The doctor has his own intentions for the twins. A parable for the Immigrant experience: children bravely traveling to a Promised Land of hopes and dreams only to be experimented on and kept in cages, until with the guidance of a Native American Thief with a heart of gold, they truly learn to fly. The Artist’s Eye: Sandy Skoglund
May 18
Kimbell Art Museum

Internationally renowned artist Sandy Skoglund is known for her conceptual photography, which reflects her interest in popular culture, as well as for her directorial approach to arranging her sculptures with live models for the camera in meticulously wrought compositions. Skoglund—whose art is held in countless major museum collections across the United States—sculpted giant terracotta goldfish for an unsettling, dreamlike installation and photograph titled Revenge of the Goldfish (1981), one of the defining images of 1980s tableau photography. She continues to explore these issues in her imaginative and witty practice; but what does the art of the past mean to Skoglund, a contemporary artist? In this ongoing program, artists and architects discuss works in the museum’s collection, share the special insights of the practicing professional, and relate older art to contemporary artistic concerns, including their own.

The rest of the week focuses on gallery projects with an artist who leads campers to respond to works on view. This camp prepares young children for future camps at the Modern. A snack is provided each day. Art Camp emphasizes learning through direct observation of art and thoughtful activities. We are especially excited to focus on the exhibition Surrealism and Us: Caribbean and African Diasporic Artists since 1940 for the 2024 summer season. Distinguished area artists design and lead art activities that encompass everything from artmaking in the traditional sense to interdisciplinary exploration. Art campers spend time in the galleries and on the grounds exploring the art and architecture, followed by time in the museum studio where they work with two artists each session. The last day of camp ends with a reception and exhibition of the campers’ artwork to celebrate their creative accomplishments with family and friends. Campers make exciting discoveries concerning art, the world, and themselves through Art Camp at the Modern.

    The Mattress Factory

A Fort Worth Original Since 1896! Harry Keeton, Sr., began selling mattress supplies in Fort Worth, Texas, back in 1896. Little did he know that this was the beginning of what was later to become the fastest growing chain of factory direct sleep stores. His two sons, Harry and Frank took over the business and expanded into Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Arizona, and California; shipping furniture and mattress supplies all over the world. Four generations later, Peter Duncan, Jr., realized that there was a need for Factory Direct Marketing and began selling his products directly to the consumer at wholesale prices. This concept has spread like wildfire. Public acceptance has been overwhelming. This great demand has caused the Mattress Factory to become a leader in the industry. Our production exceeds 10000 pieces manufactured each year. Our buying power, along with the "no middleman" concept give maximum savings, which are passed along to the customer... you! When you purchase from the Original Mattress Factory you save 50% off the purchase price at a retail store.
