Our family has been coming here for nearly a decade, and it has become one of our favorite traditions. I still love watching my boys’ faces light up the moment they walk through the doors and spot the giant dinosaur towering over the entrance. Even after all these years, that excitement never seems to fade.

More recently, though, their attention has been completely captured by the museum’s incredible new LED dome experience at the Jane and John Justin Foundation Omni Theater. Honestly, I was just as mesmerized as they were. I enjoyed it so much that I planned a date night there with my husband. The next day, he spent at least half an hour talking about the experience with our extended family.

Why We Keep Coming Back

When we first became members, we started with the basic membership. At around ninety dollars, it only took three visits for it to pay for itself. A friend later told me that the Wonder Membership included reciprocal admission to places like the Perot Museum, along with entrance to the Fort Worth Stock Show.

We do not use the Stock Show benefit very often, but my kids love the sports exhibits and children’s museum at the Perot, and I appreciate that it is another great indoor option during the Texas heat. About two years ago, we upgraded to the Wonder level, and it has easily become one of the best family expenses we pay for all year.

The membership has given us access to museums across the country, including museums in Washington, D.C., the Thinkery in Austin, the DoSeum in San Antonio, and the Children’s Museum in Denver, just to name a few of the ones we have visited. I am a family travel writer so we are always exploring new places and getting to use reciprocal benefits. 

Our New Favorite

For a while, the playground was the highlight of every visit. Then it was the new Omni Theater. But now, at least according to my kids, the TCU Children’s Museum has officially taken the top spot.

The old children’s museum served our family well over the years, especially the little grocery shopping section that my boys spent countless hours playing in. But the newly renovated space feels fresh, interactive, and thoughtfully designed.

My kids especially love the farming section and market, while I appreciate details like the quiet room and nursing room. It is clear that the renovation was designed with both children and parents in mind.

Why I’ll Keep Renewing

The last time I renewed our membership, I accidentally selected the basic level instead of the Wonder Membership. I did not realize my mistake until we visited the Perot Museum and were told we no longer had reciprocal admission benefits. Purchasing tickets for the day would have cost our family eighty-eight dollars.

I immediately called the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and upgraded our membership back to the Wonder level for fifty dollars. Not only did we get into the Perot that day, but we regained access to all the reciprocal museum benefits for the rest of the year.

Moments like that are exactly why this membership continues to be worth it for our family. After nearly ten years of visits, the museum is still one of our favorite places to spend time together, make memories, and escape the Texas heat for a few hours.

CLUB COMA, composed of members from acclaimed Austin acts Ume, Boyfrndz, and Stiletto Feels, pairs immense talent with high-energy live shows, earning them an intense hometown following. This show will be their only North Texas date for the remainder of the year.

The powerful blend of live music and immersive visuals is what makes the Live From The Omni concert series such a unique experience. Each performance transforms the theater and immerses guests into the artist’s and music’s own universe, creating an unforgettable experience that is unique to Fort Worth.

Live From The Omni featuring CLUB COMA is on Friday, November 14th. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the show begins at 7:30 PM. Guests can mingle, grab a drink. and enjoy concessions before heading into the dome to experience live music like never before. After the show, meet the band and grab a drink at Hotel Dryce, the official Live From The Omni after-party host.

This exhibit features ten Indigenous, Mestiza, Mexican-American, and Afro-Mexican grandmothers who have cooked, preserved and passed Mexican food culture along. Each of the abuela’s stories will be told through documentary film, audio stories, photographs, kitchen artifacts and family recipes – allowing guests to get a deeper look at the impact of Mexican and Mexican-American women on the culinary traditions and unique culture of Southern California.

This exhibit focuses on the themes of identity, place, and cuisine by exploring the various dishes these grandmothers prepared in their kitchens, such as chiles en nogada, mole, tamales, and pozole to name a few. The dishes and artifacts in Abuelita’s Kitchen: Mexican Food Stories highlight the rich food heritage of Mexican immigrant communities and address some of the shared challenges faced by these grandmothers as immigrants and Mexican-Americans.

As visitors go through the exhibit, they will learn about each woman’s immigration journey, their deep connections to their home states in Mexico, and the diverse neighborhoods that became their home. The narratives of Mexican and Mexican-American women have been underrepresented in museum collections. By capturing the histories and family recipes of women who are immigrants, and non-English-speaking, we enrich our understanding and gain a deeper appreciation for the significant contributions these women have made to the food traditions of the United States.

To celebrate our own culinary heritage and vibrant community, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History has partnered with local establishments to feature additional stories of Fort Worth women who have made an impact in Fort Worth’s culinary culture. Abuelita’s Kitchen: Mexican Food Stories will include stories and personal artifacts from Fort Worth favorites like Los Vaqueros, Tokyo Cafe, Don Artemio, and Birrieria y Taqueria Cortez.

Throughout the duration of the exhibit, Museum guests and community members will have the opportunity to submit their own recipes, in person or online, to create a community cookbook which will be available to the public free of charge once the exhibit ends.

On February 9, 2025 Museum Members will receive early access to the exhibit for a private Member preview from 12 PM to 1 PM. Beginning at 1 PM, the exhibit will be open to the general public.

The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday, from 12 PM to 5 PM. “Black Cowboys: An American Story” is a powerful exhibition featuring artifacts, photographs, and documents depicting the work and skills of Black cowboys. The exhibit offers insight into legendary cowboys, a clearer picture of the Black West and a more diverse portrait of the American West.

Biographical profiles, photos, artifacts, multimedia and interactives reveal how Black cowboys were integral to the American economy, shaped the legacies of Black ranching families and turned ranch skills into popular performances in rodeos, music and film. Be transported through time to meet a variety of real Black cowboys and appreciate their deep impact on American History.

As car ownership exploded in the first half of the 20th century, Americans wanted to travel like never before. The call of the road was felt by motorists of all backgrounds, but Black Americans faced discrimination, racism, and segregation at various points in their travels. Through their desire to enjoy safe travel and community, Black populations created the “Negro Motorist Green Book,” an annual guide featuring restaurants, hotels, and many other businesses deemed safe for Black travelers and road trippers.

This family-friendly exhibition explores what the travel experience was like, as well as the remarkable guide that helped Black Americans adventure with confidence. Step into the times through an immersive photo experience, chart a safe path through Texas using the Green Book as a resource and examine artifacts from Fort Worth history and beyond. Guests can interact together with guided sets of questions to spark discussion with their family members or friends.

“As a historian, this honestly is a DREAM come true – to go from visiting museum exhibits as a younger child to curating museum exhibits as an older child is an absolute treat,” said Dr. Frederick Gooding, guest curator for the exhibition and Dr. Ronald E. Moore Professor in Humanities in the John V. Roach Honors College at Texas Christian University. “I sincerely hope visitors enjoy the exhibit as much as I enjoyed the exhibit creation process. If people walk away from the Green Book experience with at least one new insight, then we are at least one step closer to reaching our desired destination of a [more] understanding Fort Worth.”

In addition to the exhibit, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History’s Lecture Series will feature Dr. Gooding as a guest speaker. The Lecture Series is a chance for guests to hear from the most exciting thinkers, makers, and doers in the world of science and history. On February 21, 2022, join the museum for the second installment in the series, “Navigating the Road to Reconciliation.” Guests can purchase VIP tickets to meet the speaker at a special reception ahead of the lecture. Fort Worth and the Green Book is created through a grant from the North Texas Communities Foundation’s “Fund to Advance Racial Equity” and opens February 11, 2022. The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History will be open five days a week beginning on February 6, 2022. Regular museum hours will be Wednesday through Friday, 10 AM to 5 PM, and Sunday, Noon to 5 PM.
