Tiki Biosciences – CBD Trailblazers
Cannabis, hemp, and cannabinoid products have gotten a lot of headlines and attention lately. Over the last several years many states have legalized cannabis products for medical and recreational uses. Texas is and isn’t one of those states. In 2015 the Texas Compassionate Use Program was passed. It allows medical marijuana to be used in the treatment of intractable epilepsy.
Yesterday, the Texas State Senate approved a bill that, if signed into law by Governor Abbott, will expand the program to include the treatment of terminal cancer, autism, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, seizure disorders and incurable neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s Disease.
Legalized recreational use of marijuana in Texas is likely a long way off, and while progress is being made in medical use applications, the scope remains narrow.
However, Tiki Biosciences, a recently launched, Fort Worth-based online hemp supplements business, is taking full advantage of a new legal landscape to bring high-quality, affordable CBD products to those who, heretofore, have been unable to obtain them legally. Last year’s Federal Farm Bill, crucially, makes allowance for interstate trade of hemp products. Hemp, a cannabis plant that contains less than .3% THC, can’t get you high, but it can be used to develop products that, reportedly, bring people a lot of relief.
Chris Kerr, president of Tiki, is a huge believer in the potential for hemp products, like CBD tinctures and lotions, to help people with a variety of health issues. Kerr also believes in making sure his customers have access to the best products at a reasonable price. In fact, he goes so far as to publish the results of third party lab quality testing of each of his products on the Tiki website. So, when you purchase a Tiki Biosciences tincture or lotion, you can look up the lot and batch numbers on the testing report and see for yourself the quality and purity of your purchase.
As with any industry there are less than ethical operators in the CBD world; companies that would never allow the level of transparency that Tiki offers its customers and charges far too much for inferior products. The market, as it expands and matures, will surely remove the bad apples in short order.
Besides a new Farm Bill with looser hemp restrictions, where does our government stand on the trade and use of cannabinoids?
While the FDA has not given their stamp of approval for cannabis companies to market their products as medical treatments for specific ailments, users have formed their opinions based on their own results.
They aren’t alone. Tellingly, the United States Government holds a patent on cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants. The patent abstract sheds light on the reasons our government would be interested in owning this patent, “Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties… This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants… Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention.” So, even though the FDA is still doing its due diligence on cannabinoids, other departments within the government seem to be convinced.
Tiki Biosciences, with their THC-Free CBD products, rigorous testing standards, and strong operating integrity, are clear leaders in an industry that is in its very promising infancy. Once again, a cutting edge new Fort Worth company is paving the way in a blossoming new industry.
