

Additional creative staff include Rob Bissinger as scenic designer, Samuel Rushen as lighting designer, Allan Branson as sound designer, Tammy Spencer as costume designer, and Catherine Petty-Rogers as hair/wig/makeup designer.

A World Premiere for the End of the Season

The Chamber Music Society of Fort Worth’s season ends on a high note with the CMSFW Ensemble, featuring Fort Worth favorite Vadym Kholodenko, a Van Cliburn gold medalist, and a world premiere composition on Saturday, May 9 at 2 p.m. at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

The ensemble includes Vadym Kholodenko, piano; CMSFW Artistic Director Gary Levinson, violin; Jennifer Betz, violin; D.J. Cheek, viola; and Allan Steele, cello. Betz, Cheek and Steele are members of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.

The multimedia pre-concert presentation begins at 1:15 p.m. Levinson discusses context and insight to the program’s composers and music, including the world premiere of Edward Green’s Trio for Strings: “A Drama in Two Acts.”

“A passionate musician with an inherent muscularity and weight to his touch, Kholodenko plays with great colour, poetry, and verve,” according to the New York Classical Review.

Vadym Kholodenko is the gold medalist of the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He has a long history with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. He was its first artistic partner in 2014, with a three-year commitment of live recordings of Sergei Prokofiev’s complete piano concertos, various concert performances and other FWSO programs.

Kholodenko debuted with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 2017 and has led major orchestras around the world in Vienna, Budapest, Milan, Taiwan, Sydney and Tokyo, as well as leading orchestras in the United States.

Born in Ukraine, his recordings have earned editor’s choice awards from BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone and a prestigious Diapason d’Or de l’annee (translated as “Golden Tuning Fork of the year” from Diapason, a French music magazine).

Writers and Whiskey: Society of Professional Journalists Spring Mixer

April 23rd’s spring mixer event at Blackland Distillery drew dozens of local writers, editors, and public relations professionals for a lively chat about Texas Whiskey.

Organized by the Fort Worth chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the quarterly events serve the dual purpose of providing networking opportunities for folks in media while raising public awareness of SPJ’s important role in advocating for First Amendment rights at the national level and of the Fort Worth chapter’s journalism scholarships and awards.

The event centered around a Q&A discussion with Fort Worth Magazine executive editor Brian Kendall and award-winning writer Shilo Urban about their March feature story on Texas whiskey.

“We were very pleased with the turnout and the excitement surrounding the discussion with Shilo and Brian,” said Edward Brown, SPJFW VP for Membership and board member. “The Fort Worth chapter of SPJ is focused on broadening our reach to people who work in PR, publicity, marketing, and communications. Many people in those fields are former journalists, and working writers and reporters rely on that community for fact-checking, press releases, and other important services.”

SPJFW is currently celebrating 80 years of serving local journalists. Current board members include Gayle Reaves, the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Dallas Morning News journalist who went on to become editor of multiple publications. Former Fort Worth Report CEO Christ Cobler remains an active board member, along with Fort Worth Report newsletter editor Tommy Cummings. Following the Q&A sessions, Cobler told the crowd that the future of journalism lies in building trust with the community.

“We’re still working on the details of our summer mixer,” Brown says. “We think a panel discussion on food writing could help us turn out another large crowd. This is an exciting time for our chapter of SPJ.”
