On September 9, 1963, FWCD hosted its first day of classes with 210 students and 17 teachers on a 10-acre campus with three original buildings. Just one year later, in 1964, 80 additional acres of land were purchased, and FWCD opened the doors to its brand-new Annie Richardson Bass Lower School. Sixty years later, FWCD is the proud home of 1,097 students and 159 full-time faculty members across 13 buildings throughout its 104-acre wooded campus in southwest Fort Worth. Here’s to many more years educating Fort Worth’s young minds!

Vasquez tapped into a little-known and seldom-used partnership HSC has with the Tarrant Area Food Bank to take advantage of a streamlined system that speeds up the delivery process for those in need. She’s also spearheaded a food drive and hopes to send patients home with pre-prepared food packages after their appointments. Patients who need food resources in Tarrant County and are homebound or have limited transportation are now automatically approved for a delivery of shelf-stable products.

Participating campuses will be assigned one of the six birds approved by the Fort Worth Audubon for research. Over the course of this school year, students will conduct research and create presentations advocating for their assigned bird to become the city’s officially recognized bird. The most compelling presentations will be featured at the district’s annual science fair, scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 4, 2024, at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center. The community is invited to view these presentations and vote on their preferred bird.

But fret not, lovers of Concerts in the Garden! The FWSO remains committed to the Fort Worth community and will schedule alternative concerts in collaboration with local arts organizations so that live music can still be a part of the traditional summer fun for all families.

The post January/February 2024 Class of Fort Worthies first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

The GM Financial Parade of Lights returns to the streets of downtown Fort Worth for its 41st year on November 19. Year-after-year, North Texas families gather to experience the lights on 100+ professionally designed floats, energetic marching bands, sparkling antique cars, precision equestrian units, festive horse-drawn carriages, and carolers spreading Christmas cheer along the 1.59-mile parade route. The night will conclude with Santa and Mrs. Claus appearing on the specially designed, LED-lit, grand finale float.

One of my favorite things about Fort Worth has always been the juxtaposition of our Western heritage with our world-class museums and vibrant art scene. “Where the West Begins” has become “Where Artists Begin.” In this installment of Fort Worthies, we celebrate those who make art and make art possible in Cowtown. Cowboys and Culture, indeed!

William Campbell Gallery is pleased to announce new gallery artist Marshall Harris. Harris is perhaps best known for his larger-than-life, hyperrealist renderings of figures and objects, which include repurposed objects or ephemera, as well as using wood and other natural objects as his medium and subject matter. Harris received his BFA in Graphic Design from Texas Christian University in 1979, where he created TCU’s famous Flying T logo, used frequently in university athletics. “I’ve always admired the art legacy that Bill and Pam Campbell built in Fort Worth with their gallery. To join the brilliant artists here… really is an honor. I’m both humbled and exhilarated to bring my contemporary work to these patrons and collectors.”

The Lone Star Film Festival (LSFF) and the Fort Worth Film Commission (FWFC) are pleased to announce Texan singer/songwriter Charley Crockett will be the recipient of the 2023 Stephen Bruton Award at the LSFF Gala on November 10, 2023. Born in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Crockett was raised in Dallas. His music reflects his time busking in New Orleans’ French Quarter and playing in Dallas’s Deep Ellum. “Charley’s music reflects the unique and passionate sounds of Texas artists,” said Tom Martens, director of the Fort Worth Music Office. “His artistry in music and storytelling is compelling for everyone in creative industries, and we’re excited to honor his contributions to music and film in Fort Worth.”

Carolyn West founded the Thank You Darlin’ Foundation to not only to give children access to the arts but to strengthen Fort Worth-area children in reading, writing, and public speaking. To this end, the Foundation hosts the annual Voice2Youth Poetry Slam for area third through 12th graders. ““We look to make more of an impact,” said West. “When we see a kid say they hated poetry, but now they like it, or they read a book and realize they didn’t like reading before. We’ve heard everything from children saying they don’t express themselves like an exploding volcano anymore, they know how to choose their words.”

Native Fort Worthian Jacob Lovett always loved art. He took classes in high school and at the University of Mississippi, but it wasn’t until he had graduated that he realized that art wasn’t just a hobby. He also realized that while Fort Worth has become a center for up-and-coming artists, said artists need a place to make their art. So he created Muse. Based on the co-working model, muse. offers private studios, event space, and, of course, coffee to Fort Worth artists.

2023’s installment of Fall Gallery Night will be held on September 9. Twice a year, the Fort Worth Art Dealers Association (FWADA) organizes shows at galleries, museums, restaurants, bars, and event spaces across the city. It is a uniquely Fort Worth way to introduce both new and experienced art patrons to new artists and art. Most venues are open from 1 pm through the evening, so this is a wonderful chance to expose your family to new and exciting art!

A closeup of an artist with a brush painting a picture

Just when we thought The Welman Project couldn’t get any cooler! It turns out that the local nonprofit doesn’t just keep old office supplies out of landfills by giving them to teachers for use in classrooms. They keep trash out of landfills by urging schoolchildren to turn trash into art. Through the Fort Worth After School Recycled Art Contest, The Welman Project teaches students the importance of creative recycling while sparking their imaginations. “The goal [of the contest] is to really get them looking at materials in different ways,” said Taylor Willis, one of The Welman Project’s founders, “And seeing how in their own daily lives they can be reusing materials, finding beauty in things that other people might discard and find their artistic voice.” This year’s theme was Curious Creatures and Make Believe Monster; Kirkpatrick Elementary won first place this year, while West Handley Elementary won the People’s Choice Award for a monster named Queen Iris.

Gallery of Dreams was founded by Lauren Saba alongside Fort Works Art as a way to support local artists as they work to establish themselves. For the past eight years, Gallery of Dreams has also curated the Mayoral High School Art Competition. This juried competition is open to high school students living in a 20-mile radius from Fort Worth and offers cash prizes for first, second, and third place. In addition, the first place winner’s art work will hang in Mayor Mattie Parker’s office for a year. Saba said of the contest, “Every year, local students are selected to exhibit their work in a white wall gallery with a reception in their honor and cash prizes… The validation that the students get… leaves me with tears in my eyes. It is powerful.”

If you think you can’t make a living as an artist, think again. Native Fort Worthian Jack Rusell, aka Jackdaw of Jackdaw Folk Art, is proof you can. Jackdaw makes linoleum-cut art prints that have quickly become popular among art patrons. His subjects are either local history or pop culture, and the stark lines and simple colors of his prints are eye-catching. Don’t be surprised if you see his works on album covers, too. And if further proof of his talent is needed (it really isn’t), Jackdaw is the featured artist of this year’s ArtsGoggle. Congratulations, Jackdaw!

The post Tastemaker’s Fort Worthies first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

FWCD is the only school in Fort Worth and one of only five schools in Texas selected for partnership. The program involves providing free natural resources, conservation, agriculture, and stewardship education programs to FWCD students in the seventh through 12th grades to enhance comprehension of natural resources as part of their formal science curriculum. Students will engage in rigorous and relevant science lessons to learn about Texas’ natural resources, water cycles, responsible hunting, and land stewardship, and take part in activities such as wildlife scavenger hunts, topography hikes, water-quality testing, and more. At the end of the program, students will relay their knowledge of conservation during an “Expedition Day” taking place outdoors at a privately-owned ranch near Fort Worth.

The Project’s programs in Arlington will include pay-what-you-can meal service, culinary job training, and farm and garden activities. The Taste Project is designed to feed, educate, and serve Tarrant County’s food-insecure residents, who make up 13% of the county’s population. Since opening in 2017, more than 125,000 people have dined at the original location in Fort Worth, enjoying healthy, high-quality meals made from seasonal ingredients from the surrounding area. The menu has no prices. Guest simply either pay what they can afford, pay what they would typically pay for such a meal, or pay what they would typically pay, plus a little extra to help a neighbor in need.

With a mission to change the way commercial industrial spaces are built, McGlothlin has assembled a powerhouse leadership team for Empire Holdings, with 15-year development pro Bowie Holland serving as president, and Trenton Laird, founder of The Construction Group, serving as its construction partner. Together, the team has already led Empire Holdings to acquire and develop more than 100 properties across five states, with a primary focus on Texas. McGlothlin said, “Our mission is to change the way industrial spaces are built – with a user-focused design that takes our clients’ facility needs and turns them into a strategic business advantage.”

Once completed, the Panther Island district, just on the outskirts of Downtown, will include a a riverwalk, a park system, roundabouts, a fixed transit line, the Trinity River promenade, a houseboat district, pedestrian bridges and the Town Lake and Marina. While the project was founded on the premise of flood control, local leaders and stakeholders have since honed their attention on the economic development phase, which aligns with the city’s economic development strategic plan.

On March 24 and 25th, undergraduates from around the world will present their ideas for conscious capitalism ventures that make a profit while also solving a problem. Undergraduate innovators will pitch their business plans and act as investors in other teams in the Investor Challenge, choosing who they think will advance in the competition. Patterson said, “While it’s definitely an honor to win this award, I view this as a team award – 100%. An entrepreneur is only as good as the team in the background making the magic happen. I’m incredibly proud of our team of dedicated lawyers and legal professionals who work their tails off every day for our clients. This is the second nomination for the arena since its opening just four years ago. The Arena has quickly become an anchor for entertainment in the Fort Worth community while garnering national and international recognition as a first-class facility for concerts and sporting events. “Being nominated for Venue of the Year by Pollstar Magazine is an incredible honor especially still being a young venue,” said Matt Homan, president, and general manager of Trail Drive Management. “Dickies Arena brought top-notch entertainment to Fort Worth in 2022 and will continue in 2023 with amazing events and concerts with the fan experience always being our number one priority.”

Local inventor Marc Patterson has come up with a solution. River Refresh is a non-toxic, non-corrosive and organic, cleaner, deodorizer, sanitizer, and disinfectant. The only ingredient in River Refresh is something your white blood cells produce to help kill pathogens in your body called Hypochlorous Acid or HOCL. Used by veterinarians and pet owners, River Refresh kills germs more effectively and quickly than harsher chemicals and is patent pending.

The post Discovery & Entrepreneurship’s Fort Worthies first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.
