The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth presents Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers, the artist’s largest exhibition to date and his first major museum survey in more than a decade. Johnson, one of the most acclaimed artists of his generation, is known for his diverse practice, which spans painting, sculpture, film, and installation—all of which are included in this exhibition.

“We are excited to welcome visitors to Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers. This presentation, a rich collaboration between the artist and the exhibition curators, visually brings to life Johnson’s path to self-discovery from a young age and his deep personal and cultural reflections over the last thirty years. We are honored to partner with the Guggenheim New York in presenting this extraordinary exhibition.”

Halona Norton-Westbrook, Ph.D., Director, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

For nearly three decades, Rashid Johnson has cultivated a multidisciplinary approach to artmaking while drawing upon art history, philosophy, literature, and music as conceptual frameworks. Over this time, Johnson has developed a distinct visual language that engages with central themes and questions that reflect on his story and contemporary life in general, such as race, masculinity, empathy for others, self-care, family, sobriety, and his own, and each of our inner emotional lives.

The exhibition’s title, A Poem for Deep Thinkers, takes its name from a poem by Amiri Baraka, an American poet, writer, teacher, and political activist whose work is a frequent source of inspiration for Johnson. Tracing Johnson’s trajectory from his early experiments in photography and video to his recent materially complex paintings and assemblages, this presentation brings together nearly ninety works spanning pivotal phases of the artist’s career. A site-specific installation, an outdoor sculpture, and two works activated through live performance are highlights within the exhibition.

A Poem for Deep Thinkers is cocurated by Naomi Beckwith, Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, New York, and Andrea Karnes, Chief Curator of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, with additional support from Faith Hunter, Curatorial Assistant, Guggenheim New York.

“Rashid Johnson is a singular creative force whose work bridges art history with Black contemporary culture and culture at large, creating powerful spaces for reflection and dialogue. It has been a profound honor to work closely with Rashid, Naomi Beckwith, and the Guggenheim to bring this important exhibition to our community in Fort Worth.”

The ongoing public events include special tours and drawing programs, our spring break events and summer camps, and partnerships for middle and high school students through Fort Worth ISD and local youth-serving agencies.

Organized by the National Portrait Gallery, London, this exhibition brings together nearly 50 works made throughout the artist’s career. The exhibition is broadly chronological in scope and traces the development of Saville’s practice from the 1990s to today. The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is proud to be the only U.S. venue for this important exhibition.

“We are honored that the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth will be the exclusive U.S. venue for Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting, giving our community and visitors to Fort Worth a remarkable opportunity to experience and learn from the breadth of this celebrated artist’s work. We enthusiastically invite everyone to join us for this stunning exhibition and engaging programs that draw connections in dialogue with the Modern’s Collection.”

Halona Norton-Westbrook, Ph.D.
Director of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

Highlighting key artworks, from monumental oil paintings to smaller-scale charcoal drawings, the exhibited works reveal the inventiveness of Saville’s practice. Curated by Sarah Howgate, Senior Curator of Contemporary Collections at the National Portrait Gallery, London, with consultation by Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth Chief Curator Andrea Karnes, this survey was created in close collaboration with the artist to explore her deep passion for the painting process, including drawing as a cornerstone.

Rising to prominence in the 1990s, Saville has played a leading role in reinvigorating figurative painting. Her works reveal a deep awareness of art history and the ways in which the body has been represented over time and across cultures. While inspired by great artists, like Michelangelo and Rembrandt, and influenced by modern masters like Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud, Saville is also intrigued by the work of abstract artists, including Willem de Kooning and Cy Twombly.

Saville’s early figurative representations were captivating in their depictions of heads and bodies. The exhibition reunites some of the paintings the artist created while still at the Glasgow School of Art, including ground-breaking works that launched her into the spotlight. The bold and intense aesthetic of these early paintings prefigures Saville’s later work and her ongoing interest in flesh and anatomy.

In addition to Saville’s painted forms, Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting includes a number of drawings that are intimate and almost sculptural in appearance. Using charcoal, pastel, and pencil, the medium of drawing has remained important to Saville’s practice, providing an important outlet for experimentation.

Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting concludes with the artist’s most recent series of new “portraits,“ which illustrate the evolution in her presentations of flesh. While her distinct style is maintained, these works fall between the figurative and the abstract. Rendered in saturated tones, for Saville, these paintings make connections between the physical and virtual in our contemporary age.

“It has been a profound honor to work closely with Jenny Saville, Sarah Howgate, and the National Portrait Gallery, London. Saville’s paintings are rich with emotion and physicality—raw and poetic in equal measure. They push the boundaries of figurative painting and offer a powerful meditation on the human condition. We are privileged to present this exhibition in Fort Worth, with the addition of eleven major U.S. loans.”

Andrea Karnes
Chief Curator, Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

“Jenny Saville is one of the most important artists working today. This exhibition charts an exciting journey, from the early monumental paintings I remember well from her Young British Artists III exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in 1994, to her recent ‘portraits’ for the 21st century. Walking a tightrope between figuration and abstraction, the exhibition celebrates and delights in the nature of paint itself. It has been a privilege to work closely with Jenny Saville on The Anatomy of Painting.”

Jenny Saville was born in 1970 in Cambridge, England. She received her B.A. Honors Fine Art from Glasgow School of Art, Scotland before being represented by Gagosian in 1997.

Saville is known for her depictions of the human form, which transcend the boundaries of both classical figuration and modern abstraction. Saville has been credited with originating a new and challenging method of depicting the figure in her work by imbuing her monumental paintings with a sculptural yet elusive dimensionality that verges on the abstract.

Saville’s works are featured in several public collections, including the Tate, London; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Broad, Los Angeles; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Morgan Library & Museum, New York; Seattle Art Museum, Seattle; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and The Long Museum, Shanghai. In 2007, Saville was elected a Royal Academician, Royal Academy of Arts, London.

The exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive publication of the same name, which includes texts from Emanuele Coccia, Dr Nicholas Cullinan, John Elderfield, Roxane Gay, and Andrea Karnes, as well as a conversation between Saville and the exhibition’s curator, Sarah Howgate. The catalogue is available at the Modern Shop and online at www.shop.themodern.org.

Ritesh Batra, 2013
April 3

A lonely housewife (Nimrat Kaur) decides to try adding some spice to her stale marriage by preparing a special lunch for her neglectful husband (Nakul Vaid). Unfortunately, the delivery goes astray and winds up in the hands of an irritable widower (Irrfan Khan). Curious about her husband’s lack of response, she adds a note to the next day’s lunch box and thus begins an unusual friendship in which two lonely strangers can talk about their joys and sorrows without ever meeting in person.

PG; 104 minutes; Hindi with English subtitles

La Belle et la Bête
Jean Cocteau, 1946
April 10

With its magical optical effects and enchanting performances by Josette Day and Jean Marais, Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast remains the most surreal—and soulful—of fairy tale film adaptations.

93 minutes; French with English subtitles

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Richard Brooks, 1958
April 24

108 minutes

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
Joseph Mankiewicz, 1947
May 1

Defying her conventional in-laws, a young widow (Gene Tierney) leaves London with her daughter and moves away for a quieter life in a secluded seaside cottage. She discovers the ghost of the dead former owner, a sea captain (Rex Harrison), is haunting the house, but gathers the courage to stand up to him, and the woman and ghost become friends. Faced with dwindling means of support, Lucy agrees to the captain’s challenge to write his colorful life story.

104 minutes

Buena Vista Social Club
Wim Wenders, 1999
May 15

An ensemble of aging musicians whose talents were virtually forgotten following Fidel Castro’s takeover of Cuba are brought out of retirement by Ry Cooder, who travelled to Havana in order to bring them together. This acclaimed documentary features triumphant performances of extraordinary music and resurrected the musicians’ careers.

G; 105 minutes

Some Like It Hot
Billy Wilder, 1959
May 29

After witnessing a Mafia murder, slick saxophone player Joe (Tony Curtis) and his long-suffering buddy, Jerry (Jack Lemmon), improvise a quick plan to escape from Chicago with their lives. Disguising themselves as women, they join an all-female jazz band and hop a train bound for sunny Florida. While Joe pretends to be a millionaire to win over the band’s sexy singer, Sugar (Marilyn Monroe), Jerry finds himself pursued by a real millionaire (Joe E. Brown) as things heat up and the mobsters close in.

In addition to the local celebrity guest interviews, the production will offer their studio audience and online viewers a few additional gifts during the holiday episode. The first exciting entertainment element featured in the Eleganza is an appearance by country artist and 2019 Ameripolitan Outlaw Female of the Year, Summer Dean. Dean will perform during a special musical video segment in partnership with Niles City Sound and treat guests to a live performance alongside Tony Green. The second treat for viewers is the introduction of a new special culinary focused segment featuring Cafe Modern favorite and local chef Alan Wong.

Opening on November 8 and running through January 12, the Modern will FOCUS on photographer Martine Gutierrez.
Martine Gutierrez’s photographs and videos explore gender, race, class, and sexuality, as well as conventional ideals of beauty and identity as a social construct. Her most ambitious project to date, Indigenous Woman, is a glossy, 146-page publication that closely mirrors Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine in form and production. Here, Gutierrez assumes the role of editor, writer, model, designer, ad executive, and photographer, with fictional advertising and high-fashion spreads where the artist continually reinvents herself throughout its pages. One section of the publication features her Demons series, in which Gutierrez assumes the role of Aztec deities – such as the goddess of beauty, Xochiquetzal-that were later referred to as “demons” after the Spanish conquest. As the artist states, “Indigenous Woman marries the traditional to the contemporary, the native to the post-colonial, and the marginalized to the mainstream in the pursuit of genuine selfhood, revealing cultural inequities along the way. This is a quest for identity. Of my own specifically, yes, but by digging my pretty, painted nails deeply into the dirt of my own image I am also probing the depths for some understanding of identity as a social construction.” For her FOCUS exhibition, the artist will present photographs from the Indigenous Woman series.

Martine Gutierrez was born in 1989 in Berkeley, California, and currently lives in Brooklyn. She earned a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. Her work has been the focus of solo exhibitions at Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, South Hadley, Massachusetts; Ryan Lee, New York; Boston University Art Galleries; Contemporary Art Museum, Raleigh; and the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, among others. She has also been included in many group exhibitions across the globe, including the 58th Venice Biennale, and at institutions such as the Hayward Gallery, London; Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford; Kunstmuseum Bonn; and the New Museum, New York. Gutierrez’s work is in public collections such as The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; and the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts.

At the conclusion of the FOCUS season in the spring, one work or group of works from each exhibition is held for the annual Purchase Meeting. During this event, members of the Director’s Council vote to determine which work will be recommended for acquisition by the Modern, thus contributing to the Museum’s permanent collection and shaping its cultural footprint.

The post FOCUS on Martine Gutierrez at the Modern first appeared on Tanglewood Moms.

To experience David Park: A Retrospective at The Modern is to witness a life that was soaked with a powerful amount of artistic energy and tragically cut short. Janet Bishop, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art’s Chief Curator arranged a collection of work depicting the arc of a career, which reached its apogee with the fresh emergence of figurative art from out of the mid-century cult of Abstract Expressionism.

Head of Lydia, ca. 1956. Oil on canvas, Framed: 18 x 24 in. Hackett Mill, San Francisco, courtesy of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth

The first Park retrospective in more than thirty years showcases phases of a young artist exploring his talents through watercolor, social realism, and silkscreens, as well as a Picasso-inspired period, all of which feature his mesmerizing use of the picture plane as well as a magnificent array of colors. Alongside artists including Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Bischoff, Park’s abrupt mid-century transition has been marked anecdotally by the account of his taking as many of his abstract paintings as he could fit in his car out to the dump, because, as he would later remark, abstraction was “insufficiently troublesome”.

The artist was also known to have said, “The East Coast was never my medium.” As a young man, Park migrated from Boston to the West Coast, where he would eventually teach at the San Francisco Art Institute and influence flocks of artists with his devotion to his work. Departing from the program’s abstract figurehead, Clyfford Still, his Bay Area Figurative Movement was a shot in the arm to the art world.

Much of this legacy can be seen in the relationships he fostered with his friends and students and the level to which he engaged them artistically as a mentor. A classically trained pianist – further heightening his creative engagement – Park also played piano in a jazz group of fellow artists. Two of the most striking pieces in the show visually refer to this musicality, one depicting his view of the group from behind the keys, and the other, his final completed canvas, a beautifully rendered cellist, whose form dynamically pushes beyond the frame.

Two Bathers, 1958.
With bold perspectives and a stunning sense of figure construction, Park’s work – starting in 1950 and running through the decade until his death from cancer in 1960 – represents a powerful sense of stillness. Fields of color dress the canvases in a serene ambiguity until eventually, in later works, they are completely unbound by the natural order. His long brush motions are so impressive that, as Bishop describes, “It is almost hard to believe the strokes will resolve themselves.” Gestural movements are complemented by the most succinct flicks of the wrist to suggest faces and emotions. The magnificent “Standing Male Nude in the Shower” from 1955 possesses many of these qualities and beckons from across the gallery with its vibrant brick red body.

As his health failed and his strength diminished, he continued to find new artistic horizons, whether by using felt markers on a thirty-foot long strip of shelf’s paper or the small gouache paintings that display the expressive minimalism of Park’s work in his economical use of strokes and lines. Despite great pain and difficulty, it is clear that the artist simply wanted to continue painting as long as he could – a testament to the passion an artist can have for their craft. David Park: A Retrospective at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth runs through September 22nd, 2019.

The Modern Art Museum is bringing back the increasingly popular ModernKids Summer Flicks on August 7th and 8th. Your children can enjoy some of the best animated shorts from the Children’s Film Festival Seattle 2018 and it is totally free. Click the link to view times, titles and descriptions. Plus, if you haven’t been to the Takashi Murakami exhibit yet, this will be the perfect opportunity to enjoy it all!

One of my favorite go to spots for air-conditioned fun for kids is the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Their Famapalooza series continues on August 11 from 6-8pm. Pawesome Animals is the theme and is a chance to meet live animals, explore preserved animal specimens from around the world and learn about dinosaurs from Texas. There will be crafts and hands-on activities too!

If you haven’t been to the Crayola Experience yet and don’t mind a 45 minute drive to Plano, this is a fantastic option to entertain the kids and beat the heat at the same time. Plan on being there for at least 3-4 hours as there is plenty to do for both boys and girls to enjoy!

If your kids love live music like mine, head to Sundance Square August 11th and enjoy the evening as Professor D performs live. I always love a reason to be downtown and this is a great one!

Marvel Super Hero fans of all ages don’t want to miss Captain America, Iron Man, Spiderman and all of the favorites doing amazing stunts on August 16th. Marvel Universe LIVE! Age of Heroes is a show that will be performing at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Your little superheroes will be in awe!

August 18 and 19, the International All Breed Dog Show will be in town at the Will Rogers Memorial Center. Bring the whole family to see, watch and learn about all the different types of dogs around the world in a pleasantly cool, air-conditioned space.

If you are looking for a spot to cool down outside, Burger’s Lake is an all natural spring fed, one acre swimming hole. The water, fountains, swings and slides make a fun day for everyone.

Finally, for my last recommendation I saved the one and only hot, outside, no air conditioning event and I included it because it is really the coolest! Every third Sunday of the month, you can bike to brunch! August 19th at 8:30 am depart from Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop and bike to a well-earned brunch at Righteous Foods and then bike back. Total mileage is approximately 15 miles. There is no requirement to make it all the way there the first try. See how far you can go and each time get closer to the prize. You can do it!

FYI… Tax-free weekend is Friday August 10-12. Don’t let this month go by without doing something amazing. Tag us in your photos @tanglewoodmoms! Have fun and stay safe everybody!

March is almost here, and it is busy this year with Spring Break and Easter. I can help by giving you a heads up on all the wonderful activities available to you and your children.

I’m going to start with Monkey and Dog Books because I’m proud of my fellow Fort Worthians Michelle Marlow and Lisa Lewis, MD. They are both authors of books you might be interested in. Michelle Marlow has written a children’s book called S is the Most Delicious Sound. It is a children’s book to help children with speech disorders. Lisa Lewis is a local pediatrician who has written a book called Feed the Baby Hummus: Pediatrician-Backed Secrets from Cultures around the World. They will both be holding book signings at Monkey and Dog Books! Michelle will be there Saturday March 3rd beginning at 11am and you can find Lisa, March 2nd from 6-7pm. This is a great opportunity to meet the local authors, discover their books, and get some answers to questions you may have in these areas.

The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra presents Disney Fantasia: Live in Concert March 9-11 at Bass Hall.

March 9th the Fort Worth Botanic Garden brings you Bats in the Garden at 6:30pm. During the 60-minute bat encounter you will discover the benefits of bats in your backyard, learn the history of bats and learn about bat conservation.

March 11th at the Log Cabin Village you can see demonstrations of polymer clay sculpting. No reservation is required, just stop by to meet the artist and bring lots of questions.

For those of you staying in town for Spring Break, be sure to checkout my previous Tanglewood Moms blogs for Spring Break staycation ideas. They can be found here and here. I also have a few suggestions to add this year. First, The Kimbell Art Museum is having a Spring Break Art Extravaganza. This includes ongoing art activities, interactive family tours, storybook readings, teen studios led by guest artists and children’s films. There is no charge and no registration required to attend. March 13, 14, 15th anytime between 10am-3pm and on the 16th from 12pm-4pm. Additionally, The Modern Art Museum will hold Spring Break Wonders March 12-15th. Each session is lead by an artist and a docent. They will led a tour and guide work on a project focused on selected works in the Modern’s collection and the current special exhibition, New Works by Ron Mueck. This program is free as well.

There’s something for everyone in Fort Worth’s Cultural District. The outdoor spaces, especially between the Kimbell’s Renzo Piano Pavilion and Louis Kahn Building, are exquisite, meditative spaces that every local should know about. Within walking distance of these cultural gems are several fine dining spots: Blue Sushi Sake Grill, Hanabi Ramen & Izakaya, and Cafe Modern. Keeping up with the newest exhibits can be a task, so here’s an overview.

Arguably one of the hottest contemporary art shows in the United States just opened at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. KAWS: Where the End Starts, the first retrospective by Brooklyn-based artists Brian Donnelly (a.k.a. KAWS), runs through January 22. The exhibit has a high entertainment factor. Massive cartoonish statues embracing, references to popular cartoon characters of yesteryear, and artistically vandalized fashion posters from the mid-’90s are just a few of the colorful pieces on display. While it’s easy to get caught up in the macabre images of a deceased, dancing Snoopy or decapitated Homer Simpson, the artist himself said at a recent event that he’s not concerned with each cartoon’s history but rather with the shapes and colors cartoonists employ. The Calvin Klein and Gap posters in the rear of the museum are originals that Donnelly pulled, painted, and re-posted in Brooklyn nearly 20 years ago.

Nearby Kimbell Art Museum has a blockbuster of its own, albeit in a decidedly more Impressionistic vain. Monet: The Early Years, through January 29, is the first-ever exhibit devoted to the early years (1858 until 1872) of Claude Monet. The exhibit follows his development from a more traditional artist into the Impressionist force that he became.

The Amon Carter Museum of American Art pulls from photographer Richard Misrach and composer Guillermo Galindo to present Border Cantos through December 31. Translated to “Border Songs,” the title is an apt description of the Texas/Mexican border landscape that fills many of Misrach’s images and Galindo’s soundscapes. Galindo has built a reputation parsing together instruments from commonly-found items. For Border Cantos, many of the instrumental works played throughout the exhibit were recorded on discarded items found just north of the border. What struck me most about this exhibit was the neutral political stance the images and sounds created. Questions are posed but left unanswered.

Anyone who’s seen a Kids Who Care show is familiar with the Fort Worth Community Arts Center. Besides being home to W.E. Scott Theater, the center hosts dozens of (mostly free) art shows a year that feature local, regional, and national artists. Through December 22, visitors can see works by North Texas-native Lael Burns, whose works “contrasts imagery from nature with various man-made aspects of our contemporary world to express her interest with the tensions between spiritual and material aspects of life.”

Fort Worth is fortunate to have an astounding array of world-class culture all in concentrated a walkable area. It may take several trips, but make time for the other Cultural District destinations like the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame, Will Rogers Memorial Center, and Casa Mañana.
