Happy 90th, Camp El Tesoro!

Next post

Camp Fire Camp El Tesoro, a premier destination for co-ed youth camping and outdoor experiences, is excited to celebrate its 90th anniversary.

Since its founding in 1934, Camp El Tesoro has been committed to providing a space for children and teenagers to explore the outdoors, develop self-confidence, and forge lasting friendships in a technology-free environment. To celebrate this significant milestone, El Tesoro campers aged 6-17 are enjoying an unforgettable summer filled with traditional and new activities, fostering personal growth and connection with nature.

A Legacy of Outdoor Adventure and Learning

Nestled on 223-acres where the Brazos River meets Fall Creek in Granbury, Texas, Camp El Tesoro has welcomed five generations of campers into its inclusive and nurturing community. The camp’s year-round program offerings include traditional summer overnight camp, nature day camp, specialty grief therapy camp, outdoor education field trips for schools, camp rentals for other organizations, and an annual trail run fundraiser. Program activities include nature studies, horseback riding, archery, crafts, woodshop, high and low ropes challenge course, canoeing and kayaking, and more; all designed to challenge and engage campers in a supportive atmosphere.

“As we mark the 90th anniversary of Camp El Tesoro, we reflect on the countless memories and transformative experiences shared by our campers and staff,” said Jen Smith, Camp Fire vice president outdoor connections. “Our mission has always been to provide a space where young people can grow, learn, and be themselves, away from the distractions of the ‘real world.’ This anniversary is a testament to our enduring commitment to that mission.”

Celebrating 90 Years of Camp Traditions and Innovations

Camp Fire First Texas purchased the original 90-acres on the Brazos River near Granbury for $12 an acre in 1934, and built a lodge dining hall, 11 rock cabins with screened windows, and a central shower house. Today, Camp
El Tesoro has expanded to 223-acres and features 20-modern air-conditioned cabins with full bathrooms, a dining hall that can seat 300 people, 12,000 square foot covered equestrian center, two swimming pools, two archery ranges, a sports court, a high ropes climbing tower with 300’ zipline, and miles of wooded trails. Plus, Lake Leo features floating boat and fishing docks where campers can catch and release bass, and bluegill and enjoy paddling in kayaks and canoes.

Summer camp programming has evolved over the last 90 years, but horseback riding, canoeing, outdoor cooking, and archery are all still cornerstones of El Tesoro activities. While fencing and handicrafts have evolved into yoga and ziplining, campers continue to learn new skills, try new activities, and return home with more confidence and independence.

During the school year, El Tesoro transforms into the Texas Outdoor Education Center to become an outdoor laboratory where students learn about the natural environment in TEKS-based lessons on day and overnight trips. Knowledge gained through hands-on outdoor learning activities and applications set the stage for a lifelong commitment to protect our environment and understand the natural world around them.

“As we celebrate Camp El Tesoro’s 90th anniversary, we are reminded of the enduring legacy and profound impact this camp has had on generations of young people,” said Brian Miller, President & CEO of Camp Fire First Texas. “This milestone isn’t just about honoring our past; it’s about igniting the potential for future generations to learn, grow, and thrive in an environment that fosters independence, resilience, and a deep connection with nature. The longevity of El Tesoro underscores our commitment to providing transformative camp experiences that empower youth to become leaders, adventurers, and stewards of their communities.”

An Invitation to Join the Celebration

Camp El Tesoro’s 90th anniversary is not only a milestone but also an invitation to alumni and supporters to reconnect to a community that cherishes adventure, friendship, and personal growth.

The highlight of the year-long anniversary celebration is the 90th Anniversary Celebration Camp Weekend, September 27-29, 2024. Camp alumni and their families, along with other Camp Fire supporters, are invited to Camp El Tesoro. During this celebratory weekend, they can experience the fun of camp with special activities, reconnect with old friends, and enjoy a Saturday BBQ dinner accompanied by music from Brad Thompson. Options are available for individuals, groups, and families – whether you’d like to stay for the entire weekend or join the festivities only on Saturday.

“We are thrilled to welcome campers to celebrate this special anniversary with us,” added Smith. “Whether you’re a returning camper or new to the El Tesoro family, this summer season honors our past and looks forward to the future.”

About Camp Fire First Texas

Camp Fire First Texas invests in North Texas communities by providing out-of-school time and outdoor learning programs for children and youth while also offering workforce development programs for the educators who care for them.

Our programs stand out as they are uniquely focused on the two periods of greatest brain growth and development: early childhood and early adolescence; leverage the impact of the outdoor environment on the brain to educate and connect children to each other and the world around them; and maintain a continuous improvement loop to maximize community impact.

Camp Fire believes in the dignity and the intrinsic worth of every human being. We strive to create safe and inclusive environments that celebrate diversity and foster positive relationships.

    The Mattress Factory

A Fort Worth Original Since 1896! Harry Keeton, Sr., began selling mattress supplies in Fort Worth, Texas, back in 1896. Little did he know that this was the beginning of what was later to become the fastest growing chain of factory direct sleep stores. His two sons, Harry and Frank took over the business and expanded into Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Arizona, and California; shipping furniture and mattress supplies all over the world. Four generations later, Peter Duncan, Jr., realized that there was a need for Factory Direct Marketing and began selling his products directly to the consumer at wholesale prices. This concept has spread like wildfire. Public acceptance has been overwhelming. This great demand has caused the Mattress Factory to become a leader in the industry. Our production exceeds 10000 pieces manufactured each year. Our buying power, along with the "no middleman" concept give maximum savings, which are passed along to the customer... you! When you purchase from the Original Mattress Factory you save 50% off the purchase price at a retail store.
